They're all cool. Not sure if its the most functional, probably not, but the Gingery lathe is cool in that it teaches many skills. The concrete lathe perked my interests.

My favorite new lathe you can find in a video called "Worlds First DIY Wire EDM Lathe!". Yes, he uses Electrical Discharge Machining wire with a lathe that is submersed. It is next level machining.

I was thinking about making a dovetail style lathe like the Sherline 8 inch lathe. the lathe bed would be made with a 4x1x40inch cool rolled steel and a 3x3x1/4inch steel tube. Grinding and scraping will be required to get it as straight as possible. This is a good video that make my creativity turn right round. I like the ginger lathe because of the use of casted parts and I was thinking about doing a loss PLA casting method but I live in a apartment.

I built a Gingery Lathe in high school, early 80’s. A lot of work to pull it off, with a metal shop, and help from the machine, I worked in part time, after school.

If you have to buy the materials to build one of these lathes, you'd' be better off buying a complete commercially built machine. Even if the machine has to be refurbished it is still a better money proposition. If your heart is set on building a lathe, buy one of the Chinese bench lathes. They are essentially slapped together machines that should be regarded as kits. You get all the fun of taking it completely apart and building it into something you can actually use.

much cheaper to find a lathe that needs to find a new home...there are lots of reasons why someone will need to sell for a lot less than you can make the part for ....but you can't put a price the satisfaction get from building it yourself

Dearest Lucias, I am a hobby mechanic enthusiast. I have seen some of your videos, I must say that you are really good and you manage to keep the laboratory clean as only ladies can do. I must tell you however that you have not mentioned Mr. CARLOS EDUARDO who built a perfectly functional and precise jewel only with a quak manual hacksaw, file and a small drill. Then with incredible patience he shared the list of materials and measurements on the net. I also saw all the videos you mentioned; but, for me Carlos remains the No. 1. I wish you all the best. Your fan

@@ginahardee4891 I think that guy had really other intentions than sharing his knowledge with us, Gina ... I searched on YT and even on Google with no success. I really do not understand what is going on in some guys brains. What is the purpose of posting absolutely useless chatter? Well, at least we can laugh about such "smartness" paired with that kind of SIMP-charme, hehehehe. Have a good one and successful making whatever you do in your workshop, Gina!:) Edit: Oh, I really missed that. "Lucias" ... a good start, I guess? It's Lucia ... and "@luciasworkshop" is Lucia's Workshop, Tony! LOL

How good are these home built lathes?
@nealblackburn8628
@nealblackburn8628 5 ай бұрын
That is a difficult question to answer unless you were able to test each one so i don't think you will get a definitive answer . I would think that some would be very good , some just average and some , just ok.... all of them would have something that you could say thats a good idea but building a home made lathe is unlikely to work out as good or as cheap as buying a factory built product ...but the satisfaction you get from the design construction and eventual use of a homemade lathe would be life changing

If you want a lathe that will cut to precision with no chatter or run out there is no way you can build it yourself , even the cheapest manufacturers accept that you can't weld a mild steel bed and expect it to retain accuracy, they tried. All machine tools have to be produced with an accuracy that exceeds what they produce, a crude DIY lathe will only ever produce crude products. Even the cheapest Lathe beds are stable and stress releived cast iron with hardened ways.
