Top 10 Games that SHOULD be in the Top 100

Ah, Carcassonne....My first, "This is not your mama's board game," board game. I was hooked on the hobby because of Carcassonne. Space Base, Rajas...I have them all and I love them all. They each have a unique draw that keeps them in my collection.

I like your picks except for Roll For The Galaxy. Good game but not Top 100 to me. I'd replace it with The Quest For El Dorado. Approchable, awesome replay, simple yet satisfying, great gateway for deckbuilding.

My journey beyond standard deck card games was Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, and Catan in that order. I now only enjoy playing TTR, but still gotta respect what all of these games have done for the hobby

Suggest you do a Bottom 10 list where you discuss the bottom 10 games in BGA and then offer games with similar mechanics that are highly rated.

The Yellow King and Carcosa from the Cthulhu mythos are rumored to originally be inspired by Gustave Naudad's poem "Carcassonne" so Carcassonne is a Cthulhu themed-game.

Space Base never cracking the top 100 is the most surprising to me. You guys probably know this but the Stats tab has rank history graphs going back to 2006.

Carcassone was really my leap off point. More so than Catan. Truly have wonderful memories of just wanting to replay it over and over because i didnt know board games could be like that

Couldn't agree more about both pandemic and legacy games. Played Pan Legacy Seasons 1 +2, great experiences... but that's 20 to 30 hours playtime and done. OG pandemic (with On The Brink xpac) is 100+ hours and still going. Great value, and that's hard to beat.

Now that Earth is out, I can’t bring myself to play Ares Expedition much. It plays in half the time and is so much smoother with how you activate your cards left to right top to bottom.

@@christaggart5687 I agree with your disagree. Ares feels like an interesting engine builder while meeting map objectives. Earth is "I guess I'll do that action." "I guess I'll play this card."

I completely agree with #1. I played Ares first. I think if I had played TM first, I would not have play Ares. It completely replaced Race/Roll/Puerto Rico. I've played them on BGA a few times with friends since playing Ares, but I'm always wishing I were playing Ares.

I think it would be interesting to see the rankings if every single person who played every game ranked every game in every metric to see where games would fall. And also that people wouldn't go in and vote against games just because they didn't like it.

You're right that Patchwork used to be in the top 100! I don't know what its highest rank was. But it was edged out a couple years back.

Love Space Base, love Rajas (at least for inspiring parts of Ark Nova), but Carcassonne is a relic of the past. Almost as much as Dominion in that these games inspired other games that are just infinitely better. I've already sold Ares Edition, as the more I played it, the more I realized it was just an inferior (and more broken) version of Race for the Galaxy. I agree that Roll for the Galaxy is much easier to teach than Race....but if players just spend 10 minutes learning what the symbols mean in Race (and I know that the symbols are the enormous and only slight against Race) you'll enjoy one of the best board games ever created.

Thanks for the BTS of thumbnail creation. I agree with Mike’s take that a legacy game shouldn’t be in the Top 100. I also wish that list had a disclaimer on it saying all the things you both mentioned - these are medium to heavy games for folks way deep in the hobby, don’t start here! I made that mistake and I think it skewed me toward heavy games from the beginning.

I think I’m on the other side of ares expedition. The engine building is there, but the game feels like it’s missing identity. It doesn’t have the sense of accomplishment and competition I feel in the original. Even if we were just comparing base games, I would still have to give it to the OG.😊

To add to your Carcassonne comments. If 3 or 4 or maybe 5 people who have never met before realise they are all into board games then what are the games that they could sit down and play right away? I think it's a short list for various reasons such as because different groups have their favourites and some of us have filled our shelves and don't buy so many new games (ahem 😁) etc. But I do think that Carcassonne is one such game (even if you play one of the 'round the world' variants) and is therefore important, along with Catan for sure, and perhaps Azul and Ticket To Ride.

game heaviness is very subjective. I've had tapestry for 6 years, still don't know what i'm doing. But i can work out a Lacerda in a few plays. being familiar with his mechanics helps though

Rajas of the Ganges, i don’t like the dice rolling mechanic and the theme, the art, those wierd images of wierd gods and stuff puts me off so much that i would never table a game like that 😅. So much no for me.
