Which makes absolute sense - if you're going to initiate nuclear war, you're going to try to take out everything in one go, immediately, before your enemy has a chance to launch against you. Petrov still should be recognized and revered, though, for being a clear-headed, intelligent and thinking man at a moment that others might have panicked.

vasili Arkhipov was one of three senior officers in a nuclear submarine during the Cuban missile crisis. Two of the three senior officers gave the command to launch a nuclear torpedo off the coast of Cuba but the authorization had to be from all three senior officers in the submarine. He was the direct person that stopped the nuclear strike and is a hero to the world.

Soviet submarines normally carried 2 senior officers and both had to authorise the use of nuclear weapons. Arkhipov's presence on the submarine and his senior rank meant that he also had to authorise a launch; which he refused to do.

Some fun facts : Asclepius : at 460,000 miles away, it was still almost _twice_ the distance of the moon (but in space terms, yes that's close) there have also been other Asteroids that have passed inside the moons' orbit (though smaller in size) CME : a corona mass ejection going a million miles per hour would take about 15 minutes from the earth to the moon, or 3 days and 52 minutes from the Sun to the Earth (that's pretty fast! 😃)

Asclepius is about 900 feet wide .. almost _14 times larger than Chelyabinsk_ ... So... I can only imagine how big an explosion of something that size would create...................

JFK don't save the world during the Cuban missile crisis although do not doubt his importance in it, Vasily Arkhipov he was the real hero of the crisis he was in charge of a damaged Soviet nuclear submarine and with the r radio damage they believe nuclear war had start and 2 of Senior officers gave the thumbs up to launch their nuclear missile but Vasily Arkhipov chose not to. The amount of radiation which reached western Europe was negligible while the impacted area of Ukraine subsequently saw its radiation levels decline far quicker than was anticipated as the local fallout was covered over by soil etc..

You want something even more depressing? The current number of people around the world that are tasked with watching space for any incoming objects - i.e. asteroids, comets, etc. - namely ones that may impact the planet...is fewer than the number of staff needed to operate a small McDonald's, and not even during rush periods. With that little detail, is it any wonder that we have these cosmic close calls where we get a week's warning at most - if these ever get noticed in the first place? One astronomer (I cannot remember his name - I only remember that a man said this) described every single meteor you ever see with your naked eye is the equivalent of a fired bullet scratching your cheek - a hair's difference, and you might have ended up dead instead - and that a meteor shower is you stepping out into the middle of an active shooting range with the shooters present still shooting while you are out there.

I've watched in other YT channel that in the middle of the Cuban missile crisis one bear put the U.S to almost launch the missiles by climbing a fence in one air force base. I don't remember well but everyone at the time thought that was a spy or some threat like that, and until they checked all the military was in high alert, ready for nuclear retaliation. I think that the relief they felt when they knew that was just a bear was marvelous

They should’ve mentioned Vasili Arkhipov who was the only officer on a soviet submarine that stopped a nuclear warhead launch during the cuban missile crisis. The submarine were in radio silence area and didn’t receive the Kremlin news about the treaty with the US, two of the main officers were going to launch the nuke but he absolutely saved the world that day and refused to launch
