Michael Johnson has won two olympic golds, and four WC golds. While the world record is important, it's not everything. Besides the world record, Johnson has Van Niekerk beaten in every metric. If Johnson never beat Reynolds' world record (43.29), something he was barely able to do (once) at the end of his career, would you argue that Reynolds was a better 400m runner than Johnson? I'd also like to point out that 2016 shoes are also faster than 1999 shoes. (And Johnson also had injuries throughout his career btw) Joshua Cheptegei has beaten Kenenisa Bekele's world records in the 5000m and 10000m. That does not change the fact that Bekele remains the G.O.A.T. in those disciplines. Johannes Vetter was only centimeters behind Jan Zelezny's world record. If he had thrown further, that wouldn't automatically make him the javelin G.O.A.T. Mike Powell has longest long jump in history. That doesn't change the fact that Carl Lewis is the long jumping G.O.A.T. Aries Merritt, Grant Holloway, and Devon Allen have all run faster than Allen Johnson's PB. That does not dethrone Allen Johnson from his G.O.A.T. status. Tim Montgommery held the 100m world record at one point (before being caught doping) Even if he was clean, that wouldn't mean he in that moment surpassed Maurice Greene in terms of all time status. I could go on. I am not "making up criteria". Greatest of all time status isn't merely about world records. It's a combination of world records, olympic golds and medals, world championship golds and medals, consistency, longevity, winning streaks, season's bests, winning percentage etc. edit: Would anyone really consider Kevin Young a greater 400m hurdler that Edwin Moses, because Kevin Young broke Moses' record once?
