..because orchids don't all grow upright in nature like we keep them in pots, so water doesn't pool. They also don't get rained on with tap water, they're also in the breeze at all times and the rain forest in not as 'sterile' as our living rooms. These are just very few things that makes livingrooms alien habitats for orchids, incorporate temperature, humidity, bacterial climate, etc., so it's easy to see why things just don't work the same. Hence why we get crown rot and maybe the ones in nature not as often. I think I anticipated your top question right? 😜 ps: for rotting issues advice, when it will happen, just type in the search bar 'missorchidgirl orchid rot' and you'll find some more videos on it. Rot is the No. 1 ailment in cultivation, so you're highly likely to deal with it at some point. Good luck! Also just reminding you that in the description you will find additional links related to today's video and also links to my Orchid Care for Beginners series, Care Tutorials for Phalaenopsis, Cattleyas, Oncidiums, etc., links to products I use & more! I receive so many comments and messages daily on all my platforms, it is impossible for me to get to all, but I try to link videos on the most common questions in the descriptions of my videos. You can also search for answers on almost ALL orchid related topics by typing in the KZbin search bar 'missorchidgirl' followed by the orchid subject you want to learn more about! I have many many videos and I think you'll find a video from me on the subject, just in case I don't get to answer your comment. Thank you! 😘🧡

It's no surprise that orchid growers refer to their plants as 'chids. In their own unique way, orchids are as complex as we are. They, like us, are at the top of the evolutionary stack. Growing most orchids IS simple, and the hardest part is knowing what NOT to do. BTW, welcome to the best addiction on Earth. You'll do fine.

My grandmother had a window full of orchids that bloomed 3-4 times per year. Her main advice? Don't fuss! Honestly, just give the pots a soak every two weeks and they'll be happy enough. Listen to all the clever advice from more knowledgable people, but also just... Don't be scared! If you hydrate them every two weeks the plants will live. And happy plants may just bloom for you. Several times per year. (But really: DO listen to clever advice when it comes to the potting mixture. Something that is free-draining but also moisture-retaining. That's what I've heard - and also what this video seems to be saying.)
@jensnow31933 жыл бұрын
@@CopenhagenDreaming how do you water them properly? She said don't water from above or inside the pot.... I'm so confused!!!
@CopenhagenDreaming3 жыл бұрын
@@jensnow3193 I water all my potted plants by simply letting them sit in the plastic pots in a few inches of water in the kitchen sink for 15-60 minutes (depending on when I remember to take them out again!). Then I let them drain for a bit before putting them back in their decorative pots. That way you get the soil and roots hydrated and you avoid standing water in the pots that might lead to rot. But watering in the pot is also okay, as long as you pour out any excess water after the plant and soil has soaked up whatever moisture it needs. (15-30 minutes should do it.)

I was given an orchid 6 years ago, I've repotted it once but it's in the original orchid mix it came in with a bit of compost on top. It flowers constantly for half the year then all the flowers drop and the cycle begins again - I water it when I remember. last year it developed a keiki which I've only just separated and repotted. It's a pretty bonkers plant! It seems to thrive when I don't fuss over it.

This is to add to what OrchidGirl said: If you don't know what to do with it, leave it alone. Water it when the roots look silver (no more green). For me it's every 2-3 weeks, for others it's every week, depending on your geographical location. You'll learn by observing it for a while. To water it put it under the sink facet for 30 seconds (or until roots turn green) and let the water evacuate completely before you put it back in its decorative pot. Alternatively, if you left it for weeks without water (yeah, it happens when people have a life) you can add water in the decorative pot until the brim and one hour or so later (no more than 24h though) evacuate it completely. Place it on a windowsill facing east or north, acceptable west if the sun is not strong (good if the light is filtered by a tree) but definitely not south. If all you have is a south windowsill put it 1-1,5 meters away from the window, on some furniture. If the leaves stay plump and green don't change its position until next year (where if they fail to rebloom in November they may need more light). Don't fertilize, mist (unless you enjoy unclean windows), change soil, chop anything except for the dried up spikes. Just leave it be. Advanced notions take time to master and are worthless, even detrimental, if you haven't learned how to water and where are the sweet spots for orchids in your house. I am a very busy person with an active life and plants are the last thing I worry about, though I like to have flowers nearby. Through trial and error I found the only plants I can actually keep are orchids of all types. Easiest maintenance ever for flowering plants, blooms last for 3 months and some start again on side spikes in the summer. I had one in continued bloom for 3 years until I forced her to rest by changing her place. The most difficult is to get the first to rebloom. Once that happens, congrats. You've learned the basics and figured out the most important thing: placement.

Great video! Very good that you brought up the "watering with ice" thing. As I'm sure you have already seen, there's a company that adopted this as a marketing strategy, and they have lots of videos claiming they should be watered with ice cubes. This idea seems to have come from interior decorators that insist on planting phals on large decorative pots without any drainage, and they sell those large, beautiful flower arrangements that are totally unsuitable for orchids, and the only way they came up to keep the orchid barely alive for some time is to add ice cubes on the top of the media. But this eventually will kill the orchid. The orchid will live just long enough for the customer to enjoy it while it flowers, at what point many people unfortunately throw them away and get a new one. It's unfortunate that they spread this disinformation around, because they reach many people who will believe them, because they speak confidently and pass an image of authority on the subject. Hopefully you will get through to a much larger audience. :)

Andrea Soilander I know, I would like to confront them about that but.. well there is no use, they are a large company. Anyway if you look on their website in the blog, people are asking why their orchids are dieing. They reply that they are not, they just go dormant, that is why the leaves are limpy.. pathetic.. anyway, this is why we content creators (read youtube orchid nerds) have a job right? lol
@andreasoilander54079 жыл бұрын
MissOrchidGirl Yes, I agree, it's a pathetic explanation! And they know quite well they are wrong and they're deceiving people. "Orchid nerds" is a great term! LOL! I love it! I am myself a big time orchid nerd and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I do a fairly extensive amount of reading in the subject, and I besides collecting orchids I also buy books and magazines on the subject, and I devour information from the internet. There are quite a few very good resources available, and forums, both international forums and my local orchid society's forum discussion forum, magazines and care sheets. Most people just want to buy a pretty orchid and later wonder why doesn't it bloom, and some think you must have a green thumb to cope with them, but actually the key is information and a lot of study. So in the end, to be a successful orchid grower one has to become an orchid nerd! :))

Exactly, I was referring to "just add ice" videos on KZbin they recommend this practice to water orchid since ice melts slowly allowing the bark media to soak in water, I wonder if this is a good practice especially if the ice is added on the bark away from the roots, thanks ☺
@MissOrchidGirl9 жыл бұрын
+Sleiman Houssam well, the choice belongs to each and every one, being that I am not an expert I can only advise you to chose the advice that sounds the most logical to you. From the collector and orchid grower's point of view tough here's my 2 cents: leaving aside cold damage, the ice thing will not work due to a series of factors. First would be that bark is not very water absorbent, if you place an ice on one side, it will only wet that side mostly. Second, water will fall down due to gravity and will remain at the bottom of the pot, creating a pool of water at the bottom while the top will dry pretty fast after the ice melts (considering the bark is fresh and not degraded, mushy and toxic). Sphagnum moss is the only used media that doesn't do this since it is very water absorbent, here's a demonstration kzbin.info/www/bejne/ane4paKZnKmDo7c so from the start the advice given by the just add ice experts is very inaccurate. Ofcourse not many people know this, once you get to grow different orchids and experiment with different medias you'll get the hang of it. But that matters less, the biggest con of ice is cold damage, but then again you never know until you try and you never learn until you kill a few orchids ;) we've all done it, no worries lol

Came on this site because my orchid stated to get wilted leaves and flowers started to fall off, just realised that I have pretty much done 9/10 things wrong. If I can't rescue it at least I learnt where I went wrong. Excellent video and priceless advice, thank you

I've learned with my moth orchid, she like it when I changed the orientation from vertical to horizontal facing my east facing window (a foot or two away) she's also pushing out 2 new leaves while dropping flowers (which I know is something that normally happens once the flowers are spent). She's currently in a clear vase with sphagnum moss to help keep her from falling in, I found a low NPK fertilizer targeted for orchids which seems to be working.

Thank you so much for this! I had just started watering my orchid with ice cubes because the site I read from said they had done a bunch of studies. but after watching your video I did more research and the only ones recommending you do that are the ones selling them! I want to give my girl the best care I can, and your videos have been immensely helpful. thank you!

This was very helpful. I was trying to find out how I can transfer my Orchid into a larger flower pot due to it growing literally out of its current pot, and what are some of the things I would need to do and how to care for it. I did not know that regular potting dirt would harm the plant. Thank you.

Remember that Catteleya with no roots I was telling you about? Well its growing roots now finally, but I was kind of sleepy when I was trimming away the rotted roots and I somehow managed to chop off a pseudo bulb 😨 at the moment it still has 4 pseudo bulbs left so it should be OK! There seems to be some confusion regarding some topics in this video. Regarding watering with ice: that is a selling point designed to make watering more appealing. But watering with ice is just like offering your pet ice instead of water. It will get the job done, but in a cruel, risky way. Also about leaving water in the crown, as in nature it rains. Orchids absolutely don't grow like we grow them in nature, they adapted to avoid water pools in the crown and leaves. I explain a lot more here kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGO3q2dmrJ6FmM0 You can also learn about orchids from an authority, such as the American Orchid Society, if my videos don't hit the mark www.aos.org/ In the end we all want to be good, responsible Orchid parents 😁

@Eve Mens Depends which one you have and what growing medium it grows in. Generally, if it's growing in a bark medium, fill larger container than the pot the orchid is already growing in, with lukewarm water (room temperature) and submerge about half way. Leave the orchid in for about 20 minutes. Take it out, drain it, place it back. If the orchid grows wrapped in moss, have look. If it's dry, do the same as above. How often? once a week for moss, twice a week if grown in bark medium. However, those are not carved in stone. It depends on climate/environment your orchid live. I live in cold area and have orchids in both mediums. I also feed all my orchids with a doze of very diluted orchid fertilizer solution once a week all year round while they soak in the sink. This works for me and my orchids. Good luck :-)

I tryed to grow orchids and I'm not having much luck.I get about three months out of them and then they go south.I only water them once a week with a 1/4 cup of water.don't know what to do next.l would like to buy another one but I keep losing them.

I have two orchid plants for over 3 years now. Still going strong and blooming beautifully. The only thing I ever did was put lukewarm water in the pot so the roots get soaked and leave it for 15-30 minutes. Then drain the pot completely leaving no water on the bottom. And it is good to go for 1-2 weeks. I also try to keep the air moisture up at least 50% on the hygrometer.

I think they're just regular clear plastic drinking cups that she's punctured with a hot awl. I've done this in the past by resting the steel of the awl on the stove element until hot. Melts around the hole you create for a 'soft feel' perimeter. I have a few from yard sales but a craft/specialty/leather or hardware store may have them for you.

Tong Koung Hi Tong, sure I will try to help :) well did you repot them? if you did, try to maintain the surface of the media more humid, this will help the roots grow. I am not sure what your set up is now, but keep them in bright shade, not direct sun. Also, do they have any new growths? so give me more details before we go on please.

MissOrchidGirl is tap water ok for my mini orchid? How much water (in teaspoons pls) should I put? Also I dont know what type exactly my orchid is. Its a mini modern looking orchid thats white and slightly violet. Also to I have to put bark and stuff in it cause I asked the florist and she said to leave it as it is. So like not repot it. Sorry im really new at this!
@oana11115 жыл бұрын
@@@hotlikeaparkedcar4601 By now you probably found out the answers. Just in case, if you don't know what to do with it, leave it alone. If the leaves stay plump and green don't change its position until next year (where if they fail to rebloom in November they may need more light) Don't fertilize, mist, change soil, chop anything except for the dried up spikes.
