GhostbustersFan77 first off, not all in the autistic spectrum are savants. Second, I personally don't like the label because it's almost meaningless considering the diversity within the spectrum. I have Aspergers and the last thing I want is a social justice movement making a big deal out of it. That said, it'd be nice if it wasn't an insult, but I also could care less. I find it rather autistic of myself not to care about such things lol. I think many people in history are likely to have had autistic tendencies. Victimizing ourselves does us no good. Continuing to overachieve does, as it always has.

It’s annoying because autism helps with so many things. The more experience you gain in life, you’ll become smarter than anyone. Yeah my younger brother has autism but he is one of the smartest people I know. When he does his math homework he doesn't need to write anything down. My brother was diagnosed at 2 with autism, he is high functioning but is also on the severe side of the spectrum. He was diagnosed the same year I was born. Boy were my parents in for a surprise when I got taken in and diagnosed with not only depressive bipolar disorder but also Aspergers Syndrome. But both my brother and I don’t let our disorders hold us back. My brother, Alex wants to become a plane mechanic one day and I’m on my way to publishing my first book. Both Alex and I will always be there for each other and will always help each other out when times get tough. He’s my best friend and I couldn’t ask for a better brother.

Asperger persons are unique like everyone and do some things better and other things worst than neurotypical people in general. Almost all of they have some other mental ilnesess and they usually have good visual perception. They are not all intelligent, but they can focus better than neurotypical people in their interets, and less in other stuff, with better perfomance. But there is a really big connection of Autism Spectrum and high intelligence, and that's why a lot of Asperger persons have high intelligence and a lot of intelligent people has Autism traits (not necessarily Asperger's Syndrome, because you can have only some traits, that indicates that you probably have Autism genes).

I never knew Dan Aykroyd had Asperger's. A couple of years ago I appeared in a movie made and written by a guy with Asperger's. Dan Aykroyd is an inspiration, as a writer and a performer. I am 64 and was only diagnosed 7 years ago. Most of my life it hadn't even been identified as a disorder yet. It's been a hard row to hoe all alone with zero understanding or support from anyone, only criticism, rejection, etc. It was a relief to realize what the problem is and learn to accept myself. I am now 61, was never diagnosed in the early/mid 60s, I know now that my growing up was all about. My parents both knew something was different, but we took it in our stride. Here is a glimpse of my growing 'pains' i crawled till i was 2, suddenly stood and walked. From early in primary school, i developed a reclusive/rejection attitude, did not make friends easy, went through primary with one best friend, another david. Had severe 'phase outs - staying awake but mind is miles away, mums voice was sounding like echo in the distance, maybe 5 min long. Was dead scared in a restaurant to get up from my chair to go to the loo. Stuttered on nearly every third word, including my own name. Butt of jokes at school. both levels. Couldnt throw an overhead ball, as in cricket fielding. threw under arm further.!!! My one love was creativity. Art, woodwork, sculpting in clay, at 15 (74) it was turned to doing my own oil painting with Hobbytex (oil paint filled ball point tubes) an aussie company, through transitioning between primary and secondary, i had speech lessons, for a th 'problem' all this i lived through. grew out of the reclusiveness, and stuttering, and fear of people, my creativity is immense, except not learning stuff that is usually designated as female craft, (knitting, crochet, and sewing). Building a shed form my imagination, no written plans.

When I was a little kid, no one in my little rural town had heard of Asperger Syndrome. I wish someone would have told the people who were testing me for special education because I was slow. As it turned out, I was incredibly intelligent; I just couldn't find the words to say that my brain was processing things so fast that my physical self couldn't keep up. As an Aspie adult, I cannot thank you enough ! I am great at crochet and knitting but suck at being the center of attention. I am great at cooking, being a mom, but suck at being around kids. I was told, back in the mid-70's, to hide my autism,as it may have gotten me institutionalized.So I did. Even today I can hide it fairly well. But it is a struggle. I was diagnosed about 5 years ago (I’m 45) and it changed me for the better. I’m a special effects artist for film and a multi media artist. I became so much more focused and a lot better at my craft with this new found confidence. The comedian Hanna Gadsby said it best about being diagnosed. Susan Boyle inspires me! I too am on the spectrum ( I have Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not otherwise specified) but when I was almost two years old I was diagnosed with severe autism, severe mental retardation, and speech delay. I like acting because I know exactly what to do, what to feel, how someone is going to react, and I get to experience empathy in a safe way. I also like books for the same reason. I've struggled my entire childhood due to people not understanding that my issues (neurological difficulties with balance, sounds, smells, light, textures) were due to a condition, not me being a difficult or lazy child. Now I struggle as an adult with prejudice. I was diagnosed in my late 20's, and whilst I myself had an eyeopener with the diagnosis, I've stopped sharing it with others. You distinctly see people change how they act once they know that you're different. I especially dislike it when they try to diminish and refer to it as some sort of "trendy diagnosis". +Tav McIntyre It's possible that to understand HFA, you first need to understand what isn't HFA. My nephew stares at walls, can't communicate because he is overwhelmed by the constant sensory data. (It's always too loud, too bright, too everything, and he just can't deal with it easily.) Many autistic people can find that they have something they are good at, if it can be discovered. HFA has an easier time to filter the constant sensory data. I do say easier because it can still overwhelm, and often does so when it's very inconvenient. HFA also usually have a skill they excel at, but as Dr Temple Grandin explains, we often have some area in our life that is more difficult for us to assume. (I hesitate to use the word understand because we might understand it very well, though be unable to practice what we know.)

Wow, this is amazing! :) I actually have Asperger's, too, but I wasn't told about it until 8 yrs ago (I honestly don't know why I wasn't told sooner, but it might've been because I was dealing with a lot of pressure after Hurricane Katrina and my mom having to move to where her job was relocated. It was hell for me, because not only did I lose my grandmother to cancer during that year, but I had to move away from my childhood home - where I grew up for most of my life...). Unless I'm surrounded by friends or family, I don't feel comfortable talking or interacting with people I don't know, but I have noticed other quirks about me that are related to Asperger's in general; I'm just happy that I'm not the only one dealing with this and that I'm not alone! :)

I really think Albert Einstein was autistic, but he died before there was a diagnosis for such a thing, so nobody can know. Tom Cruise has dyslexia, but I seriously doubt that he has autism.

Asperger persons are unique like everyone and do some things better and other things worst than neurotypical people in general. Almost all of they have some other mental ilnesess and they usually have good visual perception. They are not all intelligent, but they can focus better than neurotypical people in their interets, and less in other stuff, with better perfomance. But there is a really big connection of Autism Spectrum and high intelligence, and that's why a lot of Asperger persons have high intelligence and a lot of intelligent people has Autism traits (not necessarily Asperger's Syndrome, because you can have only some traits, that indicates that you probably have Autism genes).

Temple Grandin definitely inspires me. The kiddos I teach at my school who all have autism inspire me every day. They are amazing human beings and I love that I get to see their growth and watch them learn.

+MISTAKEWASMADE4live I could see that. I feel that I have great artistic ability, but I don't necessarily like to brag about it. Rather, I just want to continue practicing and get better. Throughout my time during high school and college, I've had lower self esteem. I've had difficulty dating and felt that I wasn't attractive. Lately, I've gained more confidence in myself, but still have some difficulty in social situations. Do you find that autistic personalities attract narcissistic personalities? I've had several former friends who were narcissistic.
