Reminder: Current day Harvest Moon is more or less just Natsume trying to cash in on the name recognition after Marvelous stopped using them as a publisher in the US. The "proper" Harvest Moon games are called Story of Seasons these days.

Yes, and if anyone wants to know: it's easier to find them if you look for "Boku Mono" (short for the Japanese name Bokujo Monogatari). The last Boku Mono game called Harvest Moon was A New Beginning

I've told this story before, but I'll tell it again. Back when I played the first Sims game, I hated waiting for my character to come home from work. So I created 2 "main" characters, and two "work" characters. The workers slept outside in a fenced area with no bed, toilet, fridge, or anything. I only fed them when I had to. While they worked I had fun leveling my main characters. For some reason, it never occurred to me back then that I was simulating slavery lol.

In Sims 3 Pets, I enslaved all my cats. They had to hunt so my sim could live his wildest dreams. After realizing what I did, I stop playing sims and haven't played since.

When I first saw Fantasy Life at my local gamestore years ago I actually didn't buy it because it looked too good to be true. It was everything I was looking for in a game and I figured it couldn't possibly be that. Then a few years later my boyfriend at the time bought it for me as a surprise and I fell in love with it, I couldn't believe how good it was. One of my favourite games of all time hands-down.

As somebody who usually doesnt like life sims: Fantasy life definitly is that one exception for me. I played 100s off hours in it and I dont understand why. When I look at it I think why do I enjoy it so much. But just typing this still gives me the itch to pick it up and not sleep tonight and play fantasy life instead. And thats from somebody who doesnt enjoy games like stardew, harvest moon or animal crossing.

I played the first two when they came out, but to me they just felt like they didn't improve on anything the old HM games did. No big new features, stock characters with new faces, nothing innovative. I honestly don't think they hold a candle to Stardew Valley. Of course the new ones might be different, but I don't feel like trying those anymore. FUUUUUUCK all of the new HM games though.

I was thinking the same. Even if he thinks that the Story of Seasons games are not as good as the old ones, it is a bit unfair to compare them to the Natsume games that are really lackluster and say that the whole franchise is bad nowadays. Marvelous still does amazing farming games but largely gets ignored when discussing Harvest Moon. Maybe Pioneers of Olive Town will change that as it is the first HM/SoS non-handheld game in a long time. I am really looking forward to it.

​@@kuchenjaeger2164 I wouldn't say Stardew Valley is particularly innovative either, honestly mechanically I'd call it worse than your average Harvest Moon game too (real Harvest Moon, not the fake ones developed by Natsume.) The main big advantage it has is multiplayer and a bit more direct farmland layout customization. But at the same time I can't help but find it feels dated to actually play in some regards, like you can tell the developer liked Back to Nature the best, because Stardew takes a lot of of queues from that game, even the stuff that's pretty tedious and unfun (especially early on.) It's also a little disappointing that Stardew Valley only has like 5 Marriage Couples of each sex and despite the loads of updates it got they never added any others (it doesn't help that most of the male options are meh,) ditto for not having any kind of real child aging beyond the toddler stage, which is something newer Harvest Moon games expanded beyond. But at the same time, I mean there hasn't been a full on Story of Seasons game since the 3DS, not counting the remake of Mineral Town either, (which played it very faithfully for better or worse,) so we haven't gotten a proper console level Harvest Moon since... Animal Parade (which is actually among the best in the series too.)

Great video! Loved seeing the footage from different versions of The Sims. I’ve played all of them over the years and it was a huge nostalgia trip. I watched the Arthur stream and legit thought I was going to pee myself laughing. The full video is on his twitch channel and I highly recommend it.

I do hear good things about Rune Factory but for me I like my life simulators just about life. I don't want it to mix in RPG elements. Hence why Harvest Moon or now Story of Seasons will always be my number one. :) also the only Sims I ever got into were My Sims.

It makes me so genuinely happy to see Spiritfarer getting some love! It's not at all what I was expecting going in blind but it ended up being one of the most gut-wrenchingly beautiful pieces of media I've experienced in years. I can't think of any other game I've played that has made me cry multiple times before the end credits. It's not for everyone but if you're a fan of the genre and you're comfortable exploring heavy themes of grief and depression, please buy it and play it now.

My Time in Portia is a fairly good life sim, if a bit rough around the edges. It’s based more around construction than farming, and I like that there’s several commissions that improve the town. There’s a sequel in the works, My Time in Sandrock. And they’re dumping the company who did the console ports, so hopefully it’ll actually be playable at launch. XD

I highly recommend Littlewood to anyone who likes stardew valley. It is a very fun farming sim, but you get to build a whole town instead of just the farm, and you get to decorate all your townsfolks houses it is really good and I highly reccomend it.

Shout out to the frequent fixes and huge FREE updates SD gets. Everytime he does another big update it's like getting another FREE game. Last one got me playing for days, and a new one is rolling out right now! Plus he's so in tune with his community, but in a healthy professional way. He fixes bugs and issues, he listens for ways to improve the mechanics and then actually does them. He finds out what people like and then improves that content. Most amazing, he works *with* the modding community, always trying his darndest to make sure most of them can still work with each update. He supports them instead of trying to block them It's a far cry from most creators you see at the top of these top ten lists. He doesn't pretend to love his game and his players, he doesn't even try to promote it. He just DOES and he proves it by action

Since I've been made aware of PBG already knowing this, here's a brief history of The Decline of the Harvest Moon Series for those who may not know; So the Harvest Moon games you know and love (Back to Nature, Friends of Mineral Town, etc.) are known as Bokujō Monogatari in Japan, developed by Marvelous Games and, until 2012, localized in North America by Natsume. In 2012, Marvelous Games discontinued licensing the series to Natsume in favor of XSeed Games (who are famous for localizing the Rune Factory series for North America). Natsume still has the rights to the Harvest Moon name though, and as a result started creating their own "Harvest Moon" games that are NOT the beloved Bokujō Monogatari franchise. It was a whole thing that causes confusion to this very day and it's been almost 10 years! If you're looking for the REAL Bokujō Monogatari games, XSeed localizes them under the name "Story of Seasons" - the first one having been released in March 2015 and the most recent entry being a Friends of Mineral Town remake, Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town that was released in July of 2020. The Bokujō Monogatari games are still around and THRIVING, they're just not called Harvest Moon anymore. PS: Peebs, please do a Rune Factory Frontier video, I *need* to hear you yell about the Runeys

He mentioned this briefly in the Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town remake video he did. But yeah a lot of people didn't know this. In fact I'm pretty sure that's WHY they decided to do a Mineral Town remake as the first Switch title, it's probably the most well known title in the series and remaking it allows awareness to be spread about the fact that Harvest Moon goes by a different name now.

i had never played stardew valley until literally yesterday bc my fiancé had been nagging me about it for ages so eventually i gave it a go. i always avoided it because on the outside i thought it was like, a kids game about farming but when i actually started playing it, and i played for over 12 hours in a row, and shane drops a goddamn bombshell on me, it’s safe to say i’m hooked. it’s such a good game.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say this is one of the best life sim games, but it has helped me destress a lot recently. I’ve recently gotten my first job and also currently working on graduating high school so to just relax and vibe I’ve been playing cattails a lot recently. It’s like stardew valley but you vibe as a cat and there’s gang wars. What else do I need to say.
