Every country , big or small, in this competition has the same number of participants. So it is irrevelent to judge the performance of a country, by the size of its population.
@anonymous-zt5jq
@anonymous-zt5jq 3 жыл бұрын
You can't just simply divide medals on population, you'll get number that means nothing. Because each country can't send all people they want - both 1bln China and 7mln Bulgaria can send only 6 schoolchildren at the contest. And talent has a gaussian distribution, so having 2 times more population doesn't mean that the most clever children will be 2 times "cleverer".

@@balazs1456 that's the whole point of a country, every country doesn't have the same population and that's what makes them different. a smaller country would have the right amount of resources to serve it's students better. and as i said before, having more people doesn't mean that there will be more smarter people, it could actually become worse because of a large population and lesser resources. to compare more fairly (per capita), bigger countries should be allowed to send ore participants and that would give a more accurate ratio of who is "smarter". Take taiwan for example.

@@balazs1456 India's population is nearly as large as China's but India either avoids International Science Olympiads entirely or fares relatively poorly in them. South Asia's students are focused on preparation for their Higher Secondary Certificate exam, which is given around the time that the International Science Olympiads are held. Additionally they have much more unevenly developed and inequitable school systems than China and other Sinosphere nations, and South Korea and Japan. The top students at NYC's merit based elite high schools are over 80% Asian, including both South Asian and East Asian Americans. They have largely displaced the Ashkenazim at these schools.

Indeed, it is impressive. But still, the participants in the olympiads are all the same, it doesn't matter how small or how large the country is, for every olympiad, each country can only send a single team with a few participants, so it also doesn't mean that populous country can send more.

Every time when China leads the competition, jealous people just be like “oh, what about per capita”. Remember that no matter if you have 1 billion population or 1 million population, you fight for limited gold medals. Also remember that each country only have that much resource to cultivate the talents based on your comprehensive national power, no matter your population. That’s why India is not on the list. What matters in this game is the national education level, comprehensive national power, education input, average IQ etc.
