"Like a turd in the wind" works a lot better in a comedy than a horror movie. And that's what "Venom" is: a comedy. They should have marketed it that way from the beginning, thrown a few more of the better one-liners into the trailers, maybe make a TV spot with all the times Venom talks about eating someone (or something), including Eddie's liver.

Finally decided to watch this despite all the negative reception and though it was far from a masterpiece and felt a bit choppy in places it was a pure unexpurgated joy that was far more of a jet black comedy than I'd expected and anchored by a hilariously hyperactive performance from Tom Hardy that made the film really come alive every moment he was on screen. Initially evoking memories of classic B movies like "The Hidden" and Frank Henenlotter's "Brain Damage" it suffered from a slightly forgettable bad guy and Michelle William's underused role but really excelled in its schizophrenic, manic, hyper energy and watching Tom Hardy dragged through sheer insanity by Venom. It did often feel, as was the case, that things were hastily edited and there was no doubt more footage on the cutting room floor but for all the negativity and fanboy whining that heralded its cinematic release it was just a big budget B movie that will probably perform well on home media and has all the makings of a future cult favourite. I'm certainly pleased I finally gave in to preconceptions as I had a hell of a lot of fun watching it and hope they can iron out the flaws and deliver a stellar sequel ...
