My favorite book of the year was "The Last Cuentista." I was really looking forward to it as I haven't read many dystopian novels, with "1984," "Brave New World," and "Fahrenheit 451" all being books I want to read but haven't gotten around to yet. "The Last Cuentista" really offered a different take on the dangers of authoritarianism than what I was expecting, so I really liked that a lot. Also, the protagonist was extremely well thought out and is one of the best protagonists from any work of fiction that I've read, which was really cool. Finally, the whole story just has a lot of personality, spunk, and heart, which are things that really make the difference for me. My honorable mention is "Lonesome Dove," which I found to be very, very good. Although not quite as extraordinary as I was expecting, it was definitely worth reading and was very enjoyable. As someone who has traditionally relied heavily on reviews posted on Amazon to decide what to buy next, this has been my first year following BookTube channels and paying attention to their recommendations, and I'm glad that I have. It has definitely yielded dividends for me thus far.

Loving the comic book style action words! I feel like I'm kid again, racing home to watch the Adam West Batman re-runs lol. Dandelion Wine was my 2024 BOTY. I know I mentioned in on the discord as a wish list sequel, but I'm seriously considering taking a swing at it. It's going to be a ways off while I work on my craft, but man it has been sitting with me since I said it. I can't imagine writing something like that right now, but hopefully some day I can. Definitely a life goal though! Anyway, awesome list! Can't wait to get to the rest of them!

1:35 - I'm the same way! If I don't like the ending in a series, I'll unhaul all the books because it ruins any re-reading I could do of the earlier entries (I know in the back of my mind where it's going and will be disappointed again). I don't understand people who say "it's the journey that matters, not the destination" - like if I'm trying to get to the hospital, I'll be pretty upset if I end up in the fireworks factory instead 🤣🤣

I completely understand your issue with later books in a series doing damage to the series as a whole. It happened three times to me in 2024, with William Kent Krueger's "Cork O'Conner" series (book 15, Manitou Canyon), Michael McGarrity's "Kevin Kerney" series (book 13, Residue), and John Conroe's "The Demon Accords" series (book 18, Blood Cull). In each case, the book was bad enough that it infuriated me. In each case, I was really liking the series and the choices the author made felt like a betrayal of the series's ethos and tone. I do recommend all of the series up until that point. Best books (by genre, loosely construed) for me this year: Suspense The Rock Hole (Red River Mysteries #1), Reavis Z. Wortham First Frost (Walt Longmire #20), Craig Johnson Stone Cross (Arliss Cutter #2), Marc Cameron Fantasy The Wizard's Butler, Nathan Lowell Exile's Honor, Mercedes Lackey College Arcane (Demon Accords #8), John Conroe (I didn't remove this because book 18 sucked, but I thought about it) A group award for the Penric & Desdemona novellas, by Lois McMaster Bujold, which are all very good to excellent. SF The Iron Prince (Warformed: Stormweaver #1), Bryce O'Conner A Call to Arms (Manticore Ascendant #2), David Weber & Timothy Zahn What Price Victory (Worlds of Honor anthology series #7), David Weber, et al. Vanguard (Codename: Freedom #4), Apollos Thorne And a special award for the first 4 Murderbot novellas treated as a group. The first three are individually rather weak, but the fourth novella completes a story arc that is just excellent and together they tell a complete story that is very affecting. Sports LitRPG (really) Player Manager (Player Manager #1), Ted Steel 325 novels, 9 anthologies, 1 non-fiction, 17 standalone novellas read Average rating: 3.53

@@AndrewsWizardlyReads I have liked every Nathan Lowell book I've read, and I think I've read them all at this point. That said, they're mostly pretty low-stakes plots and largely rely on their character work (and world design, for the SF books). They do not run to thrill-a-minute narratives. 8-) I hope you like his work as much as I do, but he's definitely not for everyone.
