These clips highlight the importance of good umping. Umpires, like everyone else, can make mistakes, but they can choose to defuse the situation by owning up to it. The handling of the Tiafoe net-incident was perfectly managed, as was the umpire giving Rune some friendly advice. The opposite led to Ymer losing his sh*t. Not defending his behavior at all, but it didn't need to come to that if the umpire had just checked the effing mark.

The Net rule is a complete nonsense. Doesn't have any common sense. Net is a net, it doesn't matter if you play singles or doubles. Either shorten the net / court for singles, or don't have this stupid rule. So you can't shoot balls threw there, because there is a net, but you can bump into the net and it doesn't count as a net, because they play singles? Thats just a bad rule. And I don't know what u talking about Umpires. Rune lost a point, because of an Umpires mistake. So what is gonna happen, if it is an important point and someone loses the match because of that? The match then shouldn't be valid. He lost the set because of that. Does the Umpire gets punished/fined, as Rune asked? No I think they don't. And its not fair. Thats why every match should have hawkey calling the shots, people are just unreliable and there is more then enough evidence in the past.

In our Aussie Rugby League, the refs get demoted to a lower grade competition if they perform poorly in the Professional grade. I say that if players in Tennis get 2 challenges per set, then lines people should be swapped if they make 2 wrong calls. There should be no shame associated with this because we all know we can have a bad day at work due to no fault of our own. Refs I’m sure do get together and review theirs and each other’s performances post match but the supervisors need to make it transparent to the public of any outcomes.

Refs have to be consistent. I totally believe it when Ymer says he has never seen a ref not check a mark when a player asks. Even when they are sure they still come down and just show it to the player. The rules probably don't specify that he should come down, but you have created an expectation with players when you always do it and that has to account for something. The ref says he cannot check it twice, then that he saw it good. That doesn't make sense. He won't check it. Perhaps his English is poor, but to sit in that chair you have to be able to express yourself properly in English. Seems like later he may have refered to Ymer not immediately stopping which is not a rule, it's a judgement call, which I think is very close here. At any rate, the umpire was all over the place here, made bad arguments and he could have avoided the whole thing by just checking the mark. Managing the situation is also part of refereing and he chose to boost his ego over his job, facilitating the game. Ymer's actions later on were inexcusable, but that's a seperate matter.

So, a doubles net is wider than a singles net by a bit over a metre on each side. In tournaments where the court doesn't have the fittings to put a specific singles net in, they'll use a doubles net and put little bits of wood called singles sticks in where the singles post should be to make the net cord hang like a single net. In that case, the rule is that the section from the singles stick to the net post doesn't count as a "net", but as a "permanent fixture" sort of like the walls and fences around the courts. That's important here because you're not allowed to touch the net during a point, but permanent fixtures are fine. Tiafoe touched the "permanent fixture" part of the net, which Murphy realised after he made the touch call and corrected himself, and since Tiafoe hit a clean winner that Raonic had no play on even if he wasn't distracted by Murphys call, he was awarded the point. Raonic didnt know that rule, and was convinced he should have been given the point due to the supposed net touch.
@MrLiverpoolfan4ever Жыл бұрын
Tiafoe hit a winner, but touched the net before the 2nd bounce. Usually this would mean he loses the point, however he only touched the portion of the net in the doubles alley so didn't lose the point. Aka, if the point was played on the Next Gen court the player could hit that shot without hitting the net, but almost every tournament has a longer net & court lines for doubles matches.

There were disputes with the same referee in several games. There is something wrong with this referee.

Come on ATP. After watching that absolute battle between Carlos and Nole, Ymer dismantling the umpire chair, I was almost afraid to watch the top 1 most dramatic moment of 2023. And then was just Norrie accidentally tagging Djokovic in the foot. Whoever did this video turn the most dramatic moments in tennis 2023, into the least dramatic video of the year.

The well-known referee Mohamed Lahyani has already made several serious mistakes in his career, including in the Novak vs. Holger match. Players are punished for inappropriate behavior, but when a referee makes a mistake, there are no consequences.
