Judgement at Nuremburg is an incredible film. I saw it in a German history class back in the late 70's. We did have a few laughs that were indicative of our age group, not the film. A couple of the secondary characters were funny to us. The aide to Spencer Tracy was played by William Shatner and his rank was captain. The housekeeper was the woman who played Mrs. Olsen in the Folger coffee commercials, and one of the Nazi's on trial was played by Werner Klemperer who was commandant of the German POW camp in Hogan's Heroes. First time he appeared on screen we all cried out "Klink!"

I don't know if it was because he was blacklisted, but Elia Kazan is often overlooked on lists like this or a similar nature. He made a career of making films concerning difficult topics: Gentleman's Agreement, Baby Doll, On The Waterfront. Splendor in the Grass

Elia was blacklisted because he dared criticise Soviet apologists.
@marilynsobel7414

Elia Kazan wasn't blacklisted; just the opposite. Instead of bravely refusing to name names, he named plenty of them. It was his friends who were blacklisted because of his testimony. They were the ones who lost their careers. He deserves to be ignored, after ruining so many people's lives. People like Zero Mostel and Dalton Trumbo refused to name names and suffered as a result.

I know you folks tend to focus on American/Hollywood-based films for lists like this, but I think that Fritz Lang's early German-language procedural thriller M not even receiving an honorable mention is a crime. It is a film that not only tackles some very tricky questions regarding social responsibility, moral finger-pointing, and even when mental illness crosses with criminal justice, but it purposefully does not give a definitive resolution to what the right answer is. It's be nice to see more foreign films also get some attention.

They are the top 10 Hollywood films, but I agree we would benefit for giving more consideration to the great non-American films. M is a disturbing and wonderful classic and Peter Lorre gives an incredible performance. Grand Illusion is a terrific anti-war film and Umberto D. is unusual in dealing with the subject of the loneliness of those who are old and poor.

It wasn't panned. It was praised (the most celebrated film critic of the time, James Agee, called it "one of the most efficient sentimental pieces since A Christmas Carol"), even nominated for best picture at the Oscars. But it was a box office failure and was almost forgotten compared to Capra's earlier successes. After 25 years it came into the public domain (meaning anyone could show it without having to pay the original producers), so in the early 1970's TV stations began playing it, usually at Christmastime. Before long it became everybody's favorite movie.

I discovered West Side Story, To Kill A Mockingbird and It’s A Wonderful Life as a high school student. But putting Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner as an honorable mention is a shame. With each of these four classics, I didn’t know what was in store or why they’ve remained so beloved years later.
@marilynsobel7414

One of the problems with the way "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" treated interracial marriage is that Sidney Poitier's character is this ultra-perfect guy working for the World Health Organization saving lives, etc. It seemed to imply it was acceptable to marry a black man if he was truly elite. The producers did this on purpose to forestall racist objections, but I think most people today feel that by making his character so unrealistic (no faults), they didn't do much to diminish prejudice.

One old Hollywood film I would love to include for the sake of this list is Sullivan's Travels because in that film, it touches upon some of the realistic aspects of what it's like to work in the film industry during the 1940's. At the time when some film directors or actors were growing desperate to pursue their own ambitions, despite the demands of other filmmakers to produce other projects, besides the ones they want to do next.
@Missinyellow

I feel like the bit on Wonderful Life misses an important part of the film's message: George has the opportunity to get ahead multiple times, but the catch is he'd have to take it at the expense of his community. And every time, he can't do it, because at his core he wants to help people - so he keeps putting his own dreams and ambitions on hold to keep pulling the community back from the edge of collapse, until he finally can't take it anymore and has a breakdown. THAT'S when he goes to jump off a bridge. And the community repays him for all the sacrifices he's made at the end of the film by coming together for HIM this time. It's not that he's stymied by fate despite his best efforts. He CAN have the things he wants, he just can't have them without stepping on other people to get there, and that's what he keeps steadfastly refusing to do.

I watched Guess Who is Coming to Dinner the other day. Save for Spencer Tracy, it leaves me kind of cold. PATHS OF GLORY made the French army look bad; it's hard to find a Hollywood movie doing the same for US Armed Services, but you might try the UK co-production MAN IN THE MIDDLE, with American and British establishments try to brush away a racist psychopath find a home in the US Army till he does a murder in plain sight. you missed OF MICE AND MEN, THE GRAPES OF WRATH, CROSSFIRE, INTRUDER IN THE DUST, NO WAY OUT (1950), OUTRAGE (1950), BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK,

Joey says she's progressive yet it is she who insist it is not a problem extra meat nd prepare additional portions with less than 3 hours for the meal that was planned, add extra place settings while she goes out to visit friends; offering no help. Joey also believes Tillie and she were friends ever since she was a child. Her tone is also condescending.

In Westside Story & Imitation of Life white actors were casted as people of color. In some ways things have truly changed and in others we still have so far to go.

Sarah Jane in “Imitation of Life” is not biracial. Other films I’d add to this list include “A Town Without Pity” and “Network.”

I was looking for someone to make this comment. Sarah Jane is not mixed race. It’s indicated in the movie that her daddy was very light skinned, and she took after him.

Charlie Chaplin also said about the movie that he made The Great Dictator that had he known just what was going on in Germany and specifically the final solution the mass extermination I'm more than 10 million people in total Jews Gypsies the handicapped the politically incorrect Etc he would not have made this movie we look now back at it as a great movie as a masterpiece, the irony is he was ashamed of it.
