The original is completely devoid of any 'woke' issues, being thematic but placed is some random place with jewels and treasures, has cute little boxes to hide the accumulated score of a player until the end, and adorable character names that wink to Clue. Incan Treasure: you are looting historical artifacts from a known civilization and you have nowhere to to hide your loot, so the press your luck game becomes meaningless around round 3-4/5. I'd have included Descent: Journeys in the Dark. The first edition was a behemoth on the table, but it was tons of fun. Then they made a second edition and tried to 'streamline' the game by leaving a lot of the game out, changing the way pretty much everything worked, and making it a campaign game from the get-go instead of individual quests meant to be played over an evening. THEN they had to go and make a THIRD version, which they renamed to "Legends of the Dark" because they made it so that you need an app to play and without it you have just a giant box of components that you can't do anything with.

I would argue with the 7 wonders entry. Yes, it may be frustrating for the owners of the original that they are making the new expansions compatible only with the 2nd edition but the 2nd edition actually made improvements. The icons are more obvious, the building cards can be kept in front of you with only their colored headline visible (it contains all the information relevant for the rest of the game), and the wonders are more balanced. I think it was a neccessary improvement.

I find myself being drawn to games that have some character. Because of that, it keeps feeling like I'm have to go to older games to find it, like the original Santiago, you know the African version. Great video, it will definitely upset some publishers, but hopefully, they're humble enough to think about it. Thanks as always.

Had the original 1986 Fireball Island growing up, lost it, then nostalgically reacquired a few years ago. It's still a blast and we break it out here and there because it's simple but chaotic. Got the new one and then sold it shortly after...all they needed to do was maybe make the island bigger (keep the same classic paths) add more unpredictable routes for the fireballs, maybe more bridges/traps...not added complexity, tokens and card crap. Completely removed the fun factor!

I was gifted a copy of the new Castles of Burgundy. It was from an unexpected friend and it means the world to me because of that. It's also my favorite game. That being said: I still have my 1st edition copy because the one thing that most gamers haven't tired of, but I have is BIG BOX SYNDROME. They whine about the size on their shelves but for me...the REAL problem is the ability to take it with you, the amount of set up and the amount of space it takes on a table. CoB, again, is my favorite game but I do face hesitation when picking it and I'd almost never throw it in my game bag to take somewhere over the other copy. My goal to saying all this is that it's not all sunshine and roses with these big box deluxe versions and I've never wanted to be someone who glosses over the negatives of even things I love. :D Also...for Spartacus...I also have the full game and I highly suggest keeping an eye out for the deluxe version of a game called "Flow of History" people will sell it for cheap and it has the PERFECT small metal coins that are thick like Roman coins would have been. I bought the wooden LaserOx insert and outer wooden box so I'm safe for hopefully my lifetime and have stored the extras. My BSG core box isn't Mint but the Exodus box is near mint. That said I suspect my BSG core box may be better off than yours but I would wait until I receive a nice Awaken Realms packaging box and re-use it to ship these off to you. Their packaging is beyond ridiculously good. I guess if anyone local in your area has been storing these empty BSG related boxes it may make more sense for them to pitch in before someone tries to toss these across the seas your way. Just to be clear, this is just an offer to help you with empty boxes and storage inserts not the actual game material. That said you might appreciate doubling the shelf life of your BSG box. Of course if you follow my footsteps and get the LaserOx box...you would be in the same boat I am in. Sorry I tossed Pegasus and Daybreak. Others in my boat may have kept all 4 boxes for display. I'm guessing quite a few people may be out there with extra BSG boxes as a result of Broken Token and LaserOx storage.

8:00 Matagot redid their own logo just like Kemet recently too and made it worse. It was so different I didn’t even realize that it was the same company at first!

Fully agreed with all of these choices, tbh. In particular the comment about people who pay 200+ for a 15 quid game.

I would go with Fury of Dracula. The last meaningful edition was the Second Edition. After that 3rd and 4th were a waste of time. The colour pallete of the later editions was absolutely rank. 2nd Edition was peak FOD. Also. Planet Steam. The first edition by Ludo Art was a fantastic beast of a game allegedly modelled on the old PC game MULE. Fantasy Flight got hold of it and turned it into a tiny box of wank completely devoid of the joyous excess of the original.

"Cthulu sucks..." ??? LOL Time to invest in a LIBRARY CARD, Mate! It's time.

I think I understand his point. Cthulhu doesn't suck but it is currently so massively overused as a theme in board games that I now roll my eyes every time another new Cthulhu board game is released.

@@wbeytel Nosssir! That is not what he said. He said, yes, it is overused AND he said it "sucks", broadly. Harry Potter sucks. Yep. I said it! But...Cthulu??? How dare he! I demand satisfaction!

So what about good 2nd editions / 2nd iterations? Here's a couple to start Restoration games did a super job on Thunder Road Vendetta (BGB's video on the original showed how dire and dated it was, the new version a LOT more fun). I've not played Voyages of Marco Polo, but really like Marco Polo II.

100% agree with you on the BSG reprint of Unfathomable. It may be a faster game, but I have ZERO interest in the Cthulhu theme.

That is a neat idea for a Top 10, and I think you made a pretty good list. I think the only one I really disagree with you on is Castles of Burgundy. The original edition looked like total dog crap and actively detracted from the game (and the "anniversary" one wasn't much better). It was also hard to play because all the beige art on the buildings looked the same and it was hard to remember what did what. The new "all-in" edition with all minis and everything is absurd and over the top, way more than I would want. However, the regular Special Edition looks great and feels great to play. Additionally, the new edition comes with all the expansions already baked in, while the original did not. So your $15 game becomes more like $30-$40 by the time you hunt down the expansions. And the newest expansion is only available in the Special Edition, so even then you don't have all the same gameplay. I would happily pay $100 for a game that looks and feels great to play over $40 for a game that looks and feels like some crappy Print-n-Play prototype. When you combine that with actual quality-of-life improvements like text on the back of buildings and monastery tiles, it's a slam dunk. I'm actually to the point where I would refuse to play an older version of Castles of Burgundy and would just rather play something else instead if the original is the only option.

I do agree to the Kemet Blood and sand edition. Fortunately I did get hold of a copy of the first edition for 20$, and it is much better looking in almost all respects. You did miss out on one of the worst reprints "ever". Everdell Complete Edition. I heard that they did release a new expansion after that one so it should be called "EVERDELL THE ALMOST COMPLETE EDITION". 😂 And with a price tag of "only" some 350$ !!!??? WTF.

Age of Innovation is Terra Mystica with a built in expansion. If one does not own Terra Mystica then they should get Age of Innovation. Gaia Project is different enough you could justify having it and TM or AoI but it’s also not that different either that it’s a hard sell to say it is

3:54 It also removed the 2-player game with the 3rd dummy player, as a way to play the game - due to how unpopular it was by most... Therefore, you can no longer play the game with 2 players at all. 😞

I think Kemet got worse with the art, but better with the balance. They also improved the consistency of the iconography (even though it mostly got uglier). Also, you got it wrong about the minis, they're bigger. Unfortunately, the map isn't really scaled to fit them as bigger, so in cities (with the pyramids) they barely fit. The game also incorporated the Ta-Seti tiles, and some of the rules that were unique to that box. It didn't incorporate the Path board though. B&S is basically like buying Kemet + Ta-Seti. B&S is both better and worse, which does make it a bad second edition. It seems like when Matagot pivoted to crowdfunding, they basically shit the bed. They're just not putting out quality that justifies the price tag for these products.

While i do agree on the Castles of Burgundy megadelux ks edition i do not agree on the Castles of Burgundy 20th anniversary edition, which i own, and was a very welcomed reprint with a graphic restyling and some expansions of the original game at a fair cost. That was (and is) a way for some people - me included - of getting a very good classic game which wasnt available otherwise
@anomaloushost48658 ай бұрын
Space Hulk didn't need a 2nd edition. Everybody who knows about the differences between 1st and 2nd edition agrees. Then they went and made a 3rd/4th edition, which is better than 2nd, but still not as good as 1st. Although those map tiles and blip counters are fantastic, even if they warp too easily.

The reworking of Tribune was horrendous that I traded for an older copy before they all fleeted away. In my opinion the Kickstarter didn’t do huge numbers because the art looked so bad comparatively to the original.
