What made Cash's version of Hurt so powerful and memorable that it makes multiple top ten lists is the undeniable fact he took the same song with the same lyrics and changed the complete meaning of the song. The original was about drug addiction and depression, but Cash's version was about a man, at the end of his life, looking at all he accomplished and realizing all his worldly possessions and achievements mean nothing. It's a song of regret and teaching at the end of a memorable life. It rips the soul. Everyone thought Cash was done, he was old and retired and no one expected him to come back and certainly not in such a huge way.

i don´t know where you get that but it´s about love not returned ,the drugs were there but not in the words and johnny cash was in deep need of money when several not mainstream artists hepled him to returrn due to it´s importance in the music scene since the 50´s but forgotten and not just retired ,off course the first move to make him return to record music was when U2 wrotte a great song so he could sing at his own style and if you never notice that just listen to the words

Although the lyrics give that impression, it wasn’t exactly a comeback. That album was certainly his biggest since the mid-70s, but he’d never really stopped having hits into the early 80s. They’re just less iconic ones like Blue Eyes, Song for Guy and Little Jeannie.

well, sevearl were more like two songs that made them again top sellers but nothimng else and in my personal opinion they could grab the 90´s train playing some old songs and new with the same style that caught the attention of the world ,so i think they were more like transformed in one hit wonder band having a lot of followers since their early years , i couldn´t believe my self when i saw for the first time the video "what about love" they looked like a bon jovi mixed with poison look a like when for themselves had a look that caught the attention of lot´s of followers around the world, so several ?2 songs at the time of their new appearance ,don´t know if it was imposed at the time because of van halen´s lead singer david lee roth way of dressing himself acording to his atitude when having a lot of international success in the first two lp´s, not only as in 1984 ,the now censored cover of their biggest sell lp at the time

@@HistoryRepeatingTMU well i only knew two hit songs , what about love and alone, these dreams was a single but not number 1 , i do like heart but even recentelly they turn again to their classic sound, wich they were known by having good LP´s but that 80´s fashion look it was far from what they were and are, i like 70´s or late 60´s rock bands that some are being released again .The other day a younger friend went to my house to show me the record he had bought , it was the credence clearwater revival ,cosmo´s factory, this shows that today´s youth it´s still enjoying old rock bands, he told me that he was atracted by the way they played. In my opinion that´s why i enjoy listening every CCR LP, they sound as a band playing anywhere ,clean sound no extra efects on studio recordings ,they sound plain and simple but with great songs, when younger i even thought some musics were covers but later i learned that the ones i thought were the originals were in reality the covers ,this shows how good were their songs, and still today john fogerty already old plays with his recent band the songs to a great level of perfection about not wanting to reunite CCR ,it´s a personal matter ,his brother is already gone so no CCR , Heart could have made a 80´s project under a new name and after playing as Heart ,it´s like a stain in their career .

They're dead wrong on AC/DC. The band was pretty big through the 70's, and never missed a beat when Bon Scott died in 1980. Back in Black was a HUGE album. Probably their most memorable. For Those About to Rock in '81 was another huge album and commercial hit, the first to go number one in the charts. The next couple albums might not have been as big, but they were far from failures. They never stopped filling up coliseums.

@davidcleary9510
@davidcleary9510 3 жыл бұрын
@@Isnt-it-Lovely There is a lot more to it than that. The members came to Australia with their families when they were children. They completed most of their education here, including musical education. They all met here and this is where their band was created. Their music, style and tastes all formed here. More than that, they cut their teeth on the Sydney and Melbourne pub circuits. This further honed their sound and style and is how they gained their local following. They were signed by the Australian record label, J Albert and Sons, and their first album was originally only released in Australia. Now, look at another Australian band, The Easybeats. Malcolm and Angus Young's older brother, George, was a founding member. Of the five members of the band, two were born in England, one in Scotland and the other two were Dutch. Saying such a band is English, British or Dutch is clearly wrong as it basically leaves out the origins of the other members. The only way to describe them is as "Australian" because this is where they met, formed and stylised their band.

That's why June initially begged him not to release it. Johnny said he had to, he felt he must. He did the music video and had her in it. She's crying for real. She'd had a premonition that she'd go into the hospital and that's where she'd die. The night before her recording on the stairs, she found out she had to go back in for her health. She was terrified of what would happen to him with her gone. That's real fear in and of love in her eyes. She never left it, dying a few weeks later. Johnny then followed her several months after that, when the fears she had - that he couldn't go on with her - were realized.

To me, One of the biggest "come-backs" of all time was that of Tina Turner w/ "What's Love Got To Do With It?" That album became an instant classic, and the tracks sound just as fresh today - as they did when the album first debuted.

Before Cash's cover of Hurt, U2/Bono wrote The Wanderer with him in mind. It was included in U2's Zooropa album. It was written that this was the song that gave Cash the confidence to return, as the record industry had turned it back on him. His daughter stated this song and collaboration with U2 thrilled hime that younger artists were so interested in him, and felt reinvigorated and connected with music again. This paved the way for him to open up to the suggestions and ideas from Rick Rubin.

The fact that he died so quickly after the song (even though it was written by Trent, it explained Johnny's life from Johnny's eyes, which drove it home) another real honorable mention is Roy Orbison "You got it" right after it was released he also died before seeing it become a hit.

Covid 19 took my dad through hell and back...he spent 6 months on a vent...he has since gotten out of the hospital 2 months ago and trying recover...he had a bad bedsore from wake that is healing but his lungs are bad and he needs oxygen 24 /7 right now, but hopefully not forever and can't walk without a walker and only for short distances...but we are all praying he makes a complete comeback...we know the road is long but he went from completely independent working from sun up to sun down to know dependent...I teared up while listening to this song a few minutes ago and went and hugged my dad who is 68 that he still has another 20 years easy...he is in his own words "blessed" to be alive!

What about Tina Turner? When she divorced Ike, his lawyers pretty much destroyed her. She got nothing in the divorce settlement except debts to both her record label and the IRS. In the late 70s, she released three solo albums that all bombed. She was singing in small clubs for pennies and occasionally getting a guest appearance on the Sonny and Cher show. Her career was pretty much dead. Then she released Private Dancer.

"Get Lucky" was hardly a comeback song. Daft Punk were popular all over again in 2010 thanks to their composition of the Tron Legacy soundtrack/score. "Get Lucky" came in 2013.

RHCP only an honorable mention? Really? After BSSM in 1991 and the departure of Frusciante, their next album, which is now considered a great underrated album and featuring Frusciante's replacement Dave Navarro, was not well received as it was a vast departure from that funk rock band that came to fruition earlier in the decade. Fast forward 4 years after One Hot Minute, they came roaring back, with a sober Frusciante and a completely new sound, with Californication which came to be their most successful album to date. Scartissue, Otherside, Californication and Around the World became staples of their new sound and direction and they've been the most recognizable and consistant rock act for the next 20 years after that. So, I say again, how is that an honorable mention? I agree that Cash should be #1 tho, but the Chili Peppers should have been at least in the top 3.

Buckley doing Hallelujah is one of my most favorite covers ever! Right up there with this one, Hurt by Johnny Cash. They both make me cry. Also, Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence is not one of my favorite covers. I think they went really niche with it and it is overdone and doesn't pay homage to Simon and Garfunkel at all.
