Who Loves Fishing at Buoy 10 or Fall Salmon Fishing? 🙋‍♂🎣🛥

We didn't fish Buoy 10 last year or this year. Last two trips there for a number of days the boat operation has gotten really dangerous. Every day we had people full throttle cutting right in the middle of people trolling. Plenty of room to go around. I contacted Oregon Marine Board and wanted to know if anything is being done about the dangerous boat operation of people at Buoy 10. I got a reply that a lot of warnings were wrote and a number of tickets. We never seen one Sheriff's boat every trip I realize it is a big area and they can't be everywhere. The Marine Board guy claimed majority of people operate their boats in a safe manner. Obviously the guy has never been at Buoy 10 and dealt with careless boat operators. Hear of accidents every year some very serious so it should get more focus to make it safe for everyone and remove the dangerous boat opeators.

We fished with Cody Herman some years ago for Springers out of Gleason Boat Launch. Three Springers hooked two landed both hatchery. The third fish the guy was really trying to yard in the fish and pulling up in the air, high sticking. The fish was getting close to the boat and Cody was ready with the net. The Springer came straight up out of the water and this guy still pulling really hard up on the fish. The hook popped out and a 16 oz lead ball went right for Cody's head. Cody was quick to drop down out of the way and missed other clients in the boat. That would of knocked Cody out or worse. Could of ended up really bad. We have gone on a number of guide trips and with our own boat. Clients on a guided trip aren't always safe around others. Most people are pretty good but others don't listen to the guide. One trip we had a guy running all over the boat practically running over the other clients. Four guys were up on the bow and told the guy we can't go any farther back off. The guide kept telling the guy to stay in one spot but he never listened. It was crazy. We went on a guide trip and a client was a chain smoker and a bit of an odd ball. I should of said something but most of the time the smoke was being blown away from us not at us.

Years ago my wife and I were at Tigard Fisherman's Marine. Seen some new flashers by BYO with a big what looked like buzz bait spinner in middle of the flasher. I thought another gimmick. Sales guy told me he has used them and they work. He selected two of the flashers a green and chartruese and a black with green and UV. We fished lower Willamette for Spring Chinook and trolled for a while. I tried the BYO Green and Chartruese nothing. Finally I tied on the black flasher and we were using green Label cut plug Herring. Hooked a Springer, then another one and another one. My wife caught a wild fish on chartruese and green Fish Flash with Herring. I bought more of those black BYO flashers and we hooked Springers just about every trip with them. I tried a Shortbus 360 flasher with spinner in black with green and UV similar to the BYO it worked. Now I'm noticing a lot of guides and people using the black 360 flashers. I was told the black works better on cloudy days and I also did well under a bridge in the shadow of the bridge with the black.

Be safe, two boats have already gone down on the Bar in July, with deadly consequences. We always avoid the Bar in general around tide changes, it becomes unpredictable, and conditions can change in the blink of an eye.

Tides are important. We were down around the Checker Board on Oregon side. Hundreds of boats around us. Got a nice Coho right as we move into area and started our troll. Trolling along I told my wife we need to reel up and run back up and then troll through again. To our surprise majority of all those boats gone. Why didn't we notice everyone leaving? We had to deal with scary bottom swells. Gun and cut back throttle. Did that for a while dropping into big holes. Passed a guy that was all by himself looked really scared and was doing nothing to leave area. We made it out of that area and what a relief. I didn't realize the tide was about to change when it did. The tide books aren't always real accurate but close. We totally did not notice the bottom swells behind us till we decided to go back up river. Lesson be alert and watch what is going on around you.

Do you take your boat out that we see on KZbin or go through a guide?

Both! I do like going with a guide at Buoy 10 to take a bunch of friends.

Are these fishermen reeling in fish, or cranking their boat onto the trailer. Cracks me up watching people on KZbin fight fish - obviously they've never been taught how to do it. It's pretty simple: pull up to gain line with the fishing rod, then gather the line with the reel. With a little practice it's easy to do and keep a bend in your rod the whole time. Shame on the guides for not teaching their clients how to reel in fish.
