Amazing that most of these EXPENSIVE music videos consist of some of the worst CG I've ever seen! lol Most of which were made at the beginning of the new Millennium! Especially when you compare it to CG in films like Jurassic Park, Terminator, with ground-breaking effects which came out nearly 10 years prior. Where the hell did the money go? Not the animators or effects team, from the looks of it. Probably to pay for choreographers, costume designers, backup dancers, lighting, cameras, etc. But for M.J's videos you can see where the money went: To damn good use. 8:45 that was one of the first, state-of-the-art face-morphing effects created, that was still in its fetal stage, yet still holds up 23 years later. And Scream had some CG that wasn't as good, but the sets and effects were amazing.

That's because of the ever changing industry. Once downloading was introduce, artist were making much less money with sells of their album and singles. So less money coming in, less budget to put in music video. Another thing, back in the 80's and 90', any CGI effect cost a lot of money to do since it was coming to the mainstream. Today, everything is made or almost CGI and cost much less than it used to. So they go more with that than actually creating a set or doing a mini movie type of movie cause it cost more to do that than CGI.

Calculating only the labour cost for most videos, would cost more than almost everyones house, thats leaving out the cost of consults, sets, costumes, extras and so forth. Sometimes the catering costs as much as a house.
