I find it difficult to compare skiers from different eras. The material has changed and evolved. Slope preparation is currently different and is also difficult to compare. There is no question that there have been many outstanding personalities who have inspired many people through skiing. They had a charisma that was not only defined by fame and success.

Very shocked five time overall WC champion Marc Giradelli did not make the list. Same with four time overall champ Pirmin Zurbriggen. In addition to being second and third, respectively, in number of overall World Cup titles, both were great all-around skiers, with wins in every Alpine discipline over the course of their careers (with the exception of Parallel, which was not run during their careers). None of the other Men who have won at least three World Cup titles have won in every event that was competed in their careers. Hirscher, in the lead with 8 titles, never won a downhill or combined event. Gustav Theoni, tied third with Zurbriggen, never won a downhill. Phil Mahre and Stenmark, both tied with three titles, never won downhills or super-G (super-G being added as an event right near the end of their careers).

I'm from the Netherlands so I have no dog in this fight but Aamodt's combined career total of twenty World Championship and Olympic medals is an all-time best. He is the second-youngest male alpine skier to win an Olympic gold medal (age 20 in 1992; Toni Sailer was two months younger in 1956). Until 2014, he was also the oldest alpine skier to win an Olympic gold medal. For almost six years, Aamodt led the all-time Marathon World Cup ranking, with a total of 13,252 points. By winning the super-G race at the 2006 Olympics, Aamodt became the first male alpine skier to win four gold medals in the Olympics. If you win the world championship in any sport your considered the best, and all the rest of the world cares about is the Olympics. Aamodt exceeded in both AND he mastered the whole mountain, skiing every alpine discipline, that you don't see today. I think it's safe to say that Aamodt deserves his position. Btw, Ingmar Stenmark has repeatedly shared his admiration for Aamodt - and visa versa.

Nice list, but Tomba's record is inaccurate. He won three Olympic gold medals, two World Championships, four World Cup titles in slalom, four in giant slalom, and one overall World Cup title.

the Herminator should be No.1 on your list.

Agree that Stenmark is a league of its own, and also Aamodt has more WCH and OI medals, but Herminator has way more WC podiums. I see him as somekind of underdog. Like Herman Maier who? but when you see his career you can't be unimpressed

It's not correct 😢: Pirmin Zurbriggen? Marc Girardelli? Gustav Thoni?

I have a results based rating that counts only world cup results - an not, like ski-db, olympics and world championships, trying to make the incomparable comparable. According to this, the most accomplished male skiers to date are: 1 Ingemar Stenmark SWE 2 Marcel Hirscher AUT 3 Marc Girardelli LUX 4 Pirmin Zurbriggen SUI 5 Hermann Maier AUT 6 Aksel-Lund Svindal NOR 7 Gustav Thoeni ITA 7 Alberto Tomba ITA 9 Benjamin Raich AUT 10 Stephan Eberharter AUT Franz Klammer is not in the top 20 as he did only downhill, however, as the best downhiller ever, he deserves an honorable mention. Marco Odermatt will be in the top 10 in a couple of years if he continues to ski like this. Henrik Kristoffersen is also close to the top 10. The best Americans are Phil Mahre and Bode Miller as ## 14/15 respectively. The top 10 women as of today are: 1 Annemarie Moser Proell AUT 2 Lindsey C. Vonn USA 3 Mikaela Shiffrin USA (active) 4 Vreni Schneider SUI 5 Katja Seizinger GER 6 Renate Goetschl AUT 7 Hanni Wenzel LIE 8 Anja Paerson SWE 9 Maria Riesch GER 10 Erika Hess SUI Hence Shiffrin isn't #1 yet, but the top 3 are very close and Shiffrin likely will be #1 by the end of this season. Lara Gut and Petra Vlhova have good chances to end their careers in the top 10.

Where you from? Specially Bode Miller feels like a reach. He obviously was a spectacel all or nothing rider, which is fun to watch No Zurbriggen is crazy! Excpected him in the top 5! He’s probably thr most important skier for the development of the sport. Alberto Tomba feels also missing, but some italiens probably will remind you 😉

Such classifications are perforce arbitrary, but this one is extravagant. I argue the label greatest *skiers* (not downhill or technical specialists) should be for the few ones who won races in all the disciplines. My own number 1 among those few, is Zurbriggen. Girardelli won one more Cup because he was active longer, but Zurbriggen had the sheer class that left you in awe. Bode Miller is close, with Thoeni and very few others.

My number one is Hermann Maier. His life should be made into a film

I would certainly put Zurbriggen and Girardelli on my top ten. The battle of dh vs slalom or gs will go on forever. The combined discipline never worked that out. Stenmark is totally ok as numero uno, Hirscher is my nr 2 and Maier no 3. But then again, we all know that Shiffrin is the boss.
@glenngastonjonsson79549 ай бұрын
As for norwegians on a top ten list, Aamodt is the one and only. So far. He was a fuckin beautiful skier to watch. Braathen will end up as one of the top ten, hopefully.

I think Marc Girardeli and Pirmin Zirbriggin might push a couple of these guys out. Girardelli is probably the only racer to win multiple World Cup season tittles in both Slalom and Downhill, not to mention a GS tittle also. That's not likely to happen again. Oh, and five overall tittles!

Alexander Zhirov could have been included in this list, but a car accident interrupted both his career and his life... "Zhirov was a wonderful skier. I guess... he was a genius." Ingemar Stenmark.
