Never forget that Berger finnished only one point behind Senna in 92
@ELSTERLING
@ELSTERLING 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 92 was definitely a bad year for Ayrton, possibly his worst. He was frustrated at Mclaren and F1 in general and pondering an Indycar move at the time (and even went as far as to test in '93) and he let it show. Funny that it should have been sandwiched between two of his absolute greatest seasons.

@raremediumdonewell 3 жыл бұрын
@@ELSTERLING Personally, I would have wanted to see Senna try his luck at CART. Not because of what would happen in F1, but because of the nature of American open wheel racing at the time. Where F1 went to a more technical approach, racing in the Americas was (and kinda is) still a raw kind of racing series, with loose cars and bumpy tracks. Ayrton would have felt at home in that series.

Of Senna, I would say a few moments DEFINED the man: Outqualifying the great Alain Prost by 1.5 secs in Monaco. 5th to 1st within a lap of a wet Donington. Taking out Prost at Suzuka to win the title. Uttering those famous words: "If you no longer go for a gap..." Stopping on track and running across it in the face of cars going at nearly full speed to turn off Comas' engine and save his life. Having an Austrian flag inside his car which he would supposedly wave at the end of the session in the memory of Ratzenberger, if not for his own death, at Imola...

I would say Schumi is not only the No.1 driver of the 90s, but also of the 2000s. Touting him as the absolute GOAT often leads to controversy these days, but I hope the above opinion won't be unpopular.

Yeah, Schumacher is definitely going to be no. 1 in the 2000s video. My predictions; 1) Schumacher 2) Alonso 3) Raikkonen 4) Montoya 5) Hamilton 6) Massa 7) Kubica 8) Button 9) Barrichello (maybe) 10) Vettel (maybe)
@flyingphoenix113
@flyingphoenix113 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's a controversial take at all. Schumacher could have easily won the 06 title if not for that engine failure in Suzuka, and people forget just how hard he fought against Raikkonen for that 03 title (despite the McLaren being the quicker car on most circuits that year). Imo, the only reason his GOAT status is even in contention are his admittedly lackluster years at Mercedes from 2010-2012, but even Ross Brawn has explained why those years have to be viewed as anomalies in his overall career.

I don't know how it would be if Senna didn't die but as history stands to me Schumacher in the 90s is the undisputed best driver. When I watched that 1995 season highlights I was just shocked by how untouchable he was. Then in lesser machinery for the next 3 years he was maximising everything out of the car. I'm confident in claiming had he not had the Silverstone crash in 1999, Mika would only have one world championship.

It did recover quite a lot during the early 2010s when he was at Ferrari but he never quite got back to where he was. It's a real shame, to be honest. I think Newey has a higher profile because he was more involved in the race operations - I'm not sure what he does/did, but I'd noticed that during race broadcasts, pit cameras would show him almost as often such as Frank Williams, Patrick Head, Ron Dennis and Christian Horner. Sometimes he'd even be on the pit wall. With Ferrari, I don't think Rory Byrne was as active beyond designing.

Great summary of 1990's F1. Two of the top five drivers only competed in 4 seasons (Senna) and 3 seasons (Prost). Only Schumacher is in the conversation about the sports best. Hakkinen was quick but needed to be driving the best car, same with Mansell, Hill and Villeneuve. There were a lot of good drivers after the Prost/Senna era but Schumacher was the only great one until probably Alonso.

Nigel broke the record for most wins (9) and, stunningly, the record for most poles (14) in the 16-race 1992 season. He slaughtered Patrese in the FW14B. Mansell should definitely be higher on this list. 1990 is the only reason why Prost should be higher than Mansell in a 90s ranking, as Mansell's 1992 title was definitely better than Prost's 1993 title. Great video, transitions good as always, but for me lack of Barrichello (who beat across full season both Irvine and Herbert and got 2 poles in Jordan and Stewart) and Brundle (the closest teammate of Schumi in that era and driver considered to be one of the best to never win an F1 race) in honorable mentions at least is suprising. Also, make a video "WTF happened with Sebastian Bourdais" Plz.

Could you do 10 worst drivers of each decade? Or is that a tad bit rude

Don't really think any driver cares if they are called the worst driver. So it wouldn't really be rude

@@elliot1111 true but it's more a comparison to other drivers on the grid instead of normal people. They could be crap compared to all of the current drivers on the grid but compared to the average person they are obviously better than us

Well he didn't have particularly competitive equipment. He outdrove it, yes, but great drivers who drive for bad teams tend to be overlooked because they don't have the accolades others have.

You can hardly include someone who never won a race in the 90s in a best drivers of the decade list regardless of how well he drove in limited machinery. Everyone in the list achieved more than he did during that time.

@@ryan515god Yes, you can. With the exception of the WDCs, most of them hardly did anything worthly impressive for as long as Barrichello did from 93-99.
