That’s how I started researching consistently, almost obsessively because I needed an answer to cope with the pain. From there, it all started. My MD told me that any school that wants a student besides Howard and maybe Duke, only cares about can you get large amount if loans 250-400k of loans. He said it was a good choice for him but he probably would have went another route! Only reason he wanted to become a MD is because every year for 3 weeks he goes back to Africa to give free healthcare to his small city back home. He said he still owes 100k in student debt, down from 388k after 6 years of practice. He said also there are only soo many Residency spots in the US for placement. He personally knows of 6 people after 7 years of graduating med-school, that they can't get a spot and they fall further down in rankings to get in a Hospital to train. Who the hell wants to gamble 500k in debt!? Glad I choose the Nursing route!

I have considered going to Medical School upon the completion of my Chemistry Degree, but realized that I love the chemical component of medicine and am probably going to pursue my PharmD in Pharmacology. Medical School is very expensive, incredibly competitive, difficult, and not only do you need to complete 4 years of schooling, but an additional 2-6 years of residency depending on the field you choose. In the US they train for about 11-13 years. Other countries it can 3, 5, 8. The outcomes in many other countries is just as good as in the US. The salary in the US is about x2 what it is in other countries. So dermatologists make about $350k+ when in other comparable parts of the world it would be $100-200k. Corruption

Great video. However, I do want to say that if you are an MD, DO, DDS, DMD, etc. and you have lost any love or passion or interest in your job, you can absolutely learn to love your career again (or begin to love it if you never truly did). My father is an ENT. He also further specialized in cancer surgery and then later facial plastics and reconstructive surgery. He lost interest in his career during his residency. However, he found a way to get past that, and it was through professional therapy and being open to new ideas. He found his love for it again. There are many good reasons people become physicians.

I grew up around doctors. Let me tell you. These guys and gals are EXTREMELY smart and/or EXTREMELY hard working. These guys are literal FOUNTAINS of knowledge and have BOUNDLESS discipline. If you want to become a doctor, you must be prepared to work your ass off for 15 years. And keep your persuasive skills sharp because you can go very far with the slightest connections in the medical world. Above all, love all of it. Love it so much that you'd be willing to sacrifice your sleep for it. Even your social life (but the medical world is huge, and you'll be constantly interacting with strangers, so it's not so bad). Be prepared to give your life for it, because you will be having people's lives in your hands.

10 reasons why medicine is the best career (Current M1 and probably biased): 1) Don’t like people: pathology, radiology, research, hospital administration. 2) too much debt: HPSP, NHSC, and other full ride scholarship options. 3) Too stressful? Do DERMATOLOGY 4) Too competitive: Do Family medicine 5) Too time consuming? Do academic medicine 6) Too long? BS/MD route, you’ll be done with everything before 30 7) Too boring? Do emergency medicine 8) Wrong specialty? Subspecialize, chances are you can change a lot of what you do. 9) Too competitive? Go to the Caribbean 10) Too overrated? Probably, specializing in saving lives is no big deal and you could probably learn everything about the human body in a 2 year masters program.. cough cough PA school (sarcasm, no disrespect intended) In the end, it will be difficult, demanding, stressful, and time consuming, but if this is your passion you’ll always find the positive things otherwise you’re in the wrong path. This is precisely the reason why I chose to major in biomedical engineering as an undergrad. Biomedical engineering is honestly a pretty bad major if you want to get an engineering job, because you learn a little bit of everything and not enough of anything (when I say engineering job, I meant a job that involves building and designing things; biomedical engineering isn't actually that bad if you're trying to go into consulting or working for the FDA). However, majoring in biomedical engineering allowed me a chance to still pursue my interests in engineering while at the same time fulfilling the premed requirements. In my case, I still had to put in a lot of extra work for the premed requirements because I wasn't required to take organic chem but there are bioengineering programs that have a lot more overlap with the premed requirements. This would not have been possible if I was to major in biology because biology requires you to take a lot of additional bio classes that have little to do with premed and even less to do with engineering. I could've majored in an engineering major and do premed on the side but that's a lot more work than doing biomedical engineering because you have to complete the engineering coursework on top of premed courses. The end result was the biomedical engineering degree offered me the option of either going into engineering or going through with the med school admissions route. In the end I chose to go onto grad school to do a computer science masters degree because I want to work with artificial intelligence and machine learning but I don't regret making the choice to go into biomedical engineering, I regret staying with it for so long especially since I knew I wanted to get into CS after my freshman year and I could've switched majors without losing any credits, but then again if I were to switch, I doubt I would have had the opportunity to work on a senior design project that exposed me to machine learning like the one I worked on for my final year in biomedical engineering.
@minhquando1004 жыл бұрын
For those of you who read my comment and are thinking about doing one of the two alternative options to what I did, here's my take on that: 1. The biology major: if you choose to major in biology, you really have to be all in on going into a health care profession. It is not easy to make the transition from bio into engineering. The reason why it's hard to make the transition from bio into engineering is because biology requires more memorization, and engineering requires much more logical reasoning. This naturally leads to the difference in the methods of studying for the two fields, biology will require you to make a lot of flashcards and read and memorize your notes, whereas engineering will require you to do more practice problems in order to truly understand the logic. And hence why a lot of bio majors are completely garbage at math, physics, and computer science. 2. Taking premed courses along with your engineering coursework: this option is actually the best option, it's even better than biomedical engineering because it gives you solid job opportunities AND you get the option of continuing onto the medical school admissions track, and in some cases it actually might help you stand out from other applicants when medical school admissions committees are looking at your application. However, the downside is it's more work than just majoring in biomedical engineering and biology. But if you do choose to go with this option, my number one advice would be to do your premed courses during the summer, I did organic chem 1 & 2 summer of my freshman year, biochem and cell bio summer of my sophomore year, and microbiology and genetics summer of my junior year and it was hard but it was doable.

@@minhquando100 I'm thinking of majoring in bioengineering with pre med so I can go into engineering if I decide that med school isn't for me. Would a bioengineering degree provide me with a variety of career options? Are there other engineering disciplines I should consider? How difficult is it to keep up your GPA with an engineering major?
@minhquando1004 жыл бұрын
@@AB-sr4xd like i said, bioengineering is pretty shitty if you're trying to get an engineering job. it's not bad if you want to work for the FDA, the USPTO, or go into consulting, but again, i wouldn't consider any of those jobs to be engineering jobs because you're not designing or building anything. other engineering disciplines you should consider would be computer science and computer engineering because both majors have excellent job opportunities. as for keeping up your GPA, it's doable but it will require a lot more work. for example, if you're trying to major in CS and do your premed requirements, you're essentially putting in an extra semester of coursework because most (if not all) of the premed courses with the exception of calc 1 & 2 and physics 1 & 2 are probably not going to count towards your CS degree so if you want to keep your GPA up, you should figure out a way to spread out your coursework, that way, you don't have to end up taking organic chem in the same semester with hard CS courses like algorithms... my advice to you would be to take courses over the summer. whichever courses you find easier, take those during the summer, whichever ones you need more time with, take it during the year. now keep in mind that it's not always possible to do that, especially as you get into your junior and senior year. for example, in my case, i had no choice because my bioengineering courses are only offered during the year, so i had to take my premed courses during the summer. so sometimes you're just going to have to suck it up and push through those difficult semesters. good luck.

Big Facts! Working in Healthcare IT, I work relatively close with MDs in different practices. I can say that your primary care physicians are SPENT. 10-11 workdays (even at home), coworkers becoming bothersome, corporate conjuncture (Often times in meetings with higher-ups in the medical group after work hours about insurance), credentialing, job goals, actual rivalries with other MDs within or outside of the practice, and then there's me, the guy who has to tell them that the software that they use to record medical information is being updated and some fuctionality may change with the applications. Tough. NPs and PAs do virtually the same thing but they seem happier. The only difference is that they can't prescribe schedule 2 drugs (which also gets delegated to the MD as well along with their usual workload).

Both of my parents are MDs and my mother never wanted me to be follow their footsteps because of the amount of work they do is just insane but that was a choice only I can make and I went for it. The catch is the things in this video doesnt really apply to me because Im from turkey. Here things are hella different first difference is you can go to med school straight out of high school all you have to do is being in the top 20 thousand people out of 2.4 million in the university entrance exam (YKS) for a free med school and 50 thousand for a private one( which is quiet expansive). And only M.Ds can write a prescription, there is no such thing as a D.O. After you finish 6 years of med school you became a general practitioner and make around 15k USD a year but you can take a really hard exam to became a specialist if you pass the exam you will became a assistant specialist and make 17k USD a year after u finish your residency (like 5 years) you can finally make 25-30k USD a year but it depends on the speciality. That was the money talk and it can sound like so little money for u guys but its quite good here. Downside is you really cant buy good cars and electronics in any job other than doing bussiness on your own which is really risky because of the corruption.

That could apply more in countries like the US, Canada and the UK. In some countries medical school is extremely cheap, for example 5.000 or less (though your salary in those countries is much less than in the US or the UK) so debt is minimal or nonexistent. Other than that, there are specialties where you work 9 to 5 jobs with little to call, for example family medicine, pediatrics, etc... But yeah, you have to be extremely dedicated and do a ton of research in order to actually go into medicine, so yeah a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant would be more feasible career choices for those who don't avoid the problems you've listed.

Im a med student and truth is that for me medschool was the easiest path because I have slightly above average memory. And when I say ez, I mean because it doesn't rely on luck or opportunity. It's just straightfoward memorizing and tada. Litteraly the last year of highschool I was like: mmmh time's coming what should I do? Then i applied for medschool 1 year exam and got in. Specificity in my country is that you don't need some build up good grades since middleschool with only A and interviews. It's a test exam entrance with ranking on 1 year. The way I like it, no luck, pure objectivity and no subjectivity (aka inteviews). The entrance rate is about 8-10%, so you need to rank in the top 10%. Also to answer your question of why not become a nurse to help ppl? Well, nurse school is not as intellectually stimulating as medschool, you barely scrath the surface of things when you get to really go deep in medschool. Medschool is i'd say #1 passion. and love for medical sciences (if you're that nerdy kid watching back in the days those TV docs on discovery science/ nat geo etc in your free time, then that's for you) #2 purpose in life . Man, in my year class there's a few former bankers and finance ppl who were making BIG money in their previous career. But they changed everything in their late 20's because they found no meaning in just making money. For some people its okay and a job is a job as long as it makes money. But some people need a TRUE prupose and meaning to their job. #3 status. Obviously, walking chin high and proud is great #4 money. Comes with status. Not the biggest money, but it's above average so more than decent.

This is basically supply and demand. Becoming a doctor is difficult because they want individuals who are willing to go through the academic rigor to become a physician. If medical school was like getting your business degree, then EVERYONE and their mom Will become a physician. Well, you can’t pay everyone 200K per year! Also, your friend who had to reapply to residency multiple times, he probably has some red flags on his application… most US med schools have a 92% match rate! There are state schools that cost less than the amount you will spend on a MBA or some other degree. Therefore, if you can’t handle the entrance exam or pre-medical coursework, medical schools DON’T WANT you.

Dude you are 100% right. I quit after 3 years of residency and you have no idea about the mental torment this wrong decision has had on my life. But it did turn out to be the best decision of my life though because it allowed me to start a business and try to get out of medicine forever. But your advice is so solid I advise EVERY pre-med student to not just watch this and think "I AM MENTALLY STRONG ITLL BE OK" that means nothing unless you really want to do medicine - GO AND F'ING SHADOW DOCTORS AND SEE EXACTLY WHAT THEY DO IN THE HOSPITAL MEDICAL SCHOOL IS ALSO AN ILLUSION OF THE JOB

@@myyt7590 If you truly want to do medicine you will never need to worry about money or a side business. So really find out if it is for you or not, if it is then just focus on your medical career for now IMO

This is absolute truth, I have around doctors and medschool teachers and those are the facts... I wanted to write I wish everybody should listen to this, but if they did, the healthcare would collapse. Out of all the medschool students I know, about 50% chose it because of family pressure (or subtle "brainwashing"). Around 30% do it for the status, mostly seeming to have self-esteem issues, wanting to be finally respected. Something about 20% do it for the money, especially because here in Europe, being a doctor is extraordinarily financially stable job no matter where you live. Only about 10% do it for the job itself, and many of those stay on medschool education and medical research. People which you described as good doctors can be great just about anywhere. There is no way enough of them would sacrifice majority of their free time in the next 30 years to become a majority among doctors.

Wow very insightful, thank you. I do have a childhood story and all that. But I believe I want to become a surgeon because I love the challenge that it comes with as well as the complexity of the human body. I know it sounds very cliche but I hope to get shadowing opportunities and figure out if I really want to do that.

Hey thanks for the video, and the red flags helped me to rethink on things. The thing is, my parents actually don’t pressure me to be a doctor at all. My mom studied medicine and hated it and switched her career. I’m interested in medicine because I like taxonomy and have always loved nature documentaries. As for the respect and money, they’re not my main goals but are good additions.

I think it is mainly due to the prestige and feeling of being a Doctor of Medicine.

I absolutely agree with you Shane, I was soo pressurized by my parents relatives and some strangers idek to become a doctor and I rlly couldn’t see myself there. From the time I was like born my dad wanted to make me a doctor, coz it was his dream and he couldn’t be one. So I was basically brainwashed by my own parents to become a doctor coz its respectful and shit and i foolishly believed more like , made myself believe that it was what I wanted. When I finished highschool I realized it wasn’t for me . It was so hard to figure out wt to do coz I still wanted to be in the health care field but just not a doctor or a nurse then finally I made a decision to study health sciences and I’m gonna pursue it next year. Hope I do well😭 And others please don’t become a doctor when u actually don’t want to:)

Unfortunately - Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants - and heck even Registered Nurses - are paid too much - in comparison to becoming a MD - this is probably not good for society.

In comparison you are right but for the work all medical employees make is very low compared to what they put in.

For who is really passionate but can't afford it, there are private medical schools in italy, they last six years and cost around 12k a year, and when you're back in the us you can go right away into residency, the courses are in english, or if you want to save more money, you can go into a public school (public unis are as good as private ones in here) still 6 years programs but for 2-3k dollars a year. same thing, as you're back you can go right away into residency. Same thing for countries like switzerland, spain and france, you have to pass an admission test and you're in. :)

i think you saved me. there was no pressure( my several close relatives are doctors and they used to tell me not to become one --) nor willing of status. i just start imagining myself as one, also being dead honest with myself. at some point i wanted it to get momentum in wealth and actually start business. i did not know what i wanted but now i still don't know. yikes.
