I have a 2006 Vibe and the transmission just crapped out at 213,000 miles. I tried to get a new one put in but it turns out they don't make them anymore. They don't even make all the parts for the transmission anymore so getting it rebuilt is a crapshoot, and I can't afford to have my car out of commission for long. I absolutely hate to part with it, I also thought it would last forever. Has an almost brand new radiator, brand new front brakes. It's a real bummer, in my mind the best car ever made. Good luck!

I bought a high mile Mazda3 a couple years back and that has been bullet proof. If you're gonna get into used cars then a great vid would be how to tell city miles versus highway miles. Mine had grill chips, dead bugs in the radiator fins, no carpet wear (by the pedals), non worn corner of the seats, slightly worn seat belts and steering wheel.

I can remember my dad being shocked when the neighbors bought a brand new 1966 Olds Ninety Eight four door with AC, power everything and an AM-FM stereo. He couldn't believe they paid $4,700 (US). And now $10,000 won't buy any new car, at least in North America.

$20,000 won't even today for the majority of new vehicles. Most even entry level $22,000-$30,000+. Basic trims start around $22,000-$26,000 range for most from what I've seen. For a depreciating asset no less that only lasts for a limited time. Requires routine maintenance and requires insurance to operate. While needing to pay for fuel for it weekly.

Exactly right advice. You buy a slice of a car's life. A good car lasts 20 years in good condition, an average car 15....however few cars are priced at 20k new which is a grand a year. Buying early to mid life is the sweet spot. The new car driver is always overpaying for their 3 to 5 years in a car. The banger buyer is always dealing with a car in a nursing home. If you can get a 4 to 8 year old car with one owner for $9k and get 9 years good service....you win the car lottery.

Great video ❤ In my experience, the best used cars to get are always Lexus, Toyota or Mazdas. I have had terrible experience with used Honda that were made last 15 years because they burned oil and eventually cylinder failed in every instance. All dealer maintained as well…maybe the dealers were corrupt. The wheel wells rust, subframe rusting, engine failures, fuel lines rusting, starter issues, relay issues, stabilizer links, ball joints, struts and etc. What had happened to Honda and it’s quality?

Another vehicle I would recommend are two midsize sedans that share the same platform: a 2010-12 Ford Fusion and a 2009-2013 Mazda6. As a former used car dealer, I approve this list and if I may add to it for those with a family, yet still looking for something under 10k, The often overlooked Mazda-6 ! If you you can find one with no rust, you are in luck, Even with high mileage, chances are it has all tuneup done on it, so all you'd have to do is rustproof it, put gas in it and change the oil regularly. Mazda-6 drives similar to Honda Accords, but on a lower price tag. You will appreciate the larger size when going on long trips! I see those thing for sale with 4 to 500,000 Kms on it's odo..

Another one I would also recommend, but often overlooked, is the 2010-12 Ford Fusion, which shared the same platform and powertrain as the Mazda6. Plus, the 2010-12 Fusion didn't have the problematic EcoBoost engines that came on the 2013-20 Fusion.

The 2008-2012 Scion xB had oil consumption issues. However, Toyota did a recall because the piston rings were too small and oil would burn - the worst case scenario is you'd have to add oil every 1500 miles before your next oil change.. All the other Scion xB models are fine except those oil consumption issue years.

@@ZAT1playerxX13Xx Around here you have to get a very old one with body issues to have it under $10,000. People hate to sell them. I got a Legacy at the end of 2019 with two outstanding recalls at a distant dealership I did at the start of covid :( , that had been hit in a parking lot which destroyed a heated mirror and the windshield, and needed its 100,000 mile work on timing belt etc plus a new battery. A 2012. My dealership fixed the mirror and windshield as part of the price. I added remote start and last year had some rust removal and then the engine work. That was an added $3000. All told, around $10,000 if you consider the trade in of the miserable 2011 Chevy Cruze I only kept a year. I got it for our winters and it has done great. Tremendous heater. Great defroster. I wish it had the clearance of a Forester to drive over snow in our parking lot and a large trunk.

No, it's not. You'll have oil consumption issues with the early 1ZZ-FE engines and the 2AZ-FE engines, but not much else.
