@@Troll-ty6ef the Swedish language didn't take that many other words. 90% of the Swedish language consists by only Swedish words and the Icelandic language stems from the Old Norse but isn't that similar. Swedish, Danish, Norweigan and Icelandic is the decendents from the Old Norse language. And the Swedish and Icelandic languages is the closest to the old norse language. The Swedish language contains many of the letters of the old Norse language. The Icelandic language does only sound similar but other than that, it's hard to pinpoint a real language that comes closer than the current nordic countries. Then there's the fact that most of the speakers of Old Norse lives in Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

You said that there are no native speakers of Latin and that is totally correct. However, Latin isn' t a dead language if you consider that it is the Vatican' s official language and the Vatican is a country. Therefore depending on the meaning you give to "Dead Language" you can consider Latin a dead or a alive language.👍

I have a question. Can you understand Ancient Greek as easily as Contemporary Greek or do you have a little more difficulty understanding it. I believe that, like English, it has evolved to the point that ancient Greek has become a dead language. Kind of like how we Contemporary English speakers cannot understand almost any Old English or have such a hard time understanding Middle English. Heck, even Shakespeare English (Moden English) is hard to understand oftentimes.

As an Australian born Greek who has lived and still lives in Greece for the most part, I would like to see Ancient Greek become the second language of Greece. Much like the Canadians have English as their prime language, yet also have French in terms of almost always including it on say boxes and or other goods that has English on top and French underneath it, I would like to see modern Greek as we use it today and Ancient Greek underneath it. At one stage in the 40's 50's and such right up until a certain point, it was still being taught at school. Would be nice to see if it could be kept alive.

Both Coptic and Aramaic are still in use, and both have over a million speakers worldwide. Middle English didn't disappear, as much as it changed slowly into Modern English. Same goes for Ancient Greek, which is still intelligible with Modern Greek.
@kinjoko
@kinjoko 10 ай бұрын
As a Greek person living in Greece, Ancient Greek is in fact not intelligible with Modern Greek, to the point that Ancient Greek as a subject at school is one of the most hated subjects in the Greek education system, with 99% of students wanting it to be removed from the curriculum. Yes, some words have remained the same and other are similar, the two languages are very distant, especially grammar-wise.
@SirPerceval
@SirPerceval 10 ай бұрын
@@kinjoko Well, that's pretty sad. The Greek civilization is literally the oldest and richest European civilization that we have written record of, while the Greek philosophy serves as the basis for most of European civilizations. Having the possibility to study ancient Greek (or Latin) and passing on it it's quite sad, coming from someone who never had this chance in school. But I am curious tho, how comes that the Modern Greek is no longer intelligible with Ancient Greek? How did it change so much, or what happened?
@kinjoko
@kinjoko 10 ай бұрын
@@SirPerceval To be honest, I myself am not really sure. The only reasons I can think of are the following. First, after 400 years of Ottoman rule, a lot of Turkish words entered Greek but I doubt that's an actual reason since a lot of these borrowings have fallen out of use in favour of native Greek ones. But we still have some that are so deeply rooted that most Greeks don't know the actual Greek equivalents for example καρπούζι (karpúzi, watermelon), most Greeks don't know that the actual Greek word is χειμωνικό (himonikó). Second, a lot of features of Ancient Greek no longer exist in modern Greek e.g. a lot of vowels shifted to /i/ (this is called iotacism), the dative case and dual number were completely dropped etc. Third, a lot of words' meaning changed. For example, the word φρένα (fréna) now refers to the breaks in a car or a bicycle, but in Ancient Greek it meant the brain. But that's probably not a great example since we still use the expression έχει σώα τα φρένα (éhi sóa ta fréna) which means: he has his brains "saved" (healthy) but I think you get what I mean. But in the end of the day, it's been around 2500 years since Attic Greek was spoken (Attic Greek is the dialect taught at schools) and after so much time the language is guaranteed to be different. A little bit more info about Ancient Greek and the education system. We start learning Ancient Greek at 7th grade and it is compulsory until 11th grade. But before you go to 11th grade, you get to select between 2 "subject courses". One of them is focused on literature, Ancient Greek, Latin and history and the second one is focused on chemistry, math, physics etc. When you select the second one, the Ancient Greek lessons are less frequent and less intense than those in the thirst course. Also, some reasons why I think kids are uninterested in Ancient Greek. First of all, I'll have to admit, I'm also not interested at all in Ancient Greek. Every semester my worst performing subject was always Ancient Greek (now back to the main topic). In Greece (as in all of the Balkans) there is a lot of corruption, so people are just trying to survive, they prioritize other subjects that are more likely to bring food to the table rather that wanting to cultivate their way of thinking. A recent study shows that 73% of people aged 18-34 in Greece still live with their parents. Usually people move out then they get married. Also, something personal but, after seeing how life is in more developed nations through social media and talking to people who have left Greece to work abroad, I kinda feel betrayed by my country. Everything is going downhill and rarely you see actual progress in anything. As I'm still a student, I care about the education system which is just ruins at this point. Every kid in high school takes extra after-school classes (no matter how good they are). Not because the lessons are hard but because they are low quality and at the end of school, when you take the final test (essentially uni entrance exams), you are against every other student in order to secure a place at the uni you want to attend. It's basically war. One of my dreams is to one day manage to move abroad to a developed country like Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands etc and that says a lot about how much I enjoy life here. But also, I'm not really interested in Greek culture in order to have something to keep me into the country, I'm more interested in foreign stuff.

Latin still existing and never died. When Roma collapsed, some provinces of Rome had been taken independence. And some dialects of Latin become some other languages but base on Latin language, such as Franch, Spanish, Italian, Romanian and some other languages of Latin-Romance. English also adopted a strong influence with the Latin language. The origin of numerous English vocabulary is from Latin, although English belongs Germanic language family. For example, The "hear" in English is from the ancient Germanic language "hauzjan", in German is horen. But almost all of the vocabularies concern the meaning of "hear" in English is with the root of audi. Such as: audience audient audio audible audit audiovisual, "audi" is from Latin language and means "hear". Another example: The "say" in English also from the ancient Germanic language, "sagjanan".In German it is "sagen", but most of the vocabularies concern the meaning of "say" in English is "dict", like "dicta", "diction", "dictate", "predict". In Latin language, "dict" means "lecture", and "dicere" is the none of "lecture" or the similar mean with "speech". So Latin still alive, use around us and with us in our daily life. By the way, I'm a Chinese, I can't imagine that if our civilization without the hieroglyphic of our writing system. Thanks to the 1st emperor of China who makes the writing system under unification. If we use alphabets for writing, it doesn't exclude that we will never unify as one-big-country due to the different pronunciations of several dialects in the Chinese language. Maybe, most of the dialects in China will become varied languages.

Ancient Egyptian language became what we call now "Coptic language". It was used in Egypt until 1600s until Arabic language dominated and became the language used by both Muslim and Christian Egyptians. The Hieroglyphics on the Rosetta stone were deciphered thanks to the Coptic language, allowing us to finally understand ancient Egyptian history.

Saying Latin died is like saying English died because nobody talks and writes like the original creators of the Beowulf story. Latin didn't die. It merely changed in different ways over the millennia due partly to some areas being more isolated than others and also due partly to speakers in different areas being influenced by other nearby languages.

If its been continued to be used until the late 20th century in a diminished capacity... it STILL has people taught in how its spoken... a dead language is one to not been heard aloud and forgotten. I hate how Latin is considered a dead language when CLEARLY people know how to pronounce it
@JamesDavy2009
@JamesDavy2009 5 жыл бұрын
Although few can pronounce it _correctly._ The letter "C" was always pronounced in its hardened form; Julius Caesar was pronounced "Yulius Kaiser" (The letter "J" didn't exist in Latin); the letter "V" was pronounced like our letter "W", meaning our aforementioned Caesar said "Weni, Widi, Wiki." All that and more as stated on _QI._

In my opinion, the vid should not be named “dead languages”. Some of the languages mentioned here are not dead, they are the periods of evolution of a certain language (for instance, Middle English - modern English, Ancient Greek - modern Greek etc). It is incorrect to mention them here. Why the gothic language is not mentioned, Sumerian etc. They are important ones and actually dead. Someone has not studied linguistics well.

I am Egyptian and there are some incorrect common thoughts about Coptic which are sadly in the video as well ..Some think Coptic is still used in the Alexandrian Coptic church which isn't accurate actually ,this is more Greek or Ancient Greek ..In Fact many will be surprised to know that Coptic was sort of "mashed"with Egyptian Arabic , most of its Grammar like the double negative ,question word at the end of the question , using index words after the word ..etc has nothing to do with Arabic language ,add to this a LOT of vocabulary .
