If you want to hear chord progression in Phrygian listen to Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Pop for Lydian listen to math rock and Japanese rock. Mixolydian is a staple in Classic Rock. Great video, I learned a few new chord progressions for Dorian.

Great video, thank you a lot! Also for Lydian you could have mentioned an "Eight Days A Week" chord progression: I - II - IV - I

I guess I shouldn't be surprised Locrian wasn't covered, given how notoriously unstable it's been described to be. However, as someone who wrote & uploaded a piece in Locrian, I've found that a i7(b5) - bvii7 works pretty well for the piece I made.

Yes I left Locrian out here for simplicity. I made a video about it if you haven't seen it before 👉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6qWYY2NgcuEmZY

Great Video. Have you considered making videos demonstrating the use of longer progressions.

Thanks! I usually keep progressions short to make them easier to fit on screen and to cover more per video. But I am considering doing some videos about a single progression each that would work well with longer progressions.

Merci for this, even though it's out of my pay grade. I'm dipping my big toe in for modes, as I play my major and minor scales, I play on each degree of the scale if I have the time. I'm not yet playing the chords of the modes, but that'll be the next step. I don't have my ear trained well enough to recognize consistently what the sounds are, so I don't want to overwhelm the brain. No music theory for 65 years and then jumping onto the piano has been a great journey, but I see the importance of building a good foundation first.

I've just stumbled onto this on my own by transposing "Minuett No.1 in C" from the "Notenbuch for Maria Anna "Nannerl" Mozart" into all the Modes starting with Mixolydian, then Dorian, then Aeolian, etc. in the same Key. But when I decided to "Concentrate" all the Modes starting only on C, I found that the Modes followed the progression of Flats in the key signature. C Ionian: no flats; C Mixolydian (key of F) one flat: Bb!; C Dorian (key of Bb) 2 flats: Bb & Eb!; C Aeolian (key of Eb) 3 flats: Bb, Eb, & Ab! etc. etc. etc. So, what I ended up with was a tune that introduced all the "Blue Notes" in Jazz one by one: Mixolydian /m7/; Dorian:/m7 & m3/; Aeolian: /m7, m3 & m6/; Phrygian:/m7, m3, m6 & b9/; Locrian: /m7, m3, m6, b9, b5/. It blew me away! The fact that a minor 7th sounds just as minor as a minor 3rd had been lost on me because minor 3 is introduced first and sort of overpowers the minor sound of a minor 7th. I discovered that Harmonic minor comes from Aeolian by raising the m7 to Maj. And so, suppose that Melodic Minor comes from Dorian, rather than the parallel Minor, by the same process: raising the 7 from minor to Major. Now that was just a primer, but your presentation is a Virtual Master Class. Why this was not taught in any of the Universities I attended while trying to obtain a Degree in Music is mind-boggling. Thanks ever so Much. Jack

If you are going to use the bVII chord in the Dorian mode, it's often best to add the major 7th extension to that chord. This can reduce the risk of losing the Dorian sound and unintentionally replacing it with its relative Ionian sound. Why? Because if you look at the bVII chord in Dorian, you'll see it's the Ionian chord. *BUT* the major 7th note of that chord is also the same note that defines the Dorian mode, which is the natural 6. Great video

Thanks for the videos man you rockkkk beginner here, could you tell me if i am getting it wrong please ? Example : lydian A B A B does that imply the key is E major/ A lydian ? (E F'G'ABC'D'E) and we are playing 4 - 5 - 4 -5 can't wait for insights :)

You could be in A Lydian playing I - II, or in E major playing IV - V. Without some more information to determine the key, such as other chords that feature or what notes the melody is using, I would say this is A Lydian because it uses the I chord.

Unfortunately, you’re doing what everybody does. You say this is an example of a Dorian progression, but nobody seems to explain WHY it’s a Dorian progression… this is the Modal explanation I’m looking for.
