If the Jets beat the Colts in 2009, all critics would point to the regular season and say, "Hey, you had a chance to eliminate the Jets from postseason contention. But you rested your starters, during that game, and they beat you in the playoffs." If that happened, no one would feel sorry for the Colts, not even their own fans.

I'm totally with Belichick on #10. After that game, everyone just kept saying, "he told his defense he didn't believe in them, yadaya." What killed me was no one was saying the call was impractical, everyone was concerned he hurt the defense's feelings.....? They had chance after chance to stop Manning in that half and they failed everytime. They still had a chance to stop them after the 4th and 2, and they failed again. Wouldn't have mattered if the drive started on their own 30 or the opponents.

Literally. They still had a chance to stop manning and guess what? They didn’t. Peyton manning was on fire and couldn’t be stopped. I’d say probably 50-75% chance of converting that 4th and two, vs punting the ball and having about a 10-25% of stopping Peyton based on the previous results of the colts drives that half. Smart call all around, absolutely was the right call.

Brady or Brees - the Ravens apparently considered taking Tom Brady in 2000 - with the Ravens might have made a dynasty to beat all dynasties in Baltimore. It would mean two of the top five players of all time (per Pro Football Reference) on the same team. With Brady and Ogden on one side and Lewis and Ed Reed on the other one might have had a team that was as unbeatable as the 2007 Patriots - only for eight or more years.

I love people talking about Trent Dilfer like they got rid of Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. Dilfer was just an average QB who played for a team with one of the best defensive seasons of all time. The Ravens played an excellent Titans team with Steve McNair and Kevin Dyson that had been the superbowl the previous year, and in the AFC title game they had to play an excellent offense in Oakland that featured Rich Gannon, Jerry Rice, and Tim Brown. To me, it's "Sometimes you win, and sometimes your quarterback got paid by the mob." O'Donnell threw twice. TWICE, to a corner by himself with no receiver near him. The first time he did it, I said he was paid off. When he did it again, I said the same thing. O'Donnell wasn't great. But he was good. Good enough to be a Superbowl QB. So there is no excuse for that, especially as he wasn't pressured, to throw directly to a corner both times. I will never to this day, believe it was anything else than a pay off.

@algini12
@algini12 3 жыл бұрын
@Harry Engel I never blamed Cowher for anything. The onside kick was a brilliant move. But he couldn't fight against his QB who was determined to throw the game. I blame no one except O'Donnell. My concern is also not with having a better QB and that eras team under Cowher having more Superbowls. That's just the luck of the dice, if you will. But its not unrealistic to want a fair chance. Just an unrigged chance at the one we were at. Brown's runs after the interceptions have nothing to do with it. The 2 blatant INT's took away scoring opportunities against a great team that just can't happen intentionally. Of COURSE I don't have a source that the game was thrown. If I, or anyone had such a source and was willing to come forward, that would have happened decades ago. To me its beyond a matter of likelihood though. It was blatantly obvious and should have been investigated at some point. Perhaps the league did and we just never heard about it and its buried in a dusty filing cabinet at NFL headquarters. But the fans deserve better than just a whitewash, because it could damage the league. But if it happened once, It could happen again. It's been a quarter century since that game, and we have not seen something so blatantly obvious happen again. Except maybe with officials and some dubious calls over the ensuing years. But to me, a great wrong was done that was never spoken of or even addressed.

The Lombardi QB sneak will forever be the gutsiest call in NFL history because like the man said: Championship Game, one play left to win or lose the game! You make it, you win the game and you're a legend forever! If it fails, you will forever be the dumbest man in footbal history, and your legacy is forever tarnished! That's a call that you know damn well that every coach in today's NFL would play for OT, none of them, not even Belichick himself would have gone for the TD to win the game in that situation. The next season they pick up Grbac who, in 2000, put up 4,100 yards and 28-14. Only Kurt Warner threw for more yards per game than EG did that year. Oh but they fail to mention Jamal Lewis got hurt in 2001 and they had to rely on 33 year old Terry Allen. A lot easier for opposing defenses to defend you when you don't have the run game support Trent had the year before.. Calls like these are why we watch. Right off the bat number 10. 😳 Most people want to and do call it stupid because it didn't work. (Also because it's a rare time to call the Patriots and Bill Belichick stupid) I call it kind of crazy but not stupid. Manning and the Colts were averaging 3 first downs every possession and 4.2 yards a play that game. So Giving 1 of the most clutch QBs in the League (and all time.) With roughly 1:30, 2 timeouts left I believe. I get it. I am a HUGE Michigan Man and Grad. Being a life long Dolphins fan I am the farthest thing from a Pats fan. However I don't knock him for trying to win the 🎮 game on 1 play instead of the nerve racking 2 minute drill that Peyton Manning continued rip that Pats defense apart. Half a foot the other way and the Patriots would have been gold. I hate how coaches automatically get called dumb or something for calling plays that are not status quo.

Red Right 88 is a play that Cleveland fans will never forget. Given the weather conditions and the fact that their kicker was struggling on that day due to the weather and health issues so it made sense to try a pass play but Sipe should not have thrown the ball unless the receiver was clear. He should have just thrown the ball away. Maybe the kicker makes the kick this time and the Browns win the game.

Red Right 88 was the right move. Their kicker was nowhere near 100% healthy for the season and Cockroft even admitted that he should've gone on IR. He was absolutely terrible all season long and was missing everything leading up to that game. The problem was in execution. Kosar forced a tight pass when the coach wanted him to only throw if someone was wide open. If it wasn't wide open, Kosar was supposed to throw it out of bounds. Instead, forces the pass to Newsome and the game is over.

Every coach that's ever become a head coach played in an era of football where it was harder to score or move the ball than it is at that present day. That's the evolution of football. Also, most coaches are middle aged men who metaphorically are like old dogs. You can't teach them new tricks. Too many of those guys instinctively don't have it in them and don't get that by punting the ball, they put themselves really at a disadvantage because it's so much easier for opposing offenses to score. Especially DEFENSIVE coaches who think in terms of a defensive player of making the tackle, getting the pass rush, deflecting the ball etc. It's an uncommon man who thinks outside the box of his own mind especially when the methods and instincts they have had for years are the reason they got to the job in the first place in their mind.

The cowboys versus Packers in the '60s was a personal thing. Vince Lombardi have been the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants in the 1950s. The defensive coordinator from the same team at the same time was a player/coach named Tom Landry. The two of them went on to be the head coaches of the cowboys and Packers in the next decade. That is why the cowboys and Packers rivalry was so intense.

Related to Dilfer "You have to respect that they decided to go in a direction" Well that was the problem, respect. They didnt inform Trent. They didnt offer him his old backup job back. They didnt even give him his ring personally, it got shipped to him after he left. The Ravens were as disrespectful as possible and a lot of us Marylanders wanted to apologize to trent but couldnt back then. No internet connections to people like today. Billick was not a good coach. He was supposed to be an offensive wizard coming from the Vikings and instead he won with one of the most abysmal offensive records in the NFL. Marvin Lewis was the man who engineered the Ravens super bowl win. And Matt Stover(Who better get into the hall.) Dilfer fit the program perfectly as a backup, he could step in as a steady hand, not throw the ball away, mentor younger players about high stress situations and life in the league. He was ideal to develop a younger player around. We had it all with the one attribute you cant buy in a player- experience of winning with your team- and we didnt just throw it away, we were as disrespectful as possible about it. Absolutely disgusting. We should have fired Billick after Grbac. The players knew we were screwed with Elvis.

The team was one good running back away from winning the super bowl. They had just come off the NFC championship game and barely lost it. And the Cleveland browns were also willing to offer the same amount of stuff to get Walker. There were three teams at least interested in Herschel at the time, all of them were willing to offer absurd deals. The thing was, the Vikings just had the bad luck of being the team that won the sweepstakes. What absolutely killed them was draft picks that were attached to players offered. That was the dumbest part of the deal, not just the straight up picks

@@indy_go_blue6048 No a gusty call that failed is Belichick going for it on 4th and 2 on their side of the field. That was a risky move that backfired, the Colts resting their starters is the definition of taking the easy way out. You are worried about an injury in a "meaningless game" so you sit them to rest for the playoffs. Which given they had a chance at a perfect season and still did this showed their nerves. Either way, it was dumb and did nothing to help them anyway.

Some of these calls make no sense at the time. But when you sit back and think about it you understand why. For example Red Right 88, one of the most painful losses in Cleveland history.
