As a Belgian I’ve always thought Fristi to be a cool name, as it resembles the Flemish/Dutch word Fris meaning chilled/cold, as well as the French word Fraise meaning Strawberry. It’s a chilled strawberry drinking yoghurt. It’s really a children’s drink; the flavour is meh.

It's a bit oldskool, but griesmeel (semolina) pudding with Haagsche bluf (a topping made of whisked egg whites with sugar and berry juice incorporated in it) is a typical Dutch desert to me,. that and vla-flip

Oh yes, Haagse bluf is really something Jovie should try. I'm sure she can find a recipe online. It's definitely unique, because you cannot buy it ready-made in a shop, and I don't recall to have ever seen it on a menu in a restaurant.

I do really miss the Appeltaart in this video, or the stoofperen. These things for me are typical Dutch. Probally aren't. But if you talk autumn/fall, which it's now. And even mention the hot chocolate milk. These things are basically, essential. A cup of hot chocolate with wipped cream, a piece of appeltaart with wipped cream. Is like something you can get at any place nowadays as just a snack for around 11 o clock, 4 o clock or as desert. And easy to made to. Stoofperen fits very well with meat from this season and/or stampot in my eyes.

Properly made hot chocolate (cocoa, heated milk and sugar) is indeed a treat, but if you order it at a cafe what you get is microwaved chocomel. A pet dislike of mine was koffiemelk which now seems to have almost disappeared now that people have learned to appreciate well-prepared coffee. In the 1970s people thought it odd when I asked for real milk or cream in my coffee "maar we hebben koffiemelk".

I live in the U.S. A Dutch friend through FB gave me the basics for hutspot. I love it. I made mine with orange carrots as I could not get winter carrots here. Nobody knew what that was at the local supermarket or farmers market. The grocer recommended small yellow potatoes called "Dutch Gold" which were not mentioned in the original recipe. But I went along. The onions were part of it to which I added butter, whole evalporated milk and nutmeg. This is not true to the original but I enjoyed it so much. I made it with vegetarian patties and vegan brown gravy. I'd love to get a simple recipe for Dutch appeltaart and try that when there's time.

Winter carrots are almost the same as regular orange carrots. The biggest difference is the size. Back in the day people want to harvest as much as they can from their garden, and in terms of pounds, the winter carrot was a good one compared to the normal one. So there is nothing wrong with using regular ones. For hutspot I believe it is 3 pounds of peeled potatoes, 1 pound of onions, and 1.5 pounds of carrots. A Dutch applepie isn't that hard, but we have to deal with apples and I don't know it the apples that we use are available in the USA.

I think the best Dutch dish is Jachtschotel (game dish or hunters dish) my mother always made after Christmas from the leftovers of deer, rabbit, hare, turkey, chicken or pheasant. Or a combination of whatever kind(s) of game we ate at Christmas. Fry some minced meat in a skillet, add some chopped bacon (katenspek) and a chopped onion (you could also add some vegetables like carrots, lentils or green beans). Season it to your own taste and mix it with the game leftovers. Put all the meat in an high oven dish with the fat/gravy from the skillet. Above the meat a layer of mashed potatoes (twice as thick as the layer of meat and game), above that a thin layer of bread-crumbs (paneermeel) put a few chunks of real butter on the bread-crumbs so it will get a gold-brown color in the oven. It is a delicious meal and easy to make, just 30 minutes in a pre-heated oven of 220 degrees Celsius. Eat it with (homemade) applesauce (appelmoes) or rhubarb sauce (rabarbermoes) and green salad.

I had guests from Colorado once and the girl was half-Korean and thus she and her boyfriend were into slightly more adventurous food. They loved haring, although admittedly I had served it on those mini-cracker-toastjes. Also, I had given them ample warnings ahead of time, like, it really is just raw fish and onions and it has a unique taste that not everyone digs. It turned out well, though. The cracker-toastjes makes a huge difference, because the flavor is less dominant that way. Note, on some birthdays and occasions, those toastjes are also served with smoked eel and other fishy ;) stuff.

Just go for the "paling-filet" to avoid the 'ew-this-looks-like-a-snake' reflex and try some on a cracker. If you crave an 'out of season' donut- substitute try a "Roombroodje" (a.k.a. puddingbroodje). Some candy? Spekjes. It's the dutch take on marshmellows. For meme-credits try a frikandellenbroodje

I eat stampot quite often around winter times. My favorite one is Stampot Rauwe Andijvie with spekkies. Seriously easy to make. Just cook some potatoes till they are soft. Then stamp them to they are mushy (milk and/or butter is adviced as it makes it easier to get a nice consistancy). Then add the andijvie (best is to use ones that are already cut to small pieces). And the basically sort of hamblokjes/spekjes you have to have baked already, add them to. Then add the special stampotkruiden, those are basically essnential if you wanna have some taste. And then, it's just wait to it's cooked and then it's time to serve. I rather eat it with chicken though, as those 2 feel better then a sausage for me. Also, if you have some left over, don't throw it away. But let it cool down to the next day, get a slice of bread, bake the stampot in a normal pan (not a cooking one) and put it on your bread. It's even tastier then. Then there is also stampot boerenkool. Which is also very tasty with a gehaktbal. Actually I rather eat it with a gehaktbal then with a sausage. But either one are fine. And then another one it's called hutspot. Which is best with slow cooked meat like draadjesvlees (like that's grandma's recipe basically). Stampot is such a dutch meal. And certainly in winter time it just fills you up in your belly, with warmth to. So happy it's on the list :D

I remember the grocer in the village I grew up selling vanillevla in glass bottles with tin foil caps in the 1970s. Very good stuff from the local dairies, better than the somewhat bitter artificially flavoured stuff coming out of the big factories these days.

I remember my mother making vanilla vla, it didn’t exist in bottles in that time 😉 And David, I used to do the sam thing. It’s the best way to eat chocolate sprinkles, because they stay where they are, and the flavour combination is so good.

Fristi is a yoghurt drink (not milk, they really taste differently) with the taste of strawberries, raspberries and cherries. Also a correction, haring (herring) is actually not sushi (on rice or in rice wrapped in nori: eatable seaweed), but more like sashimi (only fish).

The Olibollenkraam is called a "Krapfen" in Austria its filled witch marmalade and the dutch pancake is what we call "Platschinke" also traditionally filled with marmalade, and if you cut it in small strings and maybe add some herbs into the batter, we put it in soup, then it's called "Frittaten" that's how I like them best!

I LOVE oliebollen :P I love New Years Eve :P Back in the days my mom always bake them fresh on the day before 31 december so we had to days we could eat those things. Sadly she is no more, but luckily you can get oliebollen basically everywhere now with those kraampjes near supermarktets, in cities and so on. In Pijnacker is one of the best oliebollenkraam in the Netherlands. But for me almost all are good. I don't care if they are filled with raisins or not, I just want to eat them, off course with poedersuiker.

Fristi is not tea. It''s a drink yoghurt. So it's fruit-flaveroud dairy product. It's mostly served to childeren. That's why they also sold in machines. Because parrents want something to drink but dont want to give their child soda. Then the child often gets chocomel or fristi.

Bruine bonensoep, it is a bit like Erwtensoep, and the biggest difference is that the peas are replaced with bruine bonen (for people outside the Netherlands they are close related to Pinto beans). If you buyed the dried ones, put them in water the night before you make the soup. Another thing you have to add (if you're making the easy version) is to add some packages of 'Honig Engelse Ossenstaartsoep' (not the 'heldere', but the original version). Since you already made 'snert' this isn't difficult. Another one is 'draadjesvlees' which is a kind of beef stew.

The thing with fries here is the vast amount of condiments we use to dip them in. It starts with a simple "patatje met" with just mayonnaise, which by itself already puts a weird and disturbed look on folks from abroad. Specially Americans seem to get a gag reflex about it. Never will forget my family members' reaction in the States when I fancied some mayo for my fries... it's as if I asked for cocaine to sprinkle on top of them. Besides mayo you also can have your fries with plain ketchup, curry, pindasaus (peanut sauce). You can go for a "speciaal" which is mayo + curry or ketchup + onions. Or even a "patatje oorlog" (translates to "war fries") that comes with mayo, peanutsauce and onions. For the real degenerates among us there's the "patatje joppie", which I believe is mayo, ketchup, onions and curry powder mixed into a one funny looking yellow sauce. A kroket or frikandel on the side and you're good to go (hopefully to the nearest gym). So it's the sauces, and I guess also the size of the fries that really can make it a solid meal. If you ever go to McDonald's with a group of people from all over the world, the Dutchie (or Belgian) is the one jammin' 4,5 fries at once into whatever sauce there is available. It's because we're used to the big ones!

Yes, yes, yes.... I agree with not ruining perfection! Keep out the raisins and the krents. I like them natural or with banketbakkersroom. Thing is, when you get the small oliebollenstands at the Jumbo or similar, they rarely if not at all, have natural oliebollen for sale. Sometimes I ask if they can make a few fresh ones, and it's like the people in the stand see water burning. Ah well, there's always the really big stands.

Did you ever try Engelse drop? These are more sweet and has a less strong liquorice taste. Worth trying: Chocomel Dark, dark brown boxes, it has a stronger chocolate taste. And if you like fish: gerookte paling/smoked eel, gerookte makereel, mosselen. The original or traditional erwtensoep was made with slices of smoked bacon and pork ribs or pork knuckles. And the soup should be thick, that your spoon stands right up in the soup. Because most people nowadays want less fat in their food, you rarely find this traditional erwtensoep.

In the 1990's I was in Venlo for a month of meetings and training. I was eating dinner on a Sunday and seated across the room from me was a family with a son about 14 and a daughter about 18. They, and I, had some sort of creamed vegetable and from the looks of the daughter she didn't know what it was. She asked her Mum and I guess she didn't know either. Spotting me, she gave me a questioning look and I shrugged my shoulders in defeat as I did not know what it was either. No one knew what it was but it tasted good and I still wonder what it was many years later. Having served in the American Air Force I was used to strange things being served to me and just ate them, as food is food, unless it is wandering across your plate.
