I have been growing a Madagascar Palm for the past 5 years. I take it outside every year from Spring to Fall. It loves the sun's heat and the full light. Mine started with one spiny trunk and now it has a total of 3. The plant does hail from Madagascar but it is not a palm. It belongs to the family Apocynaceae. The name comes from the way it's leaves grow around the trunks in a palm like fashion. When not out in the sun please supplement with grow lights even if it is in a sunny window.

That’s so cool, I just looked up what they look like when they’re big and they’re so epic! 😍 I’ve only ever seen them as babies before. Are you based in the US? Thanks so much for watching, Kathy, I appreciate you 💚

Aw yay I’m so glad! 🥰 I think we sometimes forget how cool our native plants are as well, I always overlooked ferns (cos they grow like weeds here) but recently I’ve begun to appreciate them more 😄

You should try the Purple Flush! I know it as Ruby Necklace. I got a tiny 2” one last November, propagated it just last month and now it’s hanging in a 6” pot in my sunny window. Super happy and beautiful. It’s easy to water because it will start to wrinkle when it’s thirsty.

Ooh amazing I’m glad yours is doing well for you! 😄 every time I’ve seen one in a shop it looks melted on top 🙈 I’ll keep my eye out for a good one so I can give it a go! Maybe the shop owners don’t realise it’s a succulent so they just get drenched?

Agreed! They grow outside in pots over here, turn purple red when they need water green when they don't.

Don’t think I have enough light for most of these plants but would love a monkey tail x

To be fair I didn’t used to either, but then I got some grow lights! Most only cost about 25p or less a day to run and they make such a big difference 😄 I love the monkey tail, would definitely recommend! Thanks so much for watching, Claire 💚 x

I'm growing oxalis and begonia (cane and rex) in full sun, and they seem to love it. Dioscorea discolour seems pretty happy too, although this is my first year with it (it's very thirsty!)

Ooh Oxalis is a good one, I totally forgot about those! 😄 which begonia do you grow in full sun out of interest? That’s amazing, Dioscorea discolour is such a beautiful one 😍 Thanks so much for watching, Emma! 💚

@@buildyourjungle rex begonias, i have Helen Teupel, Lambada, Arctic Breeze, Maori Haze (although looks nothing like it should as it sun stressed deep purple) and a NoID. Cane, I have Maculata & Benigo pink. If space allowed, I'd put them all in south facing - they're just more vibrant there. My pleasure, you have some good content, plus I love hearing a local accent :)

What an amazing collection! 😍 I guess as well full sun for us in the U.K. isn’t as strong as say California so usually (if we don’t have those weird heat waves 🙈) we get a bit more leeway with which species can withstand the direct sun. Aw thank you I appreciate that 💚

idk schlumbergera seems to do just fine growing in the west facing window (east Ukraine) for like 15 years
@buildyourjungle

I agree, an east or west facing window works well for them as they’re not getting the south-facing sun (which is what I’d class as full sun, getting more than 4 hours direct southern sun a day as the main chunk of mid day sun is much more intense) 😄 but also it’s definitely possible to gradually introduce certain plants to a higher light environment, such as sun stressing Hoya

Ooh yes I love the ones with the purple leaves! 😍 there are definitely varieties that can live happily in lower light condition, but they thrive so much in full sun 😄
