This one may have been changed, but I believe that it was technically legal to hang someone for stealing a horse in Texas until quite recently. A horse thief was about the worst thing you could be in the old West. It could mean someone was left stranded without supplies in the middle of nowhere. Also, a horse with all its gear and the contents of the saddlebags was a significant amount of value that people would have to leave just standing around in the open much of the time. Strict laws and respect for others' property were all that kept people from just waltzing off with the majority of a man's wealth and worldly possesions while he was in the store buying coffee.
@elizabethturner89365 жыл бұрын
While living in Twentynine Palms, California, I had a friend who would ride his horse to a local bar (pub) where there was a hitch rail at the side of the building. He would drink until he was nearly unconscious, at that time the bartender would get him on his horse and tie the reins around the saddle horn and send the horse off in the direction of home. The horse walked home and my friends wife would get him into 5he house, then go out to put the horse in it’s corral after removing saddle and bridle.

Don Troutman-Actually, ambergris, which is still used a bit in perfume, comes from the digestive tract, and because It’s not water soluble, can occasionally wash up on shore when a whale dies at sea. The precious commodity in the head is spermaceti, which the whale may use as a sonar receiver, and from which whale oil is extracted. The spermaceti organ is not in the brain, however, but on top of the “snout” outside the brain case.

Fireman: "Ma'am, your house is on fire, I'm here to rescue you." Woman: "Wait while I change out of my nightgown, then you can rescue me. "

Some strange ones here, in NJ. They're not enforced, but they still exist on the books: 1. In the state of New Jersey it's illegal to frown at a cop. (and in Bernards Township it's illegal to frown at all) 2. It's illegal to slurp your soup in public places. (I... I just don't know. No clue.) 3. It's illegal for birds to shit on statues. (BIRDS, just birds, not squirrels or raccoons, but if you have wings you better find toilet) 4. It's illegal for a man to knit during fishing season. (I go fishing and even I think that's a little hardline) 5. (my personal favorite) It's illegal to wear a bulletproof vest while committing a murder. (apparently the crime of murder and the crime of murder while wearing body armor are mutually exclusive)

In Canada we've got the hilariously impossible combination of laws in our national parks where it is illegal to leave your horse loose (it must be tied up), and it is also illegal to tie your horse to anything other than a hitching post. There are few-to-none of those in most national parks. Also it's illegal to challenge anyone to a duel, so all those kids playing Pokemon back in the day were breaking the law. In other news, as far as I know it's still illegal in Toronto to drag a dead horse down Younge Street on a Sunday. The other days of the week are fine, though...

Well, here in Australia theres a turntable of hours, laws, and drunks. Darwin had 24-hour pubs till 1994 and then decided to act a bit more responsible and brought in a closing time of 3 in the morning so patrons could get home before the sun got up.

In Arizona (US), it is illegal to refuse a person a glass of water. This actually makes a lot of sense, considering that there are areas where the temperature stays over 100 degrees F (38 degrees C) for more than 100 days in a row, often with 0% humidity. But some silly laws with interesting histories are: - It is a felony to commit a misdemeanor while wearing a red mask. - Hunting camels is prohibited. - Donkeys cannot sleep in bathtubs. - It is illegal to manufacture imitation cocaine. - One may be sentenced to 25 years in prison for cutting down a saquaro cactus.

In the US it is illegal to ride a horse drunk. It will be treated just like any other DUI. In some states, they will also charge the drunken rider with animal cruelty.

In the State of Virginia in the US, we have some really strange laws that are still on the books. Some of them include: 1. Virginians cannot hunt animals on Sundays, except for raccoons. Raccoons can be hunted until 2:00 a.m. 2. In the city of Norfolk it is illegal to spit on seagulls. 3. In Richmond, Virginia, citizens cannot flip a coin in a dining establishment to see who gets to pay for coffee. 4. In many counties, no one may be a professional fortuneteller, and if one wishes to pursue the practice as an amateur, it must be practiced in a school or church. 5. You may not engage in business on Sundays, with the exception of almost every industry. (By far the best law ever) 6. There is a state law prohibiting “corrupt practices of bribery by any person other than candidates." 7. In Virginia Beach it is unlawful to drive by the same place within 30 minutes on Atlantic Avenue. We're a weird bunch here in Virginia.

Here in Texas we still have a few old laws. You may still be hunted for stealing a horse. It is against the law to refuse a person water on your property. Yet many restaurants do.

I remember reading a historical novel set in the UK (I don't remember for sure, but it might've been Scotland) that began with a whale washed up on a beach. The kids were playing on top; the chief/leader/king (again, I don't remember) came to take possession of it. I think it's because it's a crazy huge amount of meat, as well as valuable oil.
