8 years later and Dom's death gets me as hard as it did when I put that disc in my 360 when I was 15. Never thought they'd top Maria, but Dom's look of relief before ramming the Imulsion tank and Marcus' struggle while being pulled back by Anya while the instrumental to Madworld tugs at me enough to still bring a tear to my eye when I see it. Everyone sees GoW as just some cover based testosterone trip, but its a tale of the horrors and sacrifices war brings and the monsters it creates with those little bits of humor sprinkled in to keep the group's sanity.

Noble Six struggled through an already lost war, and he was soo close to escape the Eternal Hell, only for a Covenant Destroyer to make sure that doesn't happen. And Dom, he had lost his kids on E-Day, and 7 years later he finds his Wife, but she has been tortured beyond saving, so Dom Mercy kills his own wife, and he gave up after seeing Maria's grave, leaving Dom to constantly lose more people in his life. Marcus Fenix is THE BEST Written Protagonist in Gaming, because his whole character takes on the serious theme of "Constant Loss". Marcus starts with a Family and makes a group of friends he treats as family, and ends with losing his Family, and Dom his closest friend.

Doms death seriously got me, I mean Marcus and Dom have been best friends for so long. You can see how Marcus refuses to let himself think Dom has died at first as he yells "Damn it, let me get him outta there!" Even after the first explosion. They would have died from the plague anyway, this way their deaths had meaning. They died so that countless could live. Cole McGrath was true hero. Not because he made a choice, but because he fought hard to make that choice happen. He fought so dam hard, facing off against the most powerful conduit that has ever lived, so he could get closer to his own death. He was fighting to reach his own death, so that others could live. He did what so few are willing to do. He fought an impossible fight, so that he could reach his death, because his death would mean millions could live. Dragon out!
