Fun fact, Skullclamp was actually “nerfed” from +1/+1 to +1/-1 right at the end of development. Yeah, not surprised I saw Skullclamp that high. Paying 1 to draw 2 cards by sacrificing a small token is good, but the fact it sticks around makes it absurd when you have any kind of token generator. The fact that it's completely generic as well makes it a must-have in any Commander deck if you're even thinking of using tokens.

Sword of the Meek was actually banned in modern for nearly a decade, but even coming off, it wasn't until Urza where it took off. Shadowspear is on point, but should be higher, as it impacts even the eternal formats. For Nettlecyst, it's worth noting that the single type artifact lands are banned from modern, IE, anything that entered untapped. Colossus Hammer is on point. Sword of Fire and Ice is on point, but a lot of it's strength comes from the protection to red. Lightning Bolt is a super powerful removal tool in most formats, and having pro red is that impactful vs it. Shuko's review is on point. Batterskull is on point, but for both what it's done over the years and it's relevance to this day, it's a card that easily deserves a top 3 slot. Khadra is on point. We expect it to go the way of Jitte. Jitte's review is solid, but the +2/+2 mode is the weakest, the life gain comes up a lot. Note the Jitte creature doesn't have to survive combat. I'd actually nudge Jitte to just below Batterskull, but not any lower. Still a VERY strong equipment. Skullclamp is on point for why it's so strong, but it was actually tested. It had an equip cost of 3, and last minute they decided to buff it to a 1 cost equip, and hadn't bothered to test that.

Jitte at #2 is 100% correct and I don’t think it’s close. It’s almost impossible to win as a creature deck once counters get on Jitte. A quick side-note for Skullclamp: The buffing of the card was kind of on-point, but the story is a little more specific: It was originally +1/+0, but designers thought it was too powerful as is and it was changed to +1/-1, specifically intending to NERF it. I think you misspoke a bit about Skullclamp. You said that sacrificing a creature to draw two cards is "a rate that nothing really compares to" - but you're paying two mana to get those cards on the turn you play Skullclamp, and paying 1 when you use it again, which brings it in line with plenty of spells that draw two cards. 1 mana + sacrifice to draw two cards, or 2 mana + sacrifice to draw two cards with some other benefit, is pretty much standard in MTG. They've printed at least 3 black spells that do that in the last year and a half. The real distinction is that Skullclamp makes card draw at that cost accessible to every color, but even more importantly, that it's repeatable.
@joanaguayoplanell49122 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's kind of putting Card of Safe Return in a list of broken cards and describing it as if it was Supply Squad
@blahblah-fw5vb2 жыл бұрын
I feel like you have a misunderstanding about the term rate. It means the frequency in which something is happening. Other cards draw 2 for 3 skullclamp will become a staggeringly efficient machine in the ensuing turns becoming a draw two for two or even draw two for 1. This is an unreal speed and frequency of card draw. It’s not a draw two for 3 that’s repeatable like you disingenuously distilled it to. So no to use the term rate is correct here.

Shadowspear's activated ability is actually almost entirely irrelevant. The point of Shadowspear is that with low opportunity cost of a single copy which you can search up when you need it with Saga, lifelink and trample is the perfect combination of abilities to put on a big construct. Both hexproof and indestructible are rare keywords in Modern and Legacy and while sure, it might come up once every 50 games, you'd barely notice if that activated ability wasn't there. You'd still play it for the keywords because they completely slam the door on fair decks which might have otherwise been able to race or chump block the constructs long enough to survive.

one thing that makes equip cards way better in MTG than YuGiOh is that MTG equips remain on the field after the creature they're attached to is destroyed. Of course, that does mean they are balanced by an equip cost, but I think that's fair.

If I was to put a sword from the sword of cycle it would be Sword of Feast and Famine. Untapping all your lands is massive. Giving protection from green and black is also imo much better than blue and red. Black has the best removal in the game and green has the biggest blockers and attackers. Being able to slice through that defense kills green decks. Only downside really is that green likes blowing up all your artifacts and enchantments so I could see that as the argument for bluered as the pro colors. But I think really untapping your lands and essentially having a second turn in your turn can be too back breaking on a board, or even ensuring you have all your mana open to protect yourself off turn is incredible too.

6:57 the card gives +2/+2 but not trample. Unlike yugioh, creatures in magic don’t deal piercing damage unless they have the keyword ability Trample. So even though your creature probably deals more than 2 damage, a creature just 1 toughness can block all of that damage. The damage trigger only happens when it hits a player, so any block will probably prevent it, but it does come with some powerful evasion with pro-red/blue stopping any red or blue creatures from blocking at all.
@joanaguayoplanell49122 жыл бұрын

@anthonycannet13052 жыл бұрын
I would argue that Sword of Kaldra is a better equipment than Kaldra Compleat. It costs 4 mana to cast and 4 to equip, gives +5/+5 and whenever the equipped creature deals damage to another creature, exile that creature. The important distinction is that Sword of Kaldra triggers on any damage while Kaldra Compleat only triggers on combat damage. There are ways to get infinite “ping” damage, where a creature has an activated ability to deal at least 1 damage to any target( or just creatures), which allows you to exile every creature on the board by simply activating the ability to deal 1 damage to a creature. So you can remove the opponent’s creatures before blocking (meaning the opponent can’t even choose to just take the damage and spare the creature) and probably swing a +5 creature directly at a player with (now)no blockers.
@nicolaistuhlmuller87182 жыл бұрын
It's waaaaaaay too expensive for that. Kaldra Compleat can be searched and cast on your second or third turn using stoneforge mystic, becomes a 5/5 creature thanks to living weapon and can attack right away thanks to haste, sword of kaldra still needs to pay 4 mana to equip and you still need your ping out on top, so even if you brought it out with stoneforge mystic, you'd still have to gather enough mana to pay the equip cost AND you need your target out too, which costs mana. If it's a "tap for damage" card, you need to wait even longer. By the time you can start exiling cards with sword of kaldra, kaldra compleat on its own has most likely just attacked 4 times already for up to 20 damage.

Best MTG equipment I remember is "Worldslayer" which is a 5 mana artifact with an equip cost of 5 which has the effect of "Whenever the equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, destroy all permaments other than Worldslayer." which was incredibly powerful if you could get it onto an indestructible creature and then manage to get a point of damage in, your opponent won't be able to recover from it. Something like the Darksteel Forge could also just turn all your artifacts (and artifact creatures) indestructible. And getting in just one point of damage isn't that hard if you can aid it with a spell or have a high attack creature with trample... such as the Darksteel Colossus, which is a 11/11 with trample and is indestructible by default. Fun times.
@anthonycannet13052 жыл бұрын
The reasons that isn’t on this list are: A) it effectively costs 10 mana to use, B) requires the creature to hit the player, C) doesn’t give evasion to support it’s own trigger like the sword cycle does, and D) requires other fairly expensive pieces to prevent it from ruining your own field as well. So it’s too expensive, hard-ish to trigger, and self-destructive. Yes things like indestructible creatures or dark steel forge can prevent that but those cost a lot of mana. You can also use the cost reductions from artifact and equipment synergies to bring down that 10 mana price, but without protections for them they get removed almost right away by the artifact’s own ability meaning you can’t make any more use of them if your board gets disrupted. Then there’s the various forms of evasion you can give to creatures but for a creature to have indestructible AND evasion it usually means a higher mana cost, or using other auras or equipments to grant those abilities means they can be stripped from your creature if you don’t also have the self destruction protection… in total there are too many necessary pieces that generally come with a high mana cost for that to be a top tier strategy (not only are they cards you need to play, they’re taking up slots in your deck that other better utility cards could’ve fit in)
@Dionysus247792 жыл бұрын

I'm surprised Deathrender isn't on the list, it'd be low on the list, but it's definitely a great Equipment to cheat out big beefy creatures. Loved using in WB to cheat out something like Avacyn or Griselbrand. Oh, and Grafted Wargear... a persistent sac engine that equips for 0, definitely deserves a mention even if it's just to mention how it synergizes with Skullclamp. Surprised that neither Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots didn't make it either. Wouldn't expect them to make the Top 5, but they're always solid in aggro decks. Sword of Feast & Famine is the best sword equip, not Fire & Ice. F&F literally untaps all your land when the equipped creature hits, that's WAY better than just dealing 2 extra damage and drawing a card. I get that it's subjective and based on the precise circumstances, but if we're just generalizing things, untapping your lands alone is better than both of Fire & Ice's damage effects.

If the list was going purely by the power level of the cards Shuko probably wouldn't even get an honorable mention, but it is a more than interesting enough combo to warrant its inclusion; even though its not the only card that can do it (grafted wargear, lightning greaves, umbral mantle, and leather armor can all do the same thing), it is the most iconic one that can. Shadow Spear should also be higher up, that thing is not going to stop being crazy. It's newer than Colossus Hammer and has SIGNIFICANTLY more top 8s; and sees play in most formats, where as the hammer is basically modern exclusive. Would have loved to have seen Embercleave on the list. Sadly it just isn't good enough after rotating. sword of feast and famine is way better then fire and ice, better colors to have protection from and untapping all your lands on contact with the opponent is just so good... and it does something else too, but I honestly don't remember what because it's not anywhere near as good as the untap.

right. it was discard a card, which is decent.

Sword of Feast and famine is so powerful its played in almost every deck fire and ice isn't that good untapping all your lands and taking cards out of your opponents hands is broken
@Atmapalazzo2 жыл бұрын
Honestly it's a toss up, but the history of fire and ice is longer than feast and famine, so it probably earned the spot.
@dedgamingchannel37482 жыл бұрын
@@Atmapalazzo I'd agree if it wasn't for the fact that Feast and famine can virtually double your mana and gives pro black green which is a killer protection choice

FaF was the straw that broke the camels back and forced the ban on Mind Sculptor and Stoneforge in Standard. Being able to untap and hold counter magic far outways 2 dmg and a card, not to mention you get one of your opponents cards in the proccess. Not even debatable imo.

Could someone please explain the lack of Godsend on the list? Is it because it is White? It is one of the best equipments in the game no doubt, and completely shuts down several decks

The card see's no real play in any competitive eternal format, and even when it was in standard, it wasn't really ran. Dont mistake me: its a cool card. But its a 6 mana investment the turn it comes down, that is only a possible +1 in card advantage. (thats assuming the opponent blocks) Compare that to all the "Sword of ___and ___" that exist. all of them are only a 5 mana investment turn they come down, offer some form of evasion, and force the opponent to choose between blocking, which means a -1, or letting it through, which usually is at least a +1 in advantage. Hopefully this context helps a bit. and I am willing to be proven wrong if you can show me a list for modern, legacy, or vintage. I love hearing about stratagies i have not seen before.

Cranial plating is better than cyst. Both are played but plating will forever be a 4x im aggro decks.

Cyst comes with a body. That's very hard to beat over an Equip that needs to attach to something.

@fwg19942 жыл бұрын
Note that most Affinity tends to include 4 Cranial Plating in the deck, while only 2 or fewer Nettlecysts. The extra mana does actually matter a lot here, and the instant speed equip part of Cranial Plating can make a big difference here. Modern has some extremely efficient instant speed removal at the moment, so being able to move the Cranial Plating in response to removal can mean the difference between hitting for lethal or not and dying on the next turn. Also for Shadowspear, the combination of trample and lifelink is a big part of what makes it so good, as both address issues the kind of decks interested in Shadowspear face. Trample means their big creatures can swing through for damage and actually close out games, while lifelink means they can come back from a slow start. The combination of the two and an extra +1/+1 means that just having almost any creature on the board with a Shadowspear becomes pretty hard to race. A 3/3 creature becomes a 4/4, meaning an 8 point life swing opponents need to beat each turn, and since it has trample, they can't just stall with smaller creatures. As for Sword of Fire and Ice and Batterskull, I think the cards are a little past their prime. While the sword does give two of the most relevant colors for protection, it doesn't give them until after its equipped, and spending 2 mana to equip it, only to have that creature get removed is a disaster, as it likely means you spent an entire turn doing nothing. Then, even if you get it equipped, you need to be doing combat damage to a player to really start generating value from it, which may not even happen. The card just takes too much time before you start getting value out of it to be consistently powerful. Batterskull is much the same in that its just a little slow and easy to interact with. While its not quite as bad as the swords are in that regard, it does just have something that fills its niche better in most cases. Other cards that weren't mentioned that definitely deserve consideration are Lion Sash and Embercleave. Lion Sash hasn't really found a home yet as far as I know. Being white, and costing white to activate really limits it when white has traditionally been one of the weakest colors, and often only makes it in as a splash color for competitive decks. The combination of graveyard hate that gets big or can make other creatures big is powerful and mucks a fair number of decks. So I could definitely see it finding a home, especially as they continue to push white more. Embercleave has been a real powerhouse in creature based aggro decks for its ability to just end games out of nowhere. It doesn't really synergize with the current meta for modern, but I don't think much would need to change in the format for it to just take off.

To add context to the OP's take on Cranial plating, as I know a few people are not normally magic players: Equip costs can only be done at sorcery speed. However, if an ability attaches the equipment, such as Cranial platings (B)(B) effect, it can be done at instant speed. hope OP doesn't mind me adding that bit of context for people who don't know

Hold on a second, making an X/1 creature lose 1 toughness makes it die? There are creatures with 0 toughness though. Making an X/1 creature lose a toughness makes it an X/0 creature. Which is functionally the same as an X/1 but still. Since when has losing toughness been equivalent to taking damage?
@fernandobanda57342 жыл бұрын
It's not equivalent to dealing damage but it is true that a creature with toughness 0 or less dies. Check any X/0 creature and you'll see that they always have a way to increase their toughness. The only exception is a card from Future Sight, as that was an admittedly weird set.
@Neelo50002 жыл бұрын
Since the game was invented, actually. If a creature has 0 toughness when state-based effects are checked, it dies. Most creatures with a base toughness of 0 will enter the battlefield with at least one +1/+1 counter (like Kalonian Hydra, for example).
