Yeah, Highway Star and Child In Time are certainly more impressive, with others being arguably better. My personal favourites are Child in Time, Highway Star, Speed King, Stormbringer, Flight Of The Rat, and Smoke On The Water - in that order. It just goes to show how great DP is - that we can argue that they have better songs than SOTW.

Yes, you are so right, that song is not even close, but great. For one thing most songs on Deep Purple in Rock are better than Smoke on the Water, but the live version from Made in Japan is remarkable. Have loved that band all my life and seen MK II four times and even Rainbow, no other bands are even close.

Underrated band. And not only thanks to it's popularity, but also to association. Yea, Smoke on The Water is a nice song, but it's not their best one. Child in time, Highway Star, Burn, Fireball, Stormbringer, all are great songs (and the last three are not that popular, sadly). Everyone praises Black Sabbath (And don't get me wrong, they are a legendary band) as the Fathers of Heavy Metal, but they tend to forget about this "little" band that defined the history of Metal. Deep Purple pioneered Heavy Metal and, surprisingly, speed metal. Ritchie Blackmore founded Rainbow, which again, was a legendary band. But no, if mainstream people hear about Dio, they think about Holy Diver or something, but not about masterpieces like Stargazer, (Rising, 1976) from Rainbow. Deep Purple defined Metal. Ritchie Blackmore is a living legend, the way he plays guitar is just unimaginable. He can be fast (Highway Star), dramatic (Child in Time), epic (Stargazer), and the list goes on. So, the next time you praise Sabbath and Zeppelin, remeber the not so popular Heavy Metal legends, Deep Purple. (And don't forget about Rainbow, too.)

I've been a truck driver for decades, once i had to drive a 53' box from Míchigan to south Texas non stop. The warehouse clerk gave me a tape and told me "this is my favorite tape it only has one song recorded many times put this on your stereo with all the volume up you will be going as fast as posible and no patroll will stop you" thats when i knew highway star was a song to stay with me my whole life.

Smoke On The Water is one of the few rock songs that's reasons for popularity are the same reasons as to why pop music is popular It has a catchy riff that is repeated for most of the song, meaning people tend to only remember the song for that one asset. Child In Time is Deep Purple's best song Smoke On The Water doesn't come close to the top 5

Why are so many people shocked that Smoke on the Water is number one? Child in Time is my personal favourite but Smoke on the Water definitely deserves to be number one, EVERYONE knows it, that distinctive riff will go down as one of if not the most iconic riff in rock history.. even today it is one of the first riffs a guitar teacher will teach a student to play on rhythm guitar.
