Top 10 Crops To Plant Mid To Late Summer - For Fall Harvests

There Is Plenty Of Time Left To Garden! Don't put away your gardening tools just yet as right now is when we should be planting our fall favorites. It may not seem like it, but there's distinct advantages to getting certain crops into the ground this late in the season.
Today, I'll list those advantages for you. As well, I've singled out my top 10 list of vegetables to plant in the late summer. If we're smart about our plant choices and our timing is right, we can set ourselves up for a fall harvest that rivals even the best summer ones.

Thank you so much for your willingness to take time to answer my question! Actually, it’s for my father. He has problems germinating carrots every year! He lives in Grande Prairie, AB. He’s used to growing conditions in NFLD and BC for the past 40 years, so I think he’s struggling with the climate (as it was exceptionally hot Spring 30+C), and the earth is a very solid clay (muck as my niece calls it😉). Both he and my brother work on it together. They have great compost, rain barrels, a small Green House for the more tender, heat loving plants. Basically, the garden is my DAD’s retirement patch/hobby and most definitely his pride and JOY…that is…except for his patchy carrots! I hope all is well with you! ENJOYING your summer! The garden never winds down

THANK YOU…for another reminder to plant MORE lettuce…and good old reliable spinach! I ned kilos of it to freeze, so I make Veggie Lasagnas for my family and friends, as well as, many for the Elderly folks in my building, and plenty for the Soup Kitchen, and to go into soups for our Homeless population! Oh, how I wish I had land to grown enough food for those struggling and Homeless! I give most of my crops to the local children, as I’m single and live alone, so I cook/bake when I’m going through treatment, as I find GARDENING, unbelievably HEALING and uplifting in so many ways! Since I only have a small area, it is heavy packed/multi-sown with “Old Faithfuls”, yet I’m more adventurous, and like to plant different fruits/veg using trellises, due to limited space…whereby, allowing me to try vines like Kiwi, dwarf peaches, using Raspberry bushes as “Privacy hedge” bushes! HOWEVER…I have 1 dire question: My father has had very little success with his CARROTS this year! Few germinated both times he/planted!🫣. The QStack time, I believe it was too hot due to the 30+ weather in MAY , and a second crop in June where temps were around 18-27C. He lives in a grande Prairie, AB (Zone 4). Finally - I’m desperately trying to convince my parents to keep their BRASSICAS in the ground after several frosts, light snow, as the Rutabagas get sweeter with each frost…and I find it to be Nature’s effective/efficient ROOT CELLARS! Coming from Newfoundland, I remember the Root Cellars as a child, and they remain active still to this day…with each Extended Family having access to the largest collective one belonging to several families, but since visiting again, our family dug and built NEW individual Root Cellars for individual Nuclear families…lots of FUN for children, and a huge money saver, and cultural way of life! It’s great to see younger people wanted to embraced a wholesome life, as we have! I’m still picking my own berries - Old Habits die hard - Besides, you get to eat your weight in berries along the way - LOL!😂 I wish you a fantastic week! You are one amazing person feeding all the people you managdd we to reach. Sadly here in the uk most people do know what it is to have forest food- the homeless people especially and people needing help. Most of what they know comes in packs is what I found helping at the local drop in. Even if it’s carrots they believe they come in packages don’t truly understand where it originated from- the ground. I’m not saying they are stupid but just so set in the way things have been for so long. Sadly. I’m 33 and most my age and 10/15 ???? Years either side are the same. So used to going to a shop and getting what they want. But things needs to change one way or another. I just don’t know where to start. Other then at home with me and hopefully my family.

​@@cherylhowker1792 Hi Cheryl - Those we’re exceptionally kind words from you…THANK YOU so much!😊 Truly, I do it, because there are so man6 in need, and I would rather help and do with less money in my own pocket, than ignoring the massive problem of homelessness, and live in a bubble of my own making…ignoring all the suffering that happens before us, but most CHOOSE to ignore and look away, as it makes them “uncomfortable”! Such acts take the “humane” out of “humanity”, when one can ignore the BASIC necessities fundamental for life to exist! To THRIVE is another matter, as is financial wealth and freedom…although…there are many financially wealthy or “free” individuals, whom find themselves anything but FREE! As for yourself ~ it’s wonderful and encouraging to hear that YOUR generation, along with others, are search ping for meaning and purpose…returning to Nature…a desire to find where our food comes from, and many other beneficial subjects are getting “air time”, thanks to the internet [Which can be both a benefit, and a curse, as we both know !😉] I am older than you by a few years. But, it’s ALL due to my parents and the culture from where I was born that contributes to how I live my life! I was born in Newfoundland, an island separated and alone for many generations. Because of its isolation, the people relied upon themselves, their communities, families, and churches, as there was only occasional trading and purchasing of goods that opened any interaction with foreigners - including the colonialists on Canada’s Eastern most territories, prior to confederation - thus making them provinces. Newfoundland did NOT vote to become a province of Canada, until 1949! Both myself and my brothers were born long after confederation (Newfoundland, a dominion at that time, became Canada’s last territory to become a province…although…we still have 3 territories - the Northwest Territories, common the Yukon, Inuvik…well known for the extraordinary sightings and eagerly sought after…NORTHERN LIGHTS…which are commonly seen throughout much of Canada, so it’s not as much of a big deal, but still appreciated in all its wonder and glory!🌟 Newfoundland, due to its isolation, and pride in our cultural identity (All cultures have their individual uniqueness that make them distinct.), provided the ideal circumstances for leading to my growing interest in all things Nature, Beauty, Faith, Food, Customs, and constant learning! In Newfoundland, most every family/individual is self sufficient, although I suspect the younger generation - Gen X - is far less so, due to a number of factors, but mainly contributed solely via the internet/multimedia. I played video games/computer games on occasion, but my parents limited it to 3 hours per week…whereas…that is likely the bare minimum a young person plays per day in our modern society. Personally, this saddens me, as I grew up like most Newfoundlanders, and even many Canadians hunted, fished, grew a massive garden, or gardens in my family’s case …flowers were a separate luxury my Mom tended - lol😉). My father’s family also grew their own wheat, barley, rye, corn and other grains. We learned to preserve everything…canned, bottled, dried, salted…making us and others self-sufficient, providing food security for a couple of years - in case there was a year or 2 of lean times. BERRY PICKING…My absolute favourite past time, hobby, meditation, fun…all rolled up into ONE…is berry picking by myself…or better yet…with my family, whereby, we turn it into a fabulous time Many of my ZJOYFUL memories occurred on berry picking excursions, and “boil ups” on the beach! A good cup of coffee (tea on The Island) made from water collected at a local Brooke, set on a rack warming, as my Grandfather (now my Dad and brother) returned with bucketfuls of mussels, scallops, clams, oysters crabs, lobsters, and for the less Squamish at heart “wrinkles”/snails and seaweed. Then, my grandmother would clean all the seafood on the beach, in the ocean, after which, my grandfather would gather up about 20 litres of fresh, cold sea water and put it on the open fire until input came to a rapid boil, at which point, he would add all the seafoid, and a few extra items, and occasionally salt pork/salt meat. Basically, my parents always had a garden, still do, and my brothers and I have our own garden, still enjoy berry picking and making so much jams, jellies, pickles, tomato sauces Roasted Salsa (I’m making now, as my tomatoes, peppers, basil, herbs all ripen). It’s my favourite salsa, which I give to everyone, along with homemade Tortillia chips. Great way to let someone know they are special, or welcome them to the neighbourhood, church, etc. I also ENJOY baking immensely! I don’t eat it, but find baking a tremendous STRESS RELIEVER! I learned this back when studying for exams. I would reward 2 hours of study with an hour of baking - LOL!🙃 CRAZY - I know…but…I could have worse stress relief practices…whereas…this helps everyone from the Homeless, Girl Guides, different organizations, etc. The charity, person, animal matters not! From giving - we offer something higher and more substantial than a mere meal! Whether it’s volunteering at a soup kitchen, baking a cake or a few cookies/biscuits, buying a warm cup of coffee and San which to go with a warm pair of socks for the person you’ve noticed shivering in the cold winter temperatures! We can all contribute, and our ability and means by which we do changes over time. I could go on and on, but being only 33, I’m sure you have more exciting and pressing things vying for your attention! CHEERS to you, my Commonwealth friend from across the Pond!🇨🇦☺🇬🇧 P.S. Have you ever visited Canada or have family here? If not ~ I hope you consider at least 1 visit. It’s a vast country with endless beauty and Nature. I think you would like it and fit in well, considering YOU kind, compassionate, heart!💫 Oh yeah - are you a Football fan? I’ve been following the Women’s English team, since Canada lost in semi-finals a little over a week ago! Now, I’m cheering for England and the Aussies, as of late! Since we were eliminated, perhaps England or a Commonwealth team will win the World Cup!

@@shelleyhender8537 tbh I had to read a few time and read some out loud to my mum as I have autism and don’t always understand. Even simple stuff lol. It’s good to grow and do what we can for each other. I personally wish each community would live like we used to after the war etc , like you did as kids but we don’t. Due to my disabilities I don’t work and a lot of volunteering places have turned me away- as I get in there way and’scare’ people- I also have seizures. So even tho I have carers whenever I leave the house to do stuff as well as to keep house good and cook etc trying to help others when they won’t except me for who I am is a nonstarter sadly. But myself and the chap next door have a good relationship and live like you should, helping each other and supporting each other, we even have 3 Labradors that are sisters between us. I got my girl first and made friends with the breeder. We kept in touch for over 18 months. And when her family had problems we took in the dogs she hadn’t sold or they were going to a rescue/ be put down. I couldn’t see that happen so we took them in. I still have my girl who is my support dog. And he has her sister and then the 2 older girls we have one that sleeps in either house depending what’s happening and I managed to rehome one to a friend of a friend. And she’s happy there. If we didn’t have the relationship we do we wouldn’t have been able to save 3 beautiful girls. And seen as they are 2&3 year old now- had them a year now 368 days tone exact lol 😂 But we are one big family. And it’s lovely. Any how I must go sleep as 2 sleeping dogs are snoring at me and making me tired. Thanks for telling me so much about your life past and present. It’s rare for me to talk about anything to anyone I don’t know. So thanks 🙏 Night x

I would add coriander to the list. Also beetroot does need some day length otherwise they end up biennial and they may grow through the first season not producing a crop then going straight to seed the following season.

The bounty is only just starting here in Ontario now. CUCUMBERS! LOL I'm loving the sandwiches and giving many away to neighbours. Beans and peas did OK, and second plantings of each are just sprouting. Tomatoes are all still green, but there's going to be a LARGE harvest! As soon as the vegetation dies off (it's still green!) I expect a good result from my potatoes. Thanks for the video! I'll sow a few more carrots and see what happens!

@@kbjerke glad your beans did well. Planted about 30 seeds in spring. 3 survived the slugs. Replanted and a few more survived. Finally did the diatomaceous earth. Still picking off the slugs then. Did slug bait and replanted. Now I have lots of plants but the flowers are either dropping off because of the heat or the cucumber beetles and other bugs are eating them. Yesterday ate 4 beans in my soup🙄, and today there are 4 more ready to be picked . So we're building another bed and next year growing them in the beds with trellises and joined together with another trellis at the top .. We don't have Cattle panels 😩. Lots of squash, cucumbers, carrots two beets 🥺. And tons of lettuce 👍

@@wendyburston3132 Hi Wendy. I also put put egg shells around my beans and peas etc to stop the slugs. Works well. They don't like the sharp edges and the shells give nutrients to the plants. DE is great for many things but doesn't seem to deter the slugs much like it does certain insects.

Definitely garden fatigue here. Summer tomatoes just coming through. Onions growing like crazy - Beets fabulous - Carrots so so but a litany of disasters No Strawberries. Blueberries bad despite my use of elemental sulphur(Potted - maybe I should put them in the ground) Apples so so too but blackberries galore! And the plums :) The clock is ticking. It's nearly Garlic planting time AGAIN!!!! :)

Problem with these kind of videos, you must be zone specific. What to plant in zone 5 you cant do in zone 9, I live in Florida and there is no way to start tomatoes right now.
