I am interested in the list, but what needs to really be reprinted--just to save the material--are all of the booklets and comb-bound books (as well as the short run periodicals) put out by Karl Fulves. This is some of the best material in magic and it was published in formats that both had limited distribution and are prone to be easy to damage. A bound multi-volume set of Fulves is desperately needed, if only for archival and historical purposes. If I had the rights and all of the Fulves material (I think I have only about half), I would find a way to do it myself. Beyond that, the Vernon Books by Ganson (and the Vernon Chronicles series) that were last published by L&L should never be allowed to go out of print again. The Elmsley set from L&L. Goldstein's Lisp series. Pure Effect and Absolute Magic by Derren Brown. The Secrets of Bro. John Hamman by Kaufman. Williamson's Wonders by Kaufman. Complete Works of Derek Dingle by Kaufman, Lifesavers by Weber, Totally Out of Control by Kenner. Some of the Miracle Factory stuff like Art and Magic, Neo-Magic Artistry, and Benson by Starlight. The Card Magic of Nick Trost. The Barrie Richardson Trilogy (Theater of the Mind appears to gone already). I believe Drawing Room Deceptions is unavailable although it may be reprinted. The Ramsay Trilogy by Galloway. The Nash Trilogy by Minch. Eric Lewis' Crown Trilogy. Mind and Magic of David Berglas. The Berglas Effect by Kaufman and Showtime at the Tom-Foolery by Kaufman

As always, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing your list. I also enjoyed reading the suggestions of other viewers (and the readers of MBA). I would agree with nearly all of your list and the others additions. I have been extremely fortunate over the years in my purchases as I own every book in your list and those suggested by others. The only exception is that although I own a lot of Karl Fulves' books, I don't own all of them. I was very fortunate to actually spend an afternoon with Nick Trost and Al Thatcher on March 5, 1999. I was on my way to Akron for a hot air balloon safety seminar and I contacted Mr. Thatcher about visiting him on my way and asked if there might be other magicians I could also meet. He said he'd invite Mr. Trost over. It was an amazing afternoon spent with two amazing and wonderful magicians. I was able to have Mr. Trost autographed several of his books/booklets including The Card Magic of Nick Trost (1997). I missed my one chance to meet Ted Lesley. He lectured in Kansas City near Thanksgiving some years ago and I wanted to go, but I didn't want to make the 2-hour drive by myself. I've regretted that decision ever since. What would I add to the list? Although I own copies, I think Stewart James in Print: The First Fifty Years (1989) and The James Files (2000) should be reprinted. The Marlo Magazines in hardcover would be great. James Biss's Messing with Minds (2005) and Mind Blowing Menatlism (2008) might be nice to see reprinted.. However, Biss has become a controversial figure in magic. Hardcovers of these two book are hard to find. Messing with Minds was released as a numbered edition of 333 and Mind Blowing Mentalism was released as a numbered edition of 666. Both had paperback releases. He originally was going to write a third book, but criminal and legal issues sidetracked him. At the time the books were released, they were acclaimed. I don't know where they stand these days. Seeing some of the L&L books reprinted would be nice, especially Annemann: The Life and Times of a Legend compiled with commentary by Max Abrams (1992)

I haven't been a big fan of Jay Sankey's over the years, but his Vanishing Inc. Trilogy is DEFINITELY his best material. You don't have to sift through the other stuff to find the good stuff; it's all in this trilogy. Andi Gladwin has hinted that it may be reprinted in the near future.

Indeed he [Andi] has. I think the big knock on Sankey is also his biggest strength: continuous output. When you continually put things out, you're bound to have some dogs along with the winners. But the set has too much value to stay OOP...

Got Pureffect last year. I wasn't that impressed with it. Mainly because it is all card tricks. I was looking for his thoughts and ideas concerning mentalism, sadly they are not to be found in that book. I eventually stumbled upon a book from another author from that era that is certainly a book Derren must have studied. It is also out of print, and super hard to find. I will give Pureffect another try though. The card tricks are quite brilliant. I recently stumbled across a video on KZbin from a VHS tape of him demonstrating most of the tricks in that book. Very inspiring.

Did some research on why Pure Effect and Absolute Magic were pulled, and it turns out that it's because Derren Brown was uncomfortable with fans tracking down his earlier work and buying it as laymen. He noticed that a strangely large amount of his lay fans had bought Pure Effect or Absolute Magic, and so before he published his more "layman friendly" works like Trick of The Mind and Confessions Of A Conjuror, he asked H&R to pull the two previous works as not to violate the boundaries between latpeople and working magicians.

I have a copy of Pure Effect and the other one, the name of which escapes me for the moment. What's striking about those early Derren Brown books is how young he must have been when he wrote them -- in many ways, they read like obvious juvenalia -- filled with rebellious dirty jokes and hat tips to Jerry Sadowitz. Yet at the same time, he appears to have had a close (correspondance) relationship with Teller. I'm sure both of those books pre-date his mentalist TV fame, yet he was clearly a deep thinker on the subject of magic -- hugely sophisticated for somebody so young -- and appears to have impressed all manner of much older, much more experienced magicians. Books like Pure Effect are really at the very heart of what I love about magic books, displaying a passion for scholarship and theory that in some sense is about as far removed from the $15 packet trick as you could hope to be, and yet at the same time, acknowledging the very close connection to the world of the Svengali Deck and others of it's ilk. I'd really like a copy of Greater Magic. I know it's not rare, but I've yet to come across a decent copy. As ever, Kaufman will do a wonderful job with the reprint -- but I'd love to see an el-cheapo Dover edition that made it available to anyone with $15 or $20 in their pocket.

It absolutely would, but I don’t see it happening. Kaufman has explained that the rights situation is quite dicey, as the Warren estate is a complicated, not-entirely-harmonious collection of separate entities.

How fun when the rights holders are so caught up in profiting from their ancestor's work that they don't make any money (because can't get along to see it published). Glad Kaufman secured the rights that he did - looking forward to seeing the final product

Our founders viewed what we now call “intellectual property”, that is, the ability to be the exclusive source fits distributing or disposing of one’s creation, as not really a natural right. So the constitution gives government the power to grant creators a monopoly on the distribution of their creations on the premise that that grant of license would benefit society, and would only be granted for a limited time. Now that rightsholders who are often not creators have hacked the laws in their favor, copyrights can be extended indefinitely and properties can be withheld instead of made available, in direct contravention of the founders idea. In my opinion, it should be the case that you use your copyright or lose it, and that copyrights should not exist in perpetuity.

Scams & Fantasies by Darwin Ortiz has been out of print for a while - so annoying!!! The grainy PDF copies out there do not do it justice. Hopefully this comes back into print soon. Love your channel!

I got it when it was reprinted the first time. Bernstein is a great thinker, but I'm not sure how much he performed. 🤷🏻 Some of the ideas read better than I think they would play. Nevertheless, I've learned from it and will perform his material in the future. There's also a lot of diversity in the material

I believe they sold a lot of their back stock in an effort to pare down. Don bought a good bit of that, so maybe he'll share more. They are not out of business, though. They republished the Trost Subtle Card Creations Book 1 this past year, as well as a second edition of Lewis Jones's Seventh Heaven. And, they are publishing the 9th (and final!) book in the Trost series in early 2023.

Since I got into magic in late 2012 I’ve wanted a copy of “Greater Magic”! I was very lucky to purchase a digital version of the “Card Magic of Nick Trost” for a few dollars from an LLePub sale a few years back. (I got all the Vernon books, Carney, Jennings, and more when they would have sales. I don’t mind digital at all). I really, really hope they reprint Johnny Thompson’s book. His “Commercial Classics of Magic” series is one of my got-to’s and I’ll treasure both volumes of his book for a long time. I didn’t know that “The Definitive Sankey” was formatted like that! That’s awesome!

I spoke to Andi Gladwin about a month ago re the Sankey books. He did not know if or when they would be republished. He said that it would cost £100,000.00 to get ready to republish and I don’t think that VI could take this risk. Contact VI if you want them to be republished.

Absolute Magic is the source of one of my favorite quotes - “ There are many tricks, and many effects, but rarely a Grand Effect. There are many entertainers, but few real magicians. Many technicians, but few artists who use their art to explore their vision.”

Meh.? 🤷🏻😄 I have them, but feel like they're not an invaluable resource, and certainly not the exclusive place to learn Vernon material. His best magic is printed far and wide in any number of resources: Stars of Magic, Greater Magic, Jinx, etc., or in a newer book with a better version of his original. There's got to be a downside to being called "the Professor," and it looks like his will be falling just outside my top 10 for reprints. 😉

I have the Dingle book. I don’t find it that impressive. There’s a fun Ace assembly at the end that uses a bunch of extra cards, but Kaufman says it was specifically designed to fool magicians and would be wasted on laymen.

Personally, i’m not sure I buy the “there isn’t enough of a demand” thing. But I don’t see the behind the scenes, so maybe im wrong. I’m sure I am wrong. But to me, especially with the big companies like Vanishing Inc, Murphys who now owns L&L, and penguin who owns Hermetic, I just don’t see the issue with reprinting the old classics. I mean it’s been long enough since Bannons books went out of print, that there’s now a new generation of magicians who are missing out on that material. it only makes sense to reprint them. I really do hope the sankey books get reprinted. and maybe even include a 4th volume since Jay now has more material since it’s release.

I think it's more complex than that. The book market is a niche within a niche. It's far easier than you think to incur costs that you won't recoup, especially on something that already took a while to sell out the first time. Anyway, there will be a lot more books coming in the future (both old and new)!

To me, and i’m sure to others, it seems as easy as flicking a switch and the printers in the back of the warehouse print away. Obviously we know that isn’t the case.. maybe that could be a good idea for a video. especially since you with with VI now, maybe a behind the curtain look into how these books are made and the decisions behind them

How about The Doors of Deception by Paul Vigil. Also I'd like your opinion on digital magazines and not being able to download them. I understand it is because the publisher is afraid of us sharing digital copies, but I can read and give away a printed copy just as easy. We should be able to keep what we buy digitally. I don't have any Paul Vigil books. 🤷🏻 For better or worse, it seems like the trend with digital. The world has moved away from physical ownership, and most people are comfortable paying for a subscription to access their purchases. I agree that if you are buying something outright, you should be able to download it. Out of curiosity, what's the magazine?

@@EruditeMagic I was buying books from a guy a couple months ago and he mentioned some books he was putting up for sale soon. Darren Brown being one of them. I didn't even bother to ask him the price cause I didn't have the budget for any big purchases. He put it up for sale publicly for like $40-50. Thanks for the great video, Jeff! I take the chance to ask one question, maybe you or someone else here knows the answer - is Simon Aronson's "Simply Simon" still in print? It is out of stock on all online dealers that I have checked. Vanishing Inc. support says that it might be discontinued (even though the product page lists it simply as out of stock). Thanks!

No problem. By definition, it's OOP if you can't get it at the manufacturer. It may get harder to find his works now that he's passed. I think he printed them himself for the most part. Hope you can find a copy!

@@EruditeMagic Yes, that's actually the point - it is not clear (at least to me) if it is still possible to get it at the manufacturer. It is still possible to send a Paypal payment on Simon Aronson's website, but it is not evident (again, to me) if the site is still maintained after he passed away. I have sent an email to address listed under "contacts" a couple of weeks ago but have got no reply at the moment. Anyway, Aronson's books are such big classics that I hope this will become available again soon! 🤞

Copyright laws are problematic. It is criminal for publishers to restrict access to books on the basis of profit, given publishers did not write the books. Exorbitant prices, while giving advantage to first buyers, are not the solution either. So we are stuck with a failed market - rife with shortages and piracy.

Every publisher is taking a gamble on the initial demand, which can be unpredictable - tough to know 🤷🏻

That’s an interesting book. Fisher is kind of full of himself, but beneath the bluster is some good stuff. There’s a refinement of Marlo’s “No-Clutch Bottom Placement” that’s not very difficult and can be useful.

@@EruditeMagic I've had that book for a long time and never used any of it. Every once in a while I sit down to try to learn his half pass again. I appreciate that the description is detailed...but it may be a little too detailed? I'll eventually put in the time to get it down, as I don't have a solid half pass in my arsenal, but I'm not quite sure it's as revolutionary as he claims it to be...

I find it odd, and misleading, when people refer to Out of Print books as being "unavailable." They're not. All of these books can be acquired, you just have to pay what they're worth. An alternate title for this video could be "Books that I wish were cheaper." Supply and demand. It's capitalism at its finest.
