Venom's emotions go both ways when going through symbiosis. He only hated Spider-Man briefly because Peter was a complete douchebag to Venom since he felt betrayed, afraid and hurt. Now that I'm looking back at it, the way Peter treated Venom is like how Slave owners treated their slaves. Every time he "tries" to kill Spider-Man, he never actually kills him when he gets the chance since he wants to join back with Spider-Man so that his host could understand him. Poor Venom gets the short end of the stick. Venom hates Carnage like all other symbiotes who spawn their next gen. It's supposed to be a tradition for them to hate them so their offspring can grow strong, although it is bad in regards to a relationship.

Pretty sure the symbiotes are, by nature, good people, they just corrupt when bonded or exposed to humamity. So with Venom, his exposure corrupted him, but he still is good at heart so he has instinctive rage and yet feels the desire to help, which results in bad messes usually, but the reason Venom is a favorite of mine is because he overcomes this struggle on occasion to do great things. That and he's just badass.
