2023 is winding down. It's been an odd year at the box-office, but it's time to start end of the year lists. So today I'm going to rank the 10 highest grossing movies of 2023 (in the United States).
I include the gross of 2023, but that doesn't require that a movie RELEASED in 2023.
Also, I am aware it's possible Aquaman 2 could end up making it on this list or another film. But I have an opening in my schedule this week and I won't later this month after the final potential big hits drop. It is what it is.

Dan Murrell, a movie KZbinr covering a lot of box office info did an interview with the creators of Sound of Freedom. As far as I know, they directly stated to him that the reported gross is purely the combined total of claimed tickets + regularly bought tickets. Hope that helps. Love the video!

Of the 8 I’ve seen I’d go: 8. The Little Mermaid 7. Super Mario Bros 6. Barbie 5. Avatar: The Way of Water 4. John Wick Chapter 4 3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 2. Oppenheimer 1. @@michaelg2077 it doesn’t bother me either, but I respect the take as I do understand why. However, I would say both ended good for me. We started Infinity War with Thanos and finished it with him. The Avengers were also our main characters but more so Thanos. Spider Verse started and ended with Gwen. It came full circle. Miles was equally important, but even interviews confirmed the story was about both. Infinity War is about both sides and we only saw one have their “good ending”. Now we gotta see the other half get theirs…

Well, I thought that Infinity War ended a story with the Avengers being defeated. We obviously knew they would be back to fight Thanos, but that plotline was too long to fit right at the end. Whereas Across the Spider-Verse ends when the tension is at its highest and we know that, at that moment, something is about to happen. Going back to Infinity War, it would be like ending the movie when Thanos arrives in Wakanda.

hard to believe that they not only met expectations but actually exceeded them for Across the Spider-verse. Into the Spider-verse was my favorite movie ever (tied with the Incredibles) so I was nervous going in, but I could tell by the end of the Gwen Stacey intro to the 2nd film that they'd done it

Even though we're still in early December with a few major films left, I don't really think we'll get much more from the box office this year. I could see Wonka making it past Quantumania and into the top ten, but I'm not 100% confident in that (although I do think it'll at least get close) Edit: This comment was on the assumption that the video was about Worldwide Box Office, not Domestically. Great idea for a video but I think choosing the 10 highest grossing movies worldwide might be more representative of what audiences in general spent their money on in the year of 2023. I mean, you have movies like Sound of Freedom that made like 80% of their box office in the US and on the flip side of that you have something like Fast X which only made 20% of its box office domestically. Having the highest grossing movies worldwide would account for differences in where movies made most of their money and showcase what were the most popular movies in the world this year. I enjoyed the actual ranking, quality stuff as always!

I can totally see and understand how ATSV could be number 1 but personally for me guardians 3 is my favourite. The guardians have such a special place in my heart. It's heartfelt and emotional. The characters and visuals are fantastic. The action is amazing. The villain is top tier. The acting is great. Great soundtrack and of course it just amazing how gunn closed out this trilogy and this team. Every characters journey is completed in such a satisfying way

Godzilla Minus One: 8/10 Napoleon: 7/10 I did enjoy Napoleon thanks to the amazing shots and epic battles I haven't seen since Braveheart. But I guess Napoleon really isn't that interesting and I felt Vanessa Kirby outshined Joaquin. Vanessa has Lady GaGa vibes when it comes to their acting. Napoleon is better than House of Gucci but probably not better than Ridley's prior film to that: The Last Duel. We forget Ridley released two films in 2021 and only about two months apart. And it's not better than Joaquin's earlier 2023 film: Beau Is Afraid. Ridley Scott isn't really one of my favorite directors like Tarantino, Scorsese, Spielberg, and Zemeckis are for me but I enjoy the epic visuals he puts in his films. I can envision Napoleon winning an Oscar for costume design or cinematography. Oppenheimer vs. Flower Moon vs. Napoleon Favorites - Oppenheimer Killers of the Flower Moon Napoleon Best looking - Napoleon Killers of the Flower Moon Oppenheimer I like Scorsese more than Nolan and Scott, but Oppenheimer wins between the three. I do have Oppenheimer and Flower Moon on one of my phones and KotFM does get better with rewatches. The music is peaceful. It's a movie I can play in the background before going to sleep the way I did for The Hateful Eight and the good ol' The Big Lebowski. You can never truly judge a Scorsese film after one viewing even if it's 3.5 hours. After finally watching the GotG Holiday Special 4 days ago, it helped enhanced GotG Vol. 3 for me. Nope It had some clunkers like The Book of Boba Fett's finale, Multiverse of Madness, Morbius, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ms. Marvel, Love and Thunder, She-Hulk, and The Rings of Power. But overall, I felt it had a deeper roster of good content. It's not like 2023 doesn't have it's fair of crap either with the likes of Quantumania, Secret Invasion, Dial of Destiny, and The Marvels. The only saving grace MCU gave me this year was Loki. This year isn't completely over yet. I might still enjoy Poor Things and The Iron Claw. 2022 > 2021 > 2023 > 2020 Perhaps 2024 looks a little more promising but I wouldn't hold my breath thanks to the strikes delaying projects. It gets more exciting by 2025-2027. We get The Batman II, Superman: Legacy, Fantastic Four, Gladiator II, Dead Reckoning Part II, Tron 3, Fast X Part II, Thunderbolts, Captain America: A Brave World, Avatar 3, Blade, and the final seasons of Andor, Stranger Things, and Cobra Kai in 2025.

The reason why Barbie wasn’t aimed towards kids, is because they wanted a movie for the adults who had grown up with Barbie and had their opinions on her. There are already loads of Barbie films for kids, so it’s nice to have one for adults as well 😊

I finally saw Godzilla Minus One yesterday along with Napoleon. Best Godzilla film ever made but... it may NOT be my favorite Godzilla film ever made. I had some pacing issues with it. Some parts, I was almost falling asleep. I wasn't completely engaged to the story and we see Godzilla pretty quickly. No waiting 30+ minutes for him to show up and tear shit up. We see him within 5 minutes. Within 15 minutes, I started thinking Minus One makes a perfect double feature with Oppenheimer the way Sofia Coppola's Priscilla is complementary to Baz Luhrmann's Elvis. In Oppenheimer, we only saw it from the American perspective. We didn't even see the attack. Minus One is coming from the Japanese POV but post-WW2 during the atomic bombs' aftermath. Godzilla is a metaphor to the atomic bombs on Hiroshima/Nagasaki the same way King Kong is a metaphor to African slavery. We should've got Oppenzilla. Godheimer or Zillaheimer sounds weird and Oppenheimer did come out first. It's true that this film is more of a modern remake to the 1954 film and not the kaiju fighting films that would come out after the original classic and were basically used to help sell kaiju toys. So my FAVORITE Godzilla film remains... Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). It's not better than Minus One by any means. The human characters in Minus One are much better developed. I probably like Noriko more than any human character who appeared in GvK. But GvK is more rewatchable and more fun. I prefer the fun Godzilla films over the more serious Godzilla ones we got in 1954, 2014, and 2023. I'm starting to think Godzilla is one of my top 10 favorite movie characters ever. I knew him before I ever saw Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, and Star Wars. I'm aware he's the big bad monster in Minus One like he was in the 1954 film. And the Legendary one is more a protector of Earth like he's the Anakin of kaijus bringing balance to order and chaos. Godzilla rules! I'm loving my Hiya KOTM figure. The beige/copper on it doesn't look good in KZbin videos, but in real life, they look fine especially under direct sunlight. I corrected the head enough that the gap is barely noticeable. It's not a flawless figure anyway. The largest dorsal plate isn't 100% aligned to the dorsal plates below it. What can you expect from plastic toys made in China? Like 99% of the general population would not notice the flaws if I never said anything. Say I sold my KOTM to get the Hiya GvK V2, who is to say that won't be flawed either? And it's not like I'm planning to sell it for profit. It's there just for display and it already lost most of it's value once it's out of the box. What I need now is for Hiya to make a Minus One Godzilla. Make it half the size of my KOTM to get the right scale for it, same articulation as the MonsterVerse ones, splash some brown color on it, and I'm good. The Bandai is decent but I don't want it to be only gray as the color. I'm starting to understand the addiction collecting Godzilla toys. I will say that I may now prefer the Legendary Godzilla over any other Godzilla design and this includes Minus One and I wasn't a fan of it initially but getting the Hiya figure helped me like it more. Minus One has a head closer to a T-Rex shape but he moves slowly like he does in the Toho films. He moves very stiff. I find Minus One Godzilla to be rather weak since this is a throwback to 1954 when he was half the size as MonsterVerse G19/G21 and this doesn't involve the kaiju fighting with other titans. It really wasn't difficult to defeat Godzilla in Minus One. KOTM/GvK Godzilla would steamroll over Minus One Godzilla since he weighs 4x heavier and is 230 feet taller. So I guess my favorite Godzilla film and Godzilla design now comes from Legendary. I may not have the urge to buy a Minus One figure anymore although I do find his dorsal plates to look really good. I expect GxK to have Kong getting wounded by Skar King and then coming to Godzilla for help to battle him and Shimu. Big G returns the favor after Big K helped him defeat Mechagodzilla. Favorite Godzilla Films 1. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) 2. Godzilla Minus One (2023) 3. Godzilla (2014) 4. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) 5. Godzilla (1954) 6. King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) 7. Godzilla (1998) You know if I saw the 1998 Godzilla again and just pretend it's a different creature, I don't think I would hate it that much. It's a monster/disaster movie a decade before Cloverfield where you see this large creature destroy Manhattan. Favorite Godzilla Designs 1. KOTM/GvK (2019/2021) 2. Godzilla (2014) 3. Godzilla Minus One (2023) 4. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991) 5. Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) Honestly, I haven't seen enough Godzilla films to be a great judge at it. All I know is I prefer the Legendary/MonsterVerse design the most when I initially didn't like it. Getting the Hiya figure helped. I know some prefer the 2014 one as it's better proportioned but I prefer the larger dorsal plates on the 2019/2021 ones and no longer mind the smaller head. We also got the Showa roar back by 2019. KOTM and GvK are essentially the same with a few minor tweaks. The 2014 was Godzilla at his weakest state. Minus One might have the coolest spine as his largest dorsal plates look like shurikens and he looks more menacing being the Jaws/Jurassic Park dinosaurs of this film, but he's not that powerful. Terrifying and powerful are two different things. It seems very easy to defeat him being smaller and slower. He still moves like he did in '54. Didn't like his roar either. Favorite Godzilla Fight: Godzilla vs. Kong Favorite Godzilla Roar: Showa (esp 1962) Favorite Godzilla Rubber Suits: Hensei Rewatching King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), I didn't realize how awful both Kong and Godzilla looked. As a kid from the 80s, it doesn't register until you get older and see more Godzilla movies. Godzilla had this Oscar the Grouch muppet look in '62. Kong looked much worse. An extremely ugly gorilla costume. But Godzilla 1962 does have my all-time favorite roar. If I decided to get more Godzilla figures, I would only get one for Minus One, the 1991 GvKG, and Final Wars. The SH Monsterarts for G91 looks awesome! One of the best figures I've seen of him. But I'm very happy with the Hiya KOTM being it's already my favorite design and GvK being my favorite movie with him. GvK had more epic fights than anything I saw from Captain America: Civil War. Godzilla's height 2019/2021: 394 ft 2014: 354 ft 1991/1995/2004: 328 ft 1954/1975/2023: 164 ft Godzilla can pretty much kill any of the largest dragons in Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and any dragon before HOT D starts. Just swinging his tail alone would cripple Balerion and Vhagar. But Godzilla would be a featherweight to Superman who can probably throw him into outer space.

I've only seen 5, but this is how I would rank them: 5. Super Mario bros (3/10): At first, I thought this movie was fine, but then the internet decided that if you don't like it, you hate fun, and that made me like it significantly less. 4. Barbie (7.5/10): I pretty much have the same thoughts on this one as Sean. 3. Oppenheimer (9/10): It's a masterpiece, I just like the other 2 more. 2. John Wick 4 (10/10): The John Wick series has always been really good, but this movie is so much better than the other 3 it's insane. The first 3 John Wick movies are really fun, but this one is a masterpiece. 1. Across the spider-verse (10/10): Maybe my favorite movie of all time.

1) Spiderman AtS: This film was just amazing on every lvl, amazing visuals, fun action, great humor, love the characters, really engaging and thought provoking plot that could go anywhere, and all the memberberries I could eat. Can't wait for the finale. 2) Guardians 3 - Marvel hasn't been doing great lately but this delivered nearly everything I want when I go to see one of their films. Biggest downside is it really puts into stark contrast what's wrong w/ the rest of the recent films. 3) Sound of Freedom - Just a really solid and well made film. That might not seem like a lot but when compared to the competition this year, it was more than enough. Haven't seen Oppenheimer yet though so can't say if that would have been 3rd for me this year.
