McGann should have been the "war Doctor." No need to create an extra regeneration because Chris said no. It would also have been a good way to add more classic who to the 50th Anniversary special

I think Paul Mcgann deserves 3 season with at least 8 episodes each, all of them set up in the Time War. They can even explain his ageing by the Time Lords making him obey their orders and taking some energy of his body, thus ageing him in the process. ;)

Yes, I know, but actually seeing the 8th flying the TARDIS again would be awesome. And from Big Finish, with Mcgann, I only heard the onde with Sheridan Smith and the first Doom Coalition series, and also last week, a multi-Doctor story, The Light At The End. They could write a pilot with two parts and bring Ashbrooke back for at least his first story, and then, along the way, introduce different companions but each one with a short period in the TARDIS.

My favourite episode has to be The Waters Of Mars. It's brilliantly directed, the writing is so on-point, it's utterly terrifying and shows a sense of tension that isn't present in most New Who episodes, and the ending still gives me chills to this day. What's your opinion on the episode?

10. Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon- I dunno why, I just love this one 9. Midnight- So dark and yet so brilliant 8. Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead- Almost Moffat's opus, which has since been replaced by number 4 7. The Waters of Mars- Absolutely terrifying 6. School Reunion- A truly magnificent story, beautifully tying Classic and New Who 5. Dalek- The Daleks have never been better since 4. Heaven Sent- Moffat's new opus, sadly followed by his nadir 3. Human Nature/Family of Blood- David Tennant gives quite possibly the best Who performance ever 2. Vincent and the Doctor- Utterly heartbreaking and complex. 1. The God Complex- My favourite story ever.

My only problem with _"Night of the Doctor"_ was the camera being mounted on a bobble head. My only problem with _"Midnight"_ was the fact that the passengers wore 20th century clothing, but given the state of recent Who, I'm more than willing to overlook that, in which case, "Midnight" is one of RTD's best contributions to DW, IMO. My only complaint with _"Vincent and the Doctor"_ was the sob song that played at the end, in an attempt to mimic modern network drama like Grey's Anatomy. Series 5 was pretty solid all the way though, to me, and was definitely Moffat's high point. I have to disagree with _"Turn Left,"_ though - I hated it, mainly because Rose was yet again made the most important woman in the universe. Plus, the plot made zero sense - if Rose had time travel capability to recruit Donna, why not just go to the intersection, set up a road block in the "wrong" direction, forcing Donna to turn left? You could have avoided the whole recruiting thing, and the awkward explanation of who you are and what you're doing. I like _"Heaven Sent"_ because it drew on puzzle/exploration elements similar to the Myst PC games and the Zelda games. It was The Doctor in a strange place exploring his surroundings, and us tagging alone waiting for him to put the pieces together. 100% Doctor Who formula. Everything else I agree on 100%. I'm surprised you didn't mention _"The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances,"_ as it was yet another example of when Moffat could write a solid gothic horror story that truly felt like a Doctor Who story in it's presentation. As bad as we wanted RTD gone, his era ended up being vastly superior to Moffat's in terms of quality.

I guess the reasons they wear contemporary clothes in Midnight is cuz any attempt to mock up 'future clothes' would quickly become dated an laughable.
@sixstanger00
@sixstanger00 8 жыл бұрын
Padaster But it would at least fit with the narrative being set in a different time period. Besides, the "dated" problem becomes two-fold using what they did - right off the bat, they look out of place, as if they were all snatched from 20th Century homes and thrown into the future on an alien pleasure planet. So even at the time it aired, they already looked out of place. Then there's the issue of real-world fashion changes - for example, they were wearing fashions popular in 2009, but in another 20 or 30 years, fashion styles will likely change again, making them still look "dated."

The problem with Night of the Doctor is that it completely destroys the Eighth Doctor’s character and derails any story arcs that could have worked
@iHuzza
@iHuzza 5 жыл бұрын
@@BattlestarZenobia It doesn't destroy his character at all, though? Pretty much everything that he said/did in the minisode makes sense within his character's continuity. I do agree with the character arc though, it would've been cool to see the 8th Doctor fight in the Time War and appear in Day of the Doctor, but in the end it's still great that we saw 8 at all, it would've been really easy just to not have Night of the Doctor exist at all, and have 8 regenerate into the War Doctor in a comic or something.

@christofferoff
@christofferoff 8 жыл бұрын
I loved certain elements of it, and the episode as a whole. Certain parts were badly explained and irritating as a result. Like, the entire concept of having a "space train". Why? Put it on a planet or something, but just having a random train going through space spewing smoke as if there was wind... the base-under-siege feeling came out beautifully, and don't get me wrong; the majority of it I absolutely adored, for once. But as scary and exciting as it was, nothing in it was very well explained at all.
@petra2578
@petra2578 8 жыл бұрын
+Christofferoff Well the train was trying to be a homage to the past, hence the old style and steam. And, if they were on a planet, it would be less dangerous, as the train could be stopped and everyone could get off, and the scene with the cooking staff being ejected into space wouldn't have worked. The train being in space made it seem more as though the passengers were isolated, and couldn't turn to anyone for help.

Even in the case Paul McGann never makes a new appearance on television ever again, I still take solace in the fact that has has performed for dozens of Doctor Who stories for Big Finish. I know that's not the same as television, but I'd rather take Big Finish and just brush away an idea we might never get than call the Big Finish stories "not good enough" and just continue to ask for something we might never get. Also, as much of a gem Heaven Sent is, I feel that the biggest reason why it turned out as great as it did was because Steven was putting his focus into that the most out of the 10 stories he worked on in Series 9. It's stuff like that is why I hope the process of having a writer work on at least five Doctor Who stories per year is abandoned at some point.

The thing about Doctor Who is, if they want, they can have a flashback episode. By that I mean that we could have an episode where Doctor 13 reminisces about an adventure of Doctor 8, and we could have an entire episode featuring Doctor 8, or 10 or 11, etc. I wonder if they thought of that before but decided not to for reasons. That said, now might be just a matter of time until someone does that, probably. It would be interesting. That said, Martha and Donna are my fave companions. And Midnight is also one of my faves, a brilliant ultra-contained story properly milked.

Dalek is the only Dalek episode of new Who where the Doctor was afraid. Daleks now are all philosophical. Why am I here? What is the meaning of life? Dalek as an episode was where one Dalek showed why they should be feared. The Doctor not being afraid of any of the villains kind of lessens things. He doesn't feel anything is really a threat then we won't either. Dalek was excellent all round and it aired on the night my daughter was born. Her early tantrums I attribute to Dalek hatred of bedtimes.

Returning home should have been a moment of euphoria, but ended up being bitter, angry and resentful. He mopes around blaming the High Council for his ordeal and throws his arrogant weight around, but it was a self inflicted imprisonment and negates the entire plot of the episode. But of course we can't all like the same things so it is what it is and we just need to get over it.

Must confess I too, loved Turn Left, and Heaven Sent. Bernard Cribbins was incredible in it. Also I think Peter Capaldi has been well served by the stories. Despite 'Kill The Moon', I loved season 8, he does play the darker parts better. I absolutely loved 'Dalek', when it first came out. Genuinely believing that the Daleks were being written out of 'Who', for copyright reasons. Their return for the Season finale was so disappointing, and disheartening, it undercut 'Dalek' for me.

Human Nature/Family of Blood is one of my favourite Tennant stories, but how much better would it have been if Moffat and Davies hadn't been intent on getting The Doctor, as a Time Lord, romantically entangled repeatedly with humans beforehand?! If the key point is The Doctor, never being human before, hadn't counted on the fact that humans fall in love, then perhaps it would have been better if Girl In The Fireplace and taken place some time after and not before.

I'd guess the reason why they don't keep remaking Blink is cause they know it's a lightning in a bottle one off. Like Caves of Androzani and Earthshock was a good one off, but then in 6 and 7 they tried to redo the popular elements. Like Warriors of the Deep is a lame Earthshock for example.

I enjoyed the one with Matt Smith (not one of my favourite Doctors) where the little girl had to sing to keep the vampire asleep. Also I thought McGann could have been the war Doctor without a new regeneration. His Doctor in the film was certainly dark and gritty enough and he a good actor that could carry the personality of the WD. The one about the Titanic with Kylie was a powerful story but as I have said before the Xmas specials should be in their own class.

My favourite episode of new who is between midnight and the waters of Mars. Midnight because of its characters, the intensity, and that it's very well written. I love waters because it takes an idea from a previous episode (fires of Pompeii, which is also great) and expands on it, it's the only episode of the specials to take advantage of the Doctor being companion less and the last 10 minutes were shocking to say the least. Other favourite episodes include (besides the ones on this list) utopia, the zygon inversion, parting of their ways, Amy's choice, doomsday, day of the Doctor, etc.

It occurred to me now to bring up a question I have about Midnight. Was the Entity using phrases like Allons-y the work of the Doctor or the entity because if it's the Entity why would it be using words like that for no real reason except arrogance and if it's the Doctor how is he able to say that but not that anything a bit more useful. The whole voice taking process is confusing in this regard because if it's supposed to be ahead of what it was repeating then why would the Doc be saying to throw him out.

100% agree about Martha and Human Nature/Family of Blood. Human Nature/Family Blood, is imo very much like classic who and that's probably because apparently it was written for the 7th Doctor! Honestly the scene where The Doctor takes Vincent to the gallery, is one of my favourite moments in the shows history. Heaven Sent is probably one of the best stand alone episodes, but Hell Bent and Face the Raven really let it down.

My favorite from new-who is Parting of the Ways. It's a nice reminder that there used to be actual stakes in Doctor Who as well as real non-soap opera type drama. People actually die, people that are nice and sweet and we feel bad for them and what to see more of them, people that the Doctor PROMISES would be okay, but the Daleks don't care, they don't work for the BBC, they can kill whoever they want and they want to kill everyone that's not them, so they do. They're actually scary in that episode and you legitimately feel like anyone could die next. I really miss this kind of thing.

Great top 10. All these episodes I hold in high regard accept perhaps Turn Left. Rose coming back really negates her departure. My top 10 has lots of series 1 episodes mostly due to nostalgia and it being my introduction to the show way back in 2005 10. Boom Town (So underrated, I can't believe this episode explores the psyche of a farting Alien but it was amazing to watch. The Doctor dining with one of his enemies is a stroke of genius.) 9. Rose (A brilliant re-introduction to the show which proved that Doctor Who can appeal to both old and new audiences. Using the Autons as the first villain was a very good call and I like how there invasion plan was a backdrop to the introduction to the Doctor and Rose. I also love the set up of the companion living such a mundane hum drum life.) 8. Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways (The best finale of the new series by far. The Game Station is a brilliant macabre concept. Discovering the Daleks were behind it all was a great twist along with the regeneration. It took me by surprise back then because I didn't follow the show religiously like I do now. This episode changed all of that.) 7. A Christmas Carol (Xmas specials are very hit and miss for me. With this one i loved the Sci-Fi retelling of the Dickens classic. It was imaginative, weird and the characters were a lot more established and had a much better arc than the shitty Narnia special.) 6. The Christmas Invasion (This episode shouldn't work but it really does.This episode taught me to embrace change a great message to my 12 year old self. The episode still contains dark subject matter despite being festive. David Tennant spends most of his time having a nap in this episode but when the Doctor recovers he really impresses.) 5. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit (This 2 parter is so eery and dark it's hard to believe it's followed by the 2 worst episodes in who history. I love how this episode reinvigorates the base under siege formula by putting the fucking devil in it) 4. The Waters of Mars (Another dark and eery base under siege story which also challenges the Doctors beliefs similar to how Satan Pit did. This to me should've been Tennant's regeneration story his meddling with time should've been his downfall. I also love the idea of how this episode could potentially happen in my life time.) 3. The Eleventh Hour (Before this episode aired I was done with Doctor Who. I thought I was too old for the show and felt Matt Smith's Doctor looked too childish. I was very wrong and actually found myself relating to his quirky and awkward nature and became engrossed in the story arc. (Unlike recently grr) I love post regenration stories its when The Doctor is most vunerable and he has to prove himself to the audience and his companion that HE IS THE DOCTOR! This one to me is the best of the lot because of how much was riding against it. It's very much New Who's Spearhead from Space. 2. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances (The nighttime setting of this story piles on the atmosphere to this bleak story. I also love the delicate balance of humour and horror something which Moffat used to excel at. (Fuck Missy grr) Who can forget the brilliant resolution to that cliffhanger?) 1. Blink (It’s astonishing how amazing this episode is by having a small appearance from the titular character. This episode takes a very different approach to typical Doctor Who episodes forming something truly unique by following 2 new characters having to face the terrifying weeping angels and figure out The Doctor’s seemingly random message on 17 DVD’s. Out of all the wibbly wobbly timey wimey stories this one is by far the best and is the clearest to follow. I would love to see Sally Sparrow return for a future episode but that seems unlikely. A must watch for just anyone fan or otherwise, this may sound like a slight exaggeration but I think Blink is one of best pieces of television I have ever seen!

Rose coming back exemplified how the show was willing to toss sci-fi to the side and introduce plot elements like "There's a gap between universes just so Rose Tyler can make a brief appearance in this episode." Sci-fi isn't supposed to be so transparently scripted.

I have more than one problem with this two-parter, but what ruined everything to me is the ending. Which makes it clear that the Doctor can defeat and torture the bloody family of blood so easily. And that running away was just he being "kind" to them. So, as the flashback earlier shows: the Doctor already knew who the family of blood is, and what they can and will do to find him. Yet he chose to hide in a human village, endangered all its residents' lives just to be kind to a family of bloody murderous bodysnatchers...

Time to do the stereotypical thing for any person commenting on a top 10 list by telling you mine. 10. The Doctor's Wife (A brilliant episode in of itself with ideas that would be great for a movie) 9. Heaven Sent (The episode that made us believe in Moffat again and by far 12's finest hour) 8. The Girl Who Waited (The highlight of the Amy, Rory relationship as well as one of 11's darker moments) 7. Blink (The episode that solidified Moffat as New Who's best writer.....until Series 6 as well as proving that less is more) 6. Vincent and the Doctor (As stated in the video it's the subtext that can be seen on repeated viewings that make this such a treasure) 5. Dalek (Without a doubt the Daleks at their best) 4. Midnight (It's funny how the best episodes from 10's era are the ones that take him out of his element, are scary as shit, or both) 3. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances (Steven Moffat's first script is by and large still one of his best) 2. Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways (Ex Machina ending aside it showed off my favorite New Who Doctor at his finest hour) 1. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang

One of the weakest aspects of Human Nature is that the contrast between 10 and John Smith is not that big cause the show had shown Ten to not only be more human than other Doctors but also fall in love with Rose Tyler. The transition made a lot more sense for the original book's Seventh Doctor

10. The Witches Familiar - But only for the scene between the Doctor and Davros. I thought that was scene was great. 9. Under the Lake/Before the Flood - Pretty much the best BUS story New Who has written, with some interesting timey wimey stuff thrown in. 8. Empty Child/Doctor Dances - A great horror/sci-fi story with a simple but effective threat. 7. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit - A dark survival story that's reminiscent of the old Alien movies. 6. Blink - I love Sally Sparrow's character and was such a shame she was never made into a full-time companion, plus the Angels were pretty effective monsters before been run into the ground. 5. The Girl Who Waited - Without a doubt one of the most emotional Doctor Who stories I've ever watched 4. Amy's Choice - I find it to be a very good story with an interesting plot that I'm surprised hasn't been done to death. 3. Dalek - The best example of what a Dalek is. A cold-blooded killer who will never hesitate on killing anything or anyone that isn't a Dalek. And the dynamics between the Doctor and the Dalek are wonderfully written. I can understand why this is your favourite writer, Stuart. Such a shame he only did one story for the show. 2. Heaven Scent - Capaldi at his best. I just pray that he gets more like this. 1. Night of the Doctor- I would have loved it if his Doctor was in the actual 50th Anniversary. It's easily one of the best episodes Doctor Who has made in a while and yet it's only 7 minutes long. Plus Paul McGann deserves a full episode and not some one-off episode that's only on the internet.
@menkomonty
@menkomonty 8 жыл бұрын
Okay, fair enough. I felt the Under the Lake/Before the Flood was different to what we usually had with a BUS story, throwing in time travel paradoxes to spice up the story. Reminded me of The Ocarina of Time except that didn't have a Power Ranger villain show up at the end. I will admit that the opening to Before the Flood where the Doctor talks to the audience was one thing that I didn't like as it did break the mood of the story, but I completely forgot about it as soon as the story started rolling. Also the Fisher King not killing the Doctor is just one of those old tropes in films and TV where the villain has ample time to kill the hero but doesn't for no real reason. As for The Girl Who Waited, I liked the situation as it gave Amy and Rory some more character. I find this to be the best story Rory has been in as he gets to do stuff other than die for the umpteenth time. It's emotional but the situation is one that shows how much Amy and Rory love each other. And Night of the Doctor, my biggest complaint is that Paul McGann deserves more screen time in Doctor Who. And as I said, I would've loved it if he was in the 50th Anniversary. As for the Sisterhood of Karn, I'm not really that bothered by them, they were just there for some visual fan service.

i know this video is a bit old but i hope that you read this as i jumped out of my seat when i found this out. Vincent and the Doctor ended with Vincent beating depression, the reason he killed himself is in the episode: The Pandorica opens, let me explain. In that episode we find everyone traumatized cause of a painting, or a painting Vincent himself painted of the TARDIS exploding, you could see the terror in his eyes as he got that vision and he thinking it would explode and his friends would die. That is the reason he killed himself. Not cause he was depressed but because of the visions of the new galaxy being formed.

I can't really rank these because I've forgotten half of the episodes and I really don't have time to watch 10 series and god knows how many specials, but here are some I have fond memories of Dalek - this made the Daleks scary The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances - An interesting horror idea, with decent payoff, love Captain Jack School Reuinion - Sarah Jane and K9, nuff said The Idiot's Lantern - it's a guilty pleasure, I'll admit it Turn Left - a fantastic Tate episode The Stolen Earth/Journey's end - highly flawed but you gotta admire it's ambition, and for the most part gave everyone something to do The Doctor's Wife - Fun Night of the Doctor - what Stu said Time Heist - I may be alone in liking this episode but I really like this episode Mummy on the Orient Express - great concept with decent execution Dark Water/Heaven Sent/Space Enough and Time - all great episodes with ok to godawful second halves The Zygon Inversion - I just love that speech

FWIW. I love Vincent and the Doctor, but my number 1 would be The Girl Who Waited. The Empty Child might actually be ahead of anything else (and I don't just mean Doctor Who, I mean anything else I've ever seen on TV) if it was a standalone, but IMO The Doctor Dances while very good, wasn't quite up to that same level.

While I agree that Turn Left is great it has a major logic problem: Fires of Pompeii. Because the Doctor dies at this point in his timeline then he can't go on to make sure Pompeii is destroyed like history records allowing the Pyrovilia to take over the planet. The ripples though the Doctor's personal timeline would be more then seen in the audio drama "He Jests at Scars...". In fact the Valeyard is another problem: he came into being sometime after the Doctor's 12th regeneration which if the Doctor must have for the .Valeyard to even exist. (Personally I think the whole thing was a smoke screen for the Valeyard to highjack the body of the Keeper.0

This list is almost spot-on to my own. I duly noted that a lot of these are RTD entries, and not Moffat entries, and there is a reason why: Because while RTD liked being camp, melodramatic, and preachily political too much for his own good, all of these things are infinitely better than being pretentious. And by pretentious, I don't mean "too smart for me, I no get it", by pretentious, I mean that it mystifies and assigns too much importance to something that has little relevance. My point is that about half of the time, Steven Moffat's morals on his run boil down to "Doctor Who is awesome, and it will never ever change in spirit or approach show-changing territory other than exchanging companions, and thus upset the fans or else it will stop being awesome!" They're circular and assign too much importance to the show itself, and not enough to the outside world that affects the viewers. And what's more, they waste so much time doing this that the show ceases to be fun. That's the advantage RTD has over Moffat, he's _fun_

10. I ended up enjoying this one a lot on recent reflection too and Martha has definately rocketed up in my companion rankings recently because of this one. Also, with the ending, you can tell that this was based on a 7th Doctor book, it feels very "Oh, Davros... I am far more than just another Time Lord"-y 9. I have to admit I don't think this one is as good as most people say. I mean, there's not much wrong with it (aside from me never being all that invested in the River Song stuff, even in 2008), just not as good as Empty Child and Blink. Though the stuff with Donna in the library seems like exactly the sort of thing that I can see him writing if he made the jump to Big Finish (which, I would geniunely like to see one day) 8. My favourite story from the Matt Smith run! I was also worried about the concept, as it did seem a bit Saturday Morning Cartoon-ish, but it was played with enough dignity for me to be invested. Love the Tim Burton aesthetic too 7. As much as I love this one and just kinda like what they've done with The War Doctor, they totally should have just thrown McGann into the 50th. I mean, 8 getting a bit darker and fighting off the Daleks in a war between them, the Time Lords and a few other smaller factions was the plot of Dark Eyes and Moffat even gave a recommendation for it on their website. But still, the 6 minute short was about 10 times better than the movie (and I'm in the camp that actually likes it a fair bit) 6. Another one I've come to appreciate a bit more recently. My favourite thing about it is that no one is quite sure what the creature is, even after the events of the story. Adds a nice extra chill factor to it 5. Interesting angle to look at it there. I have to admit that I was never big on this one only really liking the last 10-15 minutes after the monster is killed, but the Invisible Monster idea has improved it a bit more for me in that respect 4. Yeah, virtually everyone loves this one. I only have 2 complaints: 1. I never found the Angels scary (I find the Kitlings from Survival geniunely terrifying, oddly enough though, so I'm just weird like that), and 2. I wouldn't call this the best one to start people off with. It's really good, yes, but it's not exactly representative of Doctor Who's normal stuff. It's like starting off the X-Men movies with Deadpool. Deadpool is a really good movie. Just not exactly a good jumping off point for someone wanting to get into the X-Men movies. 3. Fuck me, this episode was depressing... I FUCKING LOVE IT! It's also kinda uplifting as well. Donna doing something as mundane as deciding to take another job, a decision that you would think would only affect her, leading to countless deaths because she wasn't there to save the world proves that she matters as a human being. And because of how average Donna is, the message applies to us as well... yeah, easy to see which showrunner I'm a fanboy of, isn't it? lol 2. This is a tragic love story, me and this episode... it's downright perfect and I fall harder and harder for it each time I watch it... and then it goes and betrays everything that it and the previous episode stood for the very next week, whilst making feel like I've wasted a number of years of being a fan of NuWho. WHY WON'T YOU LET ME LOVE YOUR EPISODES, MOFFAT?! But yeah, my favourite single Capaldi episode so far. 1. My favourite episode of Doctor Who, including Classic, NuWho and Big Finish. This one is the one that made me a Whovian back in 2005 and I bloody love it to pieces!

tbh, when u said for capaldi era that 'the writers seem to still be writing for matt smith', I don't really blame them, bc the doctor always had a lighter side. even in the hartnell era, the doctor still developed a lighter, funnier side to him. while I love capaldi in the darker/moodier/deeper moments, I wouldn't want him to act like that for his entire 3 yr run. it would get old very fast, (in fact it did get old very fast for me), and it would not give the doctor any range. and that's the point about the doctor: emotionally, the doctor HAS RANGE. He has always had the ability to be serious, and then comedic a little while later. so, I don't think the writers were wrong in that way, since it's been in almost every doctor's era. while I admit that capaldi doesn't always hit his funnier lines and always show his range, I like that he at least attempted it. overall, I like ur list, tho I admit that mine is completely different (and unpopular. I suppose, the closest I can narrow it down in New Who is my top 20, and that would be: 20) empty child/doctor dances 19) impossible planet/satan's pit 18) 42 17) blink 16) smith and jones 15) Shakespeare code 14) gridlock 13) heaven's sent 12) mummy on the orient express 11) hide 10) time of the angels, flesh in stone 9) turn left 8) eleventh hour 7) silence in the library/forest of the dead 6) the god complex 5) impossible astronaut/day on the moon 4) amy's choice 3) pandorica opens/big bang 2)the doctor's wife 1) Vincent and the doctor
