fun fact, the military doesn't use the barret .50 for most sniping "missions" due the the fact that the Barret is actually an anti-material rifle. they most commonly use a .300 wind mag, or a .338 lapua magnum
@atvman122 жыл бұрын
Lol. Of course. The Barrett is meant to take out things like humvees jeeps trucks even small tanks or halftracks. Imagine telling a small snipe team they have to lug a barret for their 50 mile hoof to their target location. They would break their back before ever getting there. Unless they broke it down and had one person carry half and another carry the other half. Which they do actually do when they have to implement a Barrett

The Day of the Jackal (1973) should most certainly be on the list and the fact that it's not even mentioned reveals a gaping hole in WM's movie kowledge - which apparently doesn't go further back than the 80s. ;-P I'm happy to see a shot from Quigley Down Under, an underestimated film, but to leave out the final showdown scene of the original Jackal movie is quite the omission.
@cinovation38147 жыл бұрын
Fred Zinnemann's 'The Day of the Jackal' is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I was anticipating that it'll be on the list as well, even as an honorable mention. I was disappointed, too, that it wasn't there, but I guess when one thinks about it, the Jackal never completed a successful hit during the film. There was a beautiful scene of Edward Fox's character doing target practice outdoors using a watermelon hanging from a tree, but ultimately he missed by millimeters when it came to take the shot of President Charles de Gaulle's head. WatchMojo's criteria in this video doesn't mention that the sniper scenes must be of successful shots, or that the snipers in the movies must succeed in their missions, so WatchMojo should've emphasized that criteria. To be more precise, one movie listed ('Clear and Present Danger') shows only a scene of target practice when Domingo Chavez (played by 'Breaking Bad's' Raymond Cruz) is crawling in the tall grass while being assessed by the black ops recruiter John Clark (Willem Dafoe), but we know later that the sniper takes out human targets successfully. 'The Day of the Jacket' didn't show winning sniper hits. Anyway, the book by Frederick Forsyth is a masterpiece, too.
@Kalah_7 жыл бұрын
I completely agree, and if WM did think about Jackal and left it out because the shot was a miss, then they should have clarified it. As I understood the criteria, it was the scene itself that was to be judged, and the Jackal has a really great final scene. All through the movie, we've been waiting for this final showdown and the tension has built up so thick you can cut it with a knife. Even though we know that de Gaulle was never assassinated (and so the readers know the Jackal will fail), the plot is so masterfully constructed that we're actually sort of hoping he will succeed. As we see all his planning come to fruition on the screen in those final moments, and Lebel's hard-working police force running as fast as they can to intercept him, we're left on tenterhooks wanting to see what happens next. Then the shot ... and it's a miss ... and he reloads ... can Lebel stop him? Aaaah good old fashioned excitement.
@cinovation38147 жыл бұрын
Yep. Classic film. (Ouch! Did I spell Jackal as "Jacket" in my previous post? Must've been tired). And as for 'Quigley Down Under', that's another piece of fine entertainment. A couple of years after its release, I recommended it to a few Aussie friends of mine and naturally they were keen to check it out. I was not surprised they thought it was cool, but I was actually surprised as to the reason why it was cool. They had already seen 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' and thought it was a load of silly fun, so when they got back to me to rave about 'Quigley' they said, "We didn't know the Sheriff of Nottingham was in 'Quigley Down Under'!" Ha. Australians. It wasn't the fine acting or sharpshooting character skills of Tom Selleck in the movie that they liked, but the scheming, conniving character played with usual brilliance by the late Alan Rickman.

The Enemy At The Gates scene is rather clever, however I have to point something out. The rifle Vasili uses is a Mosin Nagant M91/30 (Later he uses the scoped and curved bolt "PU" version of the same weapon). From what I could tell from the footage shown, as I haven't seen the movie in a long while, the distance was maybe fifty yards at best. Now, I also happen to be the proud owner of a 1937 dated Mosin Nagant M91/30, and a proud user of said rifle for target shooting. I regularly hit pinpoint shots with inch groupings at 200 yards standing with iron sights, no sling, no stand, nothing but my body. That scene was probably the least impressive scene in the movie, and this is coming from someone who actively trains in long range shooting with that very rifle. The end scene where he faces the German sniper is SO much better if you ask me.
@JohnSmith-xv2ob3 жыл бұрын
@Ian Dixon I rewatched it recently and I very much agree with you. Definitely lackluster in other areas regarding snipers.
@JohnSmith-xv2ob3 жыл бұрын
@Ian Dixon Haha I'm from the US. I have some cousins in the UK (my dad is English, Southend/Essex if you're wondering) who have shotguns and I think a rifle or two. Basically though, I had a 1942 Mosin with some fancy modern stock that allowed use of magazines I bought off some guy outside of a bank before work in late 2018, and a buddy of mine was interested so he traded me that rifle for his original 1937 Mosin, a sling, two stocks, bayonet, yellow tip heavy ball ammo (20 rounds) and a scope the following Summer. My dad would tell you to consider moving to the US. You might hear some bad stuff, but really, ask my dad and almost any other immigrant I know, there is nothing quite like having the freedom to own many firearms. I would know. ;)
@JohnSmith-xv2ob3 жыл бұрын
@Ian Dixon I mean it isn't impossible to get one in the UK. Pretty difficult, but not impossible. Maybe one day you'll be able to come on over to the Wild West. I mean, we aren't free like we were after the Revolutionary War (those days must have been glorious), but it's a damn sight better than other places I've been, and I have most definitely been to England. Not that England wasn't fun for the 3 weeks I was there, but the whole "socialist oppression" thing my dad talks about a lot is definitely there!

I was hoping for "Battle of Sevastopol" and scene, where Lyuda first encounters the Axis powers (taking out a fucking tank with normal rifle round is impressive), also actual sniper training and being hunted by the best German sniper deserve a mention.

Hunters killer has the best sniper scene for me. I have re-watched it very many times

Charles Bronson in "Violent City". The glass elevator scene. Precision and revenge perfectly executed.

Their should have been all the sniper moments in Enemy At The Gate
@zach73725 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but that movie is really unrealistic compared to a movie like sniper

Yeah, CoD WaW's Vendetta mission definitely took inspiration from #1

I thought it was. Thank god others knew it as well

CoD takes a lot of inspiration from movies. Omaha beach from CoD 2 is basically Saving Private Ryan for the first half of the mission. Plus there's Battle of the Bulge, A Bridge Too Far and countless others that I remember

I know its a tv show, but the sniper scene in Bodyguard is outstanding!

#1 is basically COD World at War with Reznov and Damitri in the water fountain doing the exact same thing

ThE_JDM_F8N BO1 Except Enemy at the Gates was released first, and was based on the real location of the Battle of Stalingrad. Obviously I don’t know whether or not Vasily ever had an encounter quite like that, World at War was essentially a homage to that scene .

Also Enemy at the Gates where Ron Perlman's character was jumping from on part of a blown out building to another and the German sniper Ed Harris makes a head shot on Perlman while he was in mid air.

Now I know what the mission "vendetta" from world at war was based on

Cavish Gaming Yep, Vendetta is taken from Enemy at the Gates. Looks exactly the same.

When someone wants to make a SNIPER film remember that sniping isnt easy.If you see your target at 3 km you can't aim him and take the shot.

7:40 chris kyle confirmed that it never happened and was added for dramatic effect in the movie.

Wait, but, he died before the movie. Proof if this is actually true would be nice
@ckmoore1014 жыл бұрын
How can he confirm something did not happen, before someone says, it happened? He was killed over a year before the movie.
@tom314806 жыл бұрын
What a good list! I do feel like the scene at the end of "Captain Philip's" could have made it on here too.
@180doman4 жыл бұрын
Yep, should be on the list.

Maybe not the best individual scenes, but definitely all great movies on this list. Quigley Down Under's final shootout totally deserved a spot, though.
