Why is Secretariat, one of the most well-known racehorses of all time, below California Chrome? I'm going to go with Phar Lap from this list. None of these other horses came from an historical context that made them as meaningful to the public as Bobby was. Racing has had a lot of champions, but there are very few who were needed as much as Phar Lap was during the era during which they were racing. Phar Lap was a freak of a horse whose life, career, and performances brought hope and happiness to the people of Australia and also New Zealand during a Depression that destroyed the lives of millions. He is etched into the psyche and identity of both of these nations, not just for racing fans, but the general public as well. This, as much as his ability, is what makes him so very special.

He actually won several races handily that year where the competition was exceptional. The Breeders Cup where he won against some exceptional 4 yrs olds including his own stable mate comes to mind. @@captainamericaamerica8090 I got the race name wrong. Whatever. Riva ridge was horse of the year as a 3 year old. Won the Kentucky derby and the rest of the field in that race was packed with top notch 4 year olds + the time was scintillating ... Big Red won going away by 4 lengths against what many observers rate as one of the strongest fields in a single race ever. Big Red is the greatest. Period. Much like Ali ... The fact immaturity as a 2 year old, laziness, poor jockeying, and illness cost him a few races only places the great performances in stark relief and makes for a more compelling story. Red's Belmont should take your breath away and being tears to your eyes if you are a true horse racing fan. It's that perfect.
