In 1951 my folks moved our family from Northeastern Kansas to Pilot Rock Oregon which is in the northeast corner by Pendleton. My Dad was a "cat" skinner on a wheat ranch the first season. He pulled a model ??? john deere combine on those steep hills and talked about sliding straight sideways on the slick straw. Great video. The first combine I ever ran was Dad's 55 model John Deere in 1961

When I was a kid I got excited when heard my uncle bringing his massey Harris 90 down the road to our farm so that my dad could combine his oats. I was a little guy who could crawl inside to grease the straw walkers among all the 102 grease czerks. No sealed bearings back then. Later on my dad quit picking his corn and a neighbor who had a gleaner (quite an investment back then) custom harvested our corn. Still like seeing Lawrence Bernard's 78 model Gleaner still doing the job over on This Farm Wife KZbin. Soybean Farmer still uses his John Deere 3300 which I saw on your channel as having an original price tag of $16000 back then, a price even my dad could have afforded for a combine.

My dad moved back to the farm in 1963 and rented a 900 acre farm. He harvested the crop (corn, beans and wheat) with a brand new JD 45, He was the only farmer in our part of east central Illinois who had a self propelled combine it wasn't long before he moved up to a 95EB then eventually a massive 105!!

MY dad started farming in the 1950s His first tractor was an electric start diesel 730 John Deere he farmed cotton rice and beans his first combine was a JD 95 b and he was growing medium grain rice which is higher yielding than long grain... he had a storm come through and the rice crop lodged he had one field of 40 scres rice it took him 45 days to cut... of course he did not have grain cart nor did they have variable speed pickup reels and only had 1 truck to haul to the elevator...the rice was cutting about 130 bushel green... He had to haul the rice about 30 miles about 1 load a day was all that he could do...95b had a raspbar threshing cylinder not as efficient as a spiked tooth cylinder for rice...Rice when the grain and heads mature the stalks are still green it makes it tough....

I spent many hours driving a '69 JD 55 Corn Special that looked just like the 55 EB shown plus a straw chopper. It had a 95 engine and could combine beans faster than that one with a 15 ft head.We had it until 3200 hours. For my dad's 80th birthday I bought a Precision scale model which came without a cab. Had custom toy builders add the cab and tank extension and extra lights so it was just like ours. Dad went to a toy show in town and they were there with a second one asking $750 for it. He told them he was the guy who got the first one, said he better go home and increase his insurance coverage on it! Probably should have just kept the real one, but the next owner used it for some years yet. Now I run a 780.
