Loved John Wick. It seems like every decade, Reeves has a movie that's a blow-out success. Maybe JW wasn't a massive financial success, but it made pretty decent bank and was critically well-received by most movie-goers. One of the best pure action films of the last 10 years.

Your description of Edge of Tomorrow as "he goes through the day, dies, and uses uses what he's learned to his advantage" reminded me of how I approach most video games. Hell, the "repeating the same series of events to ultimately save the world" concept made me think of Majora's Mask more than it did Groundhog Day.

I really do appreciate your general concern and talent to explain the plot quite enjoyably without spoiling anything. Especially in the Edge of Tomorrow bit, I was speechless how you managed to dodge giving out any spoiler on the driving factor of story which basically sets the base of it. Thanks a bunch for the great work

I actually really enjoyed Coherence. It is the first time I have watched a film that was filmed hand held like that, which I really enjoyed, particularly on the budget it had, of like $2000. I thought it was incredible for that. I think the dialogue worked really well to make it seem like a real thing that was actually happening and the rough camera work was about to make it tense. Which, before people hate on me for saying that, watch something like Terminator 2, even that uses fast cuts and shaky camera work in certain scenes to build tension. It DOES work.. sometimes. But seriously, if you love science fiction and film making and are love independent films, i really do urge you to check it out. But my top 10 is: 1. Interstellar 2. The Guest 3. Nightcrawler 4. The Signal 5. I Origins 6. The Grand Budapest Hotel 7. It Follows 8. The One I Love 9. Fury 10. X-Men I have a full list on imdb, here www.imdb.com/list/ls058849992/?publish=save

After first watching May (another film suggested by Cecil) my missis thought I was into (and I quote) "super fucked up shit" and she's been pretty sketchy since. This might be my favorite best of list, you've ever done. 2014 was a great year for movies. Lost Soul, is on par with the Apocalypse Now documentary, and one of the strangest stories, of a movie getting made ever. Stanley could've done some great things, if not for that life event.

Just checked out Blue Ruin. You were right again. You know, I get the feeling from watching older movies that once upon a time, sadly before my time, Hollywood actually put out Good Stories. I'm not sure what happened. What made this a rare straight-to-video find and put Jupiter Rising on the big screen. But if it was alive it should be shot.

I enjoyed your recap and I am in agreement for most of your list. It is also funny to think about how much we have learned about Paz DeLaHuerta and what an absolute train wreck her career took, and before everyone gets complete bent, I do not mean her accusations of HW, she absolutely did the right thing by coming forward I mean the stories of her being impossible to work with due to full blown diva behavior fueled by cocaine and instead of fighting the allegations by becoming a better talent by slowly creating a full body of work until the allegations went away she doubled down with this lawsuit and many, many others making it so people just were afraid to work with her for fear she would sue down the road when shit ddn’t go her way. Anyway, great video as usual and now I am off to see the Guest.

I watched The Guest and I loved it. My only problems with the movie get into spoilers so SPOILER WARNING...Go watch The Guest though. 1. Luke being the hero, the whole movie built up making us think Anna would be the hero and they just made it Luke. I understand they wanted to give him a character ark but they accomplished that when he hit the bully. 2. The military officer, he felt like a cheap way to get David to kill the mother, to let Anna know her parents are dead, to explain why David is the way he is, and to get Anna to Luke. They killed him off the first chance they got once Anna was where she needed to be so he felt pointless.

My main issue with the new Ninja Turtles movie wasn't really how absurdly huge they were. It was the movie's lack of focus. Instead of the central conflict being between the turtles and the foot clan, it was April O'Neil vs some rich scientist dude that worked with her father and was working with the foot clan. The only reason the turtles and the foot clan were in there was to justify calling it Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

While I liked the Godzilla 2014 movie, I was disappointed with it overall, as Godzilla only had about 8 minutes of screentime in a movie about him, so I ended up feeling like there wasn't enough Godzilla to justify it being a Godzilla movie, for all intensive purposes they could've replaced Godzilla entirely with another giant monster and it would've been the same experience. Plus they killed off Bryan Cranston within the first hour, which is a waste of perfectly good Bryan Cranston

My best of the year: 5: Godzilla I saw a lot of people complaining about the lack of Godzilla in the movie, but I personally found the Mutos to be perfectly capable of conducting the lead-up to the climax. A few plot holes and stupid characters here and there, but all in all, a smarter and generally better than average monster flick. 4: John Wick Imagine that you still remember all the imaginary gun fights and characters that you invented at preschool when you're an adult. You then acquire some advanced techniques and contacts to famous stars and become a director. You would most likely make John Wick. 3: Nightcrawler This is a very weird-good movie (and not in the overused way). It's not the type of weird-good like the nerdy kid at the front of the class who isn't perfect but still has his charms and quirks. It's more the lonely kid who always sits at the back and has general social issues. The only thing you know about him is that he likes birdwatching. You ask to come with him to go birdwatching and he accepts. You ask his why he likes birdwatching and he gives you a shockingly deep and philosophical answer. Also, Jake Gylenhaal as Norman Bates for Psycho remake. 2: Birdman Holy Christ it takes a fantastic movie to truly resonate with me in the way this one does. 1: The Grand Budapest Hotel My god I did not realise how much I missed good physical comedy until I watched this movie. The actors crank it up to eleven in all the good ways, the framing and art design is absolutely gorgeous and it is incredibly funny. I was gonna fit The Lego Movie in, but couldn't find the right place. Still a phenomenal movie. Best year for movies in...well years.

Great video, and great list. I actually did a top 11 films of 2014 video at the end of December. At the time I did that video I had not yet seen Nightcrawler or John Wick, or Edge of Tomorrow, now I've seen those films and love them. My top 11 at the time were; 11. Tusk (I know that movie was a mixed bag for a lot of people, but I enjoyed it really because of how weird it was) 10. The Purge: Anarchy (I agree with you, that film is lightyears better than the first film) 9. The Lego Movie 8. Big Hero 6 7. Godzilla (That movie did have a lot of flaws, but I still really enjoyed it) 6. Under The Skin 5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier 4. Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes 2. Gone Girl (You're dead on with your take on the movie) 1. The Babadook (That was my personal favorite film of last year, I found it to be both a very creepy horror film, and a very moving drama film) I actually have not heard of the movie Blue Ruin, until I watched this video, but now I really want to check it out, it sounds like a film that is right up my alley.

The Guest was fantastic! I ended up taking a risk on it by buying it on Blu-Ray (for $22, that is a lot over my normal max amount) and I regret nothing. Even my mother who doesn't like slow burn films actually liked the film.

My favorite films of 2014 were The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Whipash, The Look of Silence, Mommy, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Birdman, Gone Girl, Song of the Sea, Winter Sleep, Art and Craft, The Raid 2, Interstellar, The LEGO Movie, Two Days One Night, Force Majeure, It Follows, Inherent Vice, The Babadook, A Most Violent Year, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, The Guest, The Imitation Game, Clouds of Sils Maria, Mr. Turner, Wild, Still Alice, Under the Skin, Foxcatcher, Ida, Lost River, The Dance of Reality, We Are the Best, Nymphomaniac ( Extended Director's Cut ), and my favorite of the year, Goodbye to Language. They are all films I would highly recommend, and these are all films I would give at least a 7, most much higher. I'm pretty sure you haven't heard of many of these, but I would recommend watching them.

Love your work. i hear a lot of school words. Mind if I ask what areas of study ?? Also, back off my "Lucy". I know, there will never be an Academy Award for it, no matter how much Morgan Freeman you put in it. But I'd have a Scar Jo "sandwich" breakfast, lunch, and dinner, of it were possible !

Thanks! I have a background in radio and editing. I had high hopes for Lucy and I do like Scarlet but the weird editing and stupid plot prevented me from liking it. Lots of talent involved but the end result was silly.

Good list! I am going to check out those. Especially "Lost Soul". There are now two documentaries about Cannon films, one by the director of "Not Quite Hollywood". If you want another bad movie for 2014, check out "The Pyramid". Aja produced it but if he had directed it, it probably would have turned out better. It starts out as a found footage film but turns into a found footage/traditional narrative hybrid. It was not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination but I couldn't hate it. I am a freak for anything Ancient Egyptian.

The lady in Nurse was notoriously difficult to work with before that movie even came out. People on Boardwalk Empire stated she was horrible to be around and acted like she was above everyone else in talent, so, she ruined her career, not that movie...but it sure did suck.
