Dredd was such an amazing surprise, it was everything an action movie should be while also being a beautiful work of art. I am ashamed that I didn't see it in theaters. Bought the DVD though.

One of the things with Prometheus that people missed is that the alien at the end is different because it gestated in an Engineer. The aliens take on elements of whoever or whatever they gestate in, which is why it looked to be a different breed. The Alien in 3 was more feral since it gestated in a dog. We just know the ones from Alien and Aliens mostly since they all were in humans.

I liked Looper very much. It was a solid film and JGL gave a great performance. That said, I just felt these films were stronger. It was a tough year there was quite a few quality films.

I agree completely. That's exactly why I love Cecil's show. No stupid skits, insightful comments instead of just yelling (because in those shows, they somehow believe that yelling in itself is a joke), and most importantly Cecil genuinely loves these movies, flaws and all, and it shows. He does actual research and gives behind the scenes info that not only adds great depth and entertainment to the review, but also explains why some of the great bits or flaws exist in the first place.

Another Excellent List. Seen all of your best list, and enjoyed all of them. Bobcat has been doing some great movies, since way back when, with Shakes The Clown. He didn't direct for a decade after that, but he's been steadily working since 2000. Also, if you haven't seen it, Sleeping Dog's Lie is a great movie. Done on a tight budget, that has the humor of a rom-com, yet brings up real issues in relationships, that standard fare won't touch. He's also done Willow Creek and the brutal doc, Call Me Lucky, since you released this list, both worth a watch.

Yeah, I am slacking on the Troma. Love em. I read Lloyd's books and they are great. Hysterically funny and informative. (especially "Everything I learned...") He's great too, seem him at a bunch of cons over the years. I think Surf Nazis was the only Troma film I've done so far (that I can think off the top of my head) and that was only distributed by them, it wasn't one of theirs.

I loved Prometheus I think the fact is it did not show how the aliens were made, the xenomorph shown in the credits is probably a new type. Prometheus is a movie set in the alien universe but not focused on aliens. It is going to be a trilogy and yet people wanted all the answers in the first one.

I give Jiro Dreams of Sushi a lot of credit. It made me want to book a flight to Japan just to eat this guys sushi. Great documentary. The Kill List had an ending that genuinely had me shocked. Rarely do movies come along that make the last 10 minutes worth the entire film. “Two weeks!”

(pt 2) There is an overwhelming amount of folks who do nothing but wag their finger at every little "bad" thing people do but refuse to look into their own lives & see they are a pile of garbage. The film called out much of the "pile on" media we have in the news and entertainment today. One person does something and then every vulture climbs on to either vilify or profit or both. It's sickening. I just thought it was refreshing to see a movie go for the throat & call this trash out.

Thanks! I could see Lovely Molly not being for everyone. Structurally, it was different from most and I applauded them for doing something that strayed from the norm. Still, I can see it being off putting for some. Actually, I've had a few people tell me they did enjoy Silent Hill Revelation. Not the best movie out there but far from the worst. I think Shark Night and Priest are the 2 I've got the most grief over. lol I do have odd tastes but I'm pretty easy to find something to watch.

Hobbit was good but it didn't resonate with me like LotR. I didn't give it an honorable mention because, well, I was trying to go for more lesser known titles. Most film critics really want to be film makers so good for him. I think they did a very good job of skipping many of the usual cliches that hamper most horror films.

Um, no. I gravitate towards movies that are entertaining or movies that have heart. I have plenty of patience when it comes to more "artistic" films but all too often the artistic films just way too hard to be just that. I did see the Master, I just didn't care for it. Certain movies like Amour would have been mentioned but I couldn't get a copy and needed to get this list up. The movies I put in my top10 are ones I know I will watch over and over.

While I loved Jiro Dreams of Sushi its not something I could find myself watching over and over like Dredd. I often watch a ton of foreign films and lambast hollywood for their lack of substance. Yep, for me if the movie entertained me I like it. No turning my nose at certain genres. Resident Evil was a good time! I can't wait for the next one. V/H/S started off rough but about halfway through the first tape I was all in. Very clever and cool premise. Looking forward to the next one. For Dredd, typical marketing blunders. They had no idea how to push the film so they just showed a bunch of random action blaring loud music. I didn't hate Battleship, it was just dumb.
@GoodBadFlicks
@GoodBadFlicks 11 жыл бұрын
While Battleship was bad, at least I derived some enjoyment out of it. (by laughing at it) The Total Remake on the other hand did nothing but annoy me. They had lens flares to the point of absurdity but beyond that even though it was a clone of the original, they managed to make it as dull as humanly possible. It had none of the flair of the original and even though it wholesale stole many classic moments, it was done so badly that I stopped caring. The poster child for how not to do a remake.

Total Recall was such an unnecessary remake. Overly expensive, and loaded with lens flares. I feel bad for all the artists that worked on the film. Many of the visuals were striking but because there was so much blandness going on around them, I just didn't care.

Thanks. All good, like I said these are just what I liked. Cabin was just a love letter to the genre for me. Perry was ok but he was filling Morgan Freeman's shoes in the role and he's just not that level. It was the directing that killed it for me. I wouldn't mind reading the essay on Total Recall if you want to send it to me. TR was such a waste. All that talent to do a re-skin of a classic movie.

Take care, keep the videos coming and maybe you could make a video about aspect ratios; I always wondered why the fuck do so many people fuck the AR up by e.g. stretching a 4:3 picture to a widescreen format, and why the fuck do so little people care about that.

Delon Luu I haven't seen it yet, but I plan on checking it out. In retrospect, if you look at his performance in Django and look at his performance as Electro, Electro left a lot to be desired. I felt afraid of Django at certain points because he was unpredictable and always present. I feel that if the script had given Foxx more room to use his own inspiration on how to portray the character and more focus/screen time, he could've been a lot more menacing. I know, I've said it before, but I feel that Foxx was being held back on some kind of leash from showing his full potential. Some of his lines when the fights are in full-CG mode sound like it's not even Jamie Foxx, nevermind an electrical Jamie Foxx. "You ain't stopping me this time! Come on!" I don't mean to be a pointless complainer, but Electro had the chance to be the most threatening Spider-Man villain ever, given that he's the only Spider-Man villain to have ever won an Oscar and his power-set makes him the most powerful of any character in the franchise. Instead, he actually gets defeated too easily after merely two encounters with Spider-Man, losing to water in one and to overcharge in the second (and wouldn't that also classify as murder?) I find it odd how a normal guy with metal arms on his back seems more threatening than a guy who cause a city-wide power-outage and is basically a human lightning rod. It feels the same as how a normal guy wearing make-up and a purple suit with "a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets" feels more threatening than guys who are highly trained in martial arts and have a clan that existed for centuries that shaped world history that held a city in terror with panic-inducing toxins in their water supply and a nuclear bomb.

I was thinking of putting it in there but I was going long with the honorable mentions so I cut it. It was a good film and in some ways better than the first Raimi one. I liked it ok. Overall, I thought it was unneccessary. They didn't need to do the origin story again so soon. They could have cut to the chase and had more time with the other characters. My major complaint was the same with the previous movies in that he kept taking his mask off! Stop doing that! His biggest thing is keeping his identity a secret and yet he takes his mask off every 5 seconds for no reason.

The thing with American Pie (the original) was that it was throwback to the teen sex comedies from the 80s like Porky's and School Spirit. Just gross out humor, dick and fart jokes, and a smattering of very pretty girls in various stages of undress. I've always had a soft spot for the genre. They do have a lot of heart mixed in but unfortunately much of that does get overshadowed by the bros who think nothing beyond Stiffler. Cabin in the Woods is well worth your time.

Dude with the exception of a few flicks, your taste in film is so, so similar to mine.... And for what you said about the dark knight rises is just great, I don't get why everyone hates that movie!!! And I agree and I'm gonna just say it, people can attack me if they want but, the dark knight is one of the greatest movies of all time!! Heath ledgers joker is untouchable.... But if I am honest, I tend to watch the dark knight rises the most!! Aside of the joker, I am just more entertained with TDKR.... I've never heard anything good about Silent Revelations. What is it that drew you to this film?

Mosbergshotgun I'm a big fan of the games and loved the first movie so I figured I would give it a shot. It was an ok film. I'm not saying it is great or anything, just that it gets more hate than it deserves. If it was a movie on its own that didn't have any ties to the games or the original film it probably wouldn't be so chastised

How people keep on praising Sinister so much is something I don't understand. I agree with everything, but imo, a good horror movie needs some disturbing images. Not jump scares. And I (really, personal taste) got none of that from Sinister. Absolutely none. And seemingly, the movie in part builds on this through those revelations on these movie reels. And I got none from that. So it got really boring and disappointing, as well as that the villain did nothing for me visually. I guess this would have been a more satisfying book for me.

+GoodBadFlicks Jesus man, after watching most of your “Exploring” videos, I’ve watched all of your Best/Worst, and I’ve never seen someone who has nearly identical movie taste as me, but you do. It’s been the same for everything, aside from what I haven’t seen, & some of the ordering in these Best/Worst. It’s fucking crazy. And you make excellent videos! It’s awesome to see a critic on KZbin that doesn’t say everything he dislikes is garbage & that if we disagree w/you, we are entitled to our own opinions, but we’re wrong. That shit boils my ass like nobody’s business. And since we have such similar tastes, I’m using these videos as a guide on what to watch, that I haven’t seen yet. I only wish these lists went back to the 70s, as I’m sure some great lesser known movies have slipped thru the cracks over the decades. Especially the 70s, as I was born in 1983, & I missed some good shit I could be catching up on.

Thank you! I've been doing a bunch of 70s films lately so while I most likely won't be doing a best of for the years in the 70s, I'm still bringing attention to some forgotten films. :)

Not to mention the facehugger/giant squid was the result of the black goo from xfiles being ingested in the guy who then mated with noomi rapace, then she gave birth to the mutant facehugger. Defiantly not how the aliens were formed that we all know and love. Black goo in this movie seems to make anything into a weird creature like the worm the killed the dumb guy who thought it was domesticated.

Dredd really needs a sequel, can we set up a production company and buy the rights, not only did this work but seeing it in 3Dredd blew my mind, Dredd2: Judges, the law doesn't judge you, dredd does! In 3dreddscope , because killing creeps needs a judges perspective . Karl urban ruled! As did all the cast, it was like watching the orginal robocop or evil dead or playing GTA for the first time, perps

I wasn't really a fan of the Dredd remake, granted that might be because I'm not familiar with the source material. To me, the movie got to the point where it felt like violence for the sake of violence. By the climax with the main villain (I'm trying to be vague in case people haven't seen it yet) there had been so much violence that, aside from it being a cool camera shot, I didn't care about it.

Yes, Dredd was actually a surprisingly good film. I'm on the fence on Django though. "Hey, we have to make this film over two hours long or it will never be epic- even if story wise it could have ended twenty minutes ago!!" Jamie Fox was good in a film that just dragged on for far too long......I wouldn't bother watching it a second time and that means it couldn't be a top movie.

I actually enjoyed the Total Recall re-make - BUUUUUUUUUUUUT, I have since read the short story its based on and have to agree that overall, its lifted way too much from the original film and very little from the story... Which is really a shame as a direct repro of the book would be AMAZING! Another movie that cannot bear up to the story its based on is THE RUNNING MAN... Great film, do not get me wrong, but if they ever tried to do the book properly... Yeah! Impossible!!! Unless they did it over 5 or 6 movies or as a Mini Series... The book is way more intense, more blood thirsty, and frankly far more dangerous than the sterile game arena of the film. Recommend the book to anyone, especially if you like Diary format like Adrian Mole or Bridget Jones with a real Sci-Fi edge.

yeah, the directing was the films weakest link. have been meaning to check out Morgan's two films. I liked the love letter aspect of Cabin, I just wish the ending had been a little better, like the whole sacrifice to the gods being a sick eleaborate game on weaver's part sure thing; I'm in the process of tightening up the editing. once its done I'll send you a link

Battleship isn't too bad in my book. Yes the acting is mixed and it doesn't quite replicate the Michael Bay style as much as it wants to (it would be funny if it was satirized a bit) but the action and special effects were some good fun.

You put Silent Hill Revelations on the 'like' list and you thought you were going to get slack for Prometheus? You want to talk about steaming piles of shit? 'Revelations', when you don't know what else to call a movie.

Sorry you didn't like it but I thought it did a great job of pointing out what a lot of people are feeling now. No, they aren't (and shouldn't) go on a murderous rampage but that is the extreme element that infuses the black comedy. It is about the decline of common courtesy and decency in general. People have become rude self centered assholes and I think at least a portion of that is because of reality tv.
