@sydboski
@sydboski 4 жыл бұрын
@@elomon3473 You'd be right if the 40 measured how fast these guys run, but it doesn't. The 40 measures quickness and partial acceleration because the really fast guys do not reach top speed til about 50m out. They are still accelerating at the 40yd mark. So the 40 cannot possible determine who is fastest when they aren't even running their fastest now can it? You need a longer distance to where they can get to full speed and maintain it for some time. The 100m dash is the only race that includes all the aspects of total speed. It has start/quickness, acceleration, top speed, and speed endurance (which slows deceleration after top speed is reached). That said, CJ2K's best 100m is 10.66. That 10.66 ranks him 71st all time in NFL history.

@@sydboski It's about football speed. The 40 is ABSOLUTELY a relevant metric on grass / turf. Line of scrimmage at the 30. The fastest guy to 40 yards likely *doesn't get walked down* the rest of the way to the end zone and that's what matters! Here's the measure of speed in the league in my book . . . if a guy got an ounce of daylight on you . . . by shaking you left or right . . . *could he be caught* ? I'm old enough to remember OJ Simpson playing. In OJ got a step on you, the gap just got wider . . . he literally looked like he was walking away from people who were standing still. I saw the same with Michael Vick decades later. And Deion . . . if he found a seam, it WAS A WRAP. Chris Johnson would have been a beast with a longer career. You need to respect that 4.24.

@@gmnewbold1416 1. I never said the 40 wasn't a relevant metric. I said the 40 doesn't measure how fast these guys run. And it doesn't. 2. Show me where it states "football speed". Also tell me how they measure "football speed" in order to compare players not on the same field or from different eras. 3. I saw OJ play also. Yes he was fast but he didn't have Henry Carr, Deion Sanders, Darrell Green, or Terrence Newman chasing him either. There are a lot of player that once they got a step the haven't been caught. Cliff Branch, Mel Gray, Bob Hayes, Jacoby Ford, Lam Jones, Trindon Holliday, Curtis Dickey, Ron Brown just to name a few. There are plenty more. But those are highlights on film. They give you an opinion on how fast these guys are. Unfortunately speed is not an opinion. It is measurable and provable. 4. All of the REAL top 10 fastest players should have a track back ground. No track background? There is no way they should make the list. You cannot just walk on to a track with no sprint training and run world class times. It is physically impossible. It takes years of training to get to world class status. If you don't have world class speed you should not be on the list because you are not faster than a world class sprinter.

Hayes ran 10:06 in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic final from chewed up lane 1 on a cinder track. He'd run 9.9 in the semis. He clocked the anchor leg in the men's 4x100 TOKYO Olympics in 8.6 seconds, the fastest leg ever run including Usain Bolt. Hayes is #1.

Graddy finished 2nd in 100m at the 84’ Olympics behind Carl Lewis, and also won gold in the 4x100 with Carl & Ron Brown. For one, fast in pads is not the same as fast at the combine. Two, you only get what 3 chances to run the 40 at the combine? Not everyone is going to clock their fastest speed. most don't even care to. Three, some of the players didn't even have measured 40 times in their day. Four, the forty is really for acceleration not speed, most people have to run a little longer to actually reach their top speed. I could go on but I think you get the point.

No DB could cover Curtis, if they threw the ball as often back in the 1970's as they do now, Curtis and Morgan would have some mind boggling numbers. @@keyanrusso9265 Sorry, but no. Ross is not faster than Hill. You must be thinking about the lame 40 yard dash which does not measure how fast these guys run. it only measures quickness and partial acceleration because the really fast runners don't reach top speed till about 50m out. So the 40 cannot possibly determine how fast they run if they are not running their fastest. The 100m dash is the true test of speed. That said, Ross' best 100m is 10.66 and Hill's best is 10.19. One of the best examples of how fast Cliff Branch was is watching him in SBXVIII when Marcus Allen had his great run for a TD. Allen is being chased by some Redskin, and out of nowhere Branch catches them both like they're in slow motion, and provides some interference (legal) on the Redskin to slow him down and keep from possibly catching Allen. (Wouldn't have caught Allen imo, but still, possible.) But just the sheer speed of Branch, who even looked like he was cruising up to them, like he was only in 3rd gear and not even in 4th or 5th gear, was crazy fast.

I’m surprised they didn’t have Ron Brown on here. He was blazing fast, and part of the 84’ USA 4 x 100 team (with Carl Lewis) that won gold in Los Angeles. Renaldo Nehemiah was one of the fastest guys to ever play in the NFL, but I don’t think they wanted to feature him since he had a fairly short and underwhelming career in the league. His most memorable play was getting destroyed by Kenny Johnson. Al Davis liked having speedsters on his team. In addition to Gault, Bo & Branch being on the list, the Raiders also had guys like James Jett, Rocket Ismail, Alexander Wright, and Sam Graddy. Graddy got silver in the 100m in 84’ behind Carl Lewis and also was part of the 4x100 team with Lewis & Ron Brown.

Blessed Man877 Hayes' 9.91 was wind aided so it does not count. His best was 10.06. The first human to legally break the 10 second barrier was Jim Hines 4 years later. Hines also played for the Dolphins and the Chiefs. He is the fastest man to ever play in the NFL.

Chris Paul Hester did not have blazing speed. He had good speed, great agility and elusiveness, he also had great vision. DJax ran a reported 10.5 100m. I can name at least 30 players that have run faster than that.
@sydboski

No there are not plenty with better 100m times than Green 10.08. There are only 7. I can list them if you want. Where does this video state in game speed? The title is "Top 10 Fastest Players", not "Top 10 Fastest Players in Game". No one ever says fastest in game, in gear, on field or any thing else. Which opens the way for the fastest of the fast. The 100m dash.

sydboski Are you serious? I am a Miami Hurricane fan (Season Tix Holder) so i had the luxury of watching Hester a few years before His NFL career. i have never seen him caught from behind! Thats all that counts in football!! He was as fast as any of those guys on the football field.
@sydboski

+Danny Canes Yes I am dead serious. You've never seen him caught from behind? Here look at this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4e3amSjg7KGbqM #43 from the Colts is Matt Giardano he ran 4.48 in the 40. But was a 400m champion in HS. Your boy Hester ran 4.41 in the 40 and 10.61 in the 100m. Very good speed, but not top ten worthy. Just because you never saw him caught from behind doesn't mean he should be in the top 10 all time. There have been a lot of players you haven't seen caught from behind, do they belong? Does Giardano belong? I certainly hope not. To break into the NFL's top ten fastest players of all time you would need to be a world class sprinter, and run faster than 10.10 100m. Willie Gault and Gerald Tinker are tied for 10th place on the all time 100m list.

Wydog Studios DJax only ran 10.5 reportedly. Not in the top 10.
@sydboski
@sydboski 6 жыл бұрын
Looks can be deceiving. That's why speed is not an opinion, it is measurable. You really can't accurately judge a person's speed by just looking at them or watching them run. Everything you see them do is based on the others running with them. DJax running away from a 10.7 DB looks the same as Jerry Rice running away from even slower DB's. What some people call "the eye test" is not close to being exact.

I miss the days of running backs. I started watching football in 2000 and I loved seeing guys like Tiki Barber, Eddie George, Marshall Faulk, Jerome Bettis. I blame the turf because running backs used to have like ten good seasons, now they get 2 or 3 seasons then tear their ACL and they’re never the same after that

You are correct, when you factor in at 5 decades of athlete development from better training techniques due to advanced research, Bullet Bob Hayes's 10.08 would translate into like a 9.8 (at least). You have to consider his closest competition of the time (HE WAS THE FASTEST IN THE WORLD). Jacoby & Trindon didn't even rank in the top 100 in the world. There speed going backwards 5 decades would translate to like a 10.40 when compared to the fastest in the world.

Yep. I saw Hayes play. He was so much faster than everyone it was a joke. Track experts, accounting for the big differences in track materials in the 1960's, put him in the 9.7-9.8 range for the 100mm, faster than any NFL player by a good margin. He also was a real football player, not a track guy who got pulled into football.
