The UK has a long history of producing classic comedy, and sitcoms have been popular with audiences for over 50 years. For this list, we'll be counting down the greatest classic sitcoms ever made in Britain. To be in contention, the show must have started before the year 2000. Expect to see Only Fools and Horses, Father Ted, Dad's Army, Are You Being Served? Porridge, Blackadder, Yes Minister, Steptoe and Son, Bottom and Fawlty Towers. From hotels to council flats and three wheel vans, we have it all covered.

Yeah, I noticed that certain shows, Monty Python, The Young Ones, Benny Hill, etc, weren't in here, but then I realized that they would be considered sketch comedy or, in the case of the Young Ones, a variety show. But Red Dwarf not being on here is a bit perplexing, thinking about it now.

My favourite classic comedy shows are Don't Wait Up, That's My Boy, Home To Roost, A Fine Romance, George And Mildred, Man About The House, In Sickness and In Health, Open All Hours, The Likely Lads, Only When I Laugh, To The Manor Born, The Good Life, 3 Up 2 Down, Robin's Nest, Mind Your Language, On The Buses, Butterflies, Love Thy Neighbour , Terry and June, Sorry, Last Of The Summer Wine, The Young Ones, Hi De Hi, You Rang M'lord, Oh Doctor Beeching, Surgical Spirit, No Place Like Home, Ever Decreasing Circles, Citizen Smith, Men Behaving Badly, The Vicar of Dibley, Absolutely Fabulous, Fresh Fields, The Liver Birds and many more that are classic comedies that deserve to be reshown on British Television instead of the crude reality shows that are never-ending!

2 shows I found recently which, in my opinion, are severely underrated are; The Thin Blue Line (cop sitcom with Rowan Atkinson) and Mind Your Language (english class sitcom with Barry Evans) You can find every episode on youtube if you look hard enough. I highly recommend them to those of us who appreciate intelligent, witty humour.

Definitely agree. I think David Jason was knighted especially for this. Love the running jokes like uncle Albert's "during the war". Watch an episode of it if you are down or depressed and you instantly cheer up

Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, Father Ted and One Foot in the Grave are the ones I absolutely love. I've also seen Blackadder but don't really revisit it as much as those previous shows I mentioned. As for the others I haven't seen much of them so I can't really judge them as grand comedies. I've also love Keeping Up Appearances, Mr Bean and Vicar of Dibley.

Yay, "Are You Being Served?" made the list!!!! That show was only the second British comedic show I ever watched (the first being "Monty Python's Flying Circus") and I have been a huge fan of it ever since. I used to stay up late on Sunday nights throughout middle and high school to watch it, "As Time Goes By", "Goodnight Sweetheart", "May to December", "One Foot in the Grave", "Blackadder", "Fawlty Towers", and the other shows my local PBS (public broadcasting) station would air, and I adore Mr. Humphries, Miss Brahms, Captain Peacock, and Mrs. Slocombe to this day. That final scene of "Blackadder" made me cry, BTW, and my experiences with staying at a London hotel last December made me realize how "Fawlty Towers" was less of a sitcom and more of a documentary, LOL. Also, that "Steptoe and Son" sounds a lot like a hilarious show we had here in America called "Sanford and Son", starring the legendary Redd Foxx. Oh, and as for the rest of the shows: which ones would y'all recommend I try?

My grandfather used to/still does watch these. I remember when I was a kid, he always had one of these on. Sometimes it was blackadder, sometimes it was only fools, sometimes it was dad's army, sometimes fawlty towers or last of the summer wine... I never understood them as a kid but now I'm older I must say, he had great taste. I think many of us can thank our fathers and grandfathers for introducing us to stuff like this. It's important that they get passed on to the younger generations, us brits have always been the best at comedy and you can see that just by looking at this list.

I love classic comedy. I get a lot more laughs out of Only Fools And Horses and Dad's Army than Peep Show or Benidorm. I find it such a shame that there isn't too many modern comedies that are like classic ones. There should be more things like Count Arthur Strong and Still Game. 👍🏻
