Raging Bull and Taxi Driver both have much more depth and complexities in their character. Sir_Lime_Wire - I agree, to me it's right next to Taxi Driver as his top two films, it's absolutely one of my favorite films ever. So lyrical, that amazing coverage, sound design and music choices... the language of his storytelling was never stronger. The cast was incredible. It's a great script as well, although I'm aware there is some scandal associated with that aspect of the film.

PhysioA I can understand if you call De Niro's character in the Godfather part 2 a side character (Al Pacino really carries that film), but how is his character in Once upon a time in america a side character? And I might have misunderstood your comment, but I thought you talked about the BEST De Niro FILMS, not performances. For example: De Niro is better in Casino than in Goodfellas but I think Goodellas is a better film. Or Brazil is a better film than Silver Linings Playbook even though he only appears on screen for like 5 minutes playing a fucking plummer. Any film in which De Niro plays an important character should be considered as a contender for best De Niro film, even if he isn't the lead. But whatever, De Niro is the greatest.

We all know Martin Scorsese is the best of the best when it comes to gangster movies. Goodfellas is in it's rightful place at #1 But Shutter Island is one of the best movies I've ever seen and should be on the list. I'm a very logical thinker and I can usually see plot twists from a mile away. Shutter Island was the only movie that had me completely in aw by the end still trying to piece things together. Loved it!

Mean Streets is his greatest masterpiece IMO. Nothing beats the Keitel/De Niro dynamic. not to mention the groundbreaking soundtrack and cinematography

Wow you guys totally got the analysis of Taxi driver wrong. Its about a lonely man’s descent into madness as he realizes he cant make meaningful or real connections with the people around him. This sub-conscious realization drives him into crippling anguish and denial and egotism to prevent him from finding out whats wrong with him and how he can change. WM missed the mark with this one.

Really good list, but I'll never get the love for Mean Streets. I think it's one of his more overrated films and I think Casino (unfairly criticized as "Goodfellas in Vegas") is Scorsese's most underrated gangster flick. The story of Mean Streets was pretty much non-existent, the character development uninteresting, the direction and cinematography a bit messy and some of the characters were really annoying (De Niro's Johnny Boy character) which made it hard to care for them, but I'll probably need to watch Mean Streets again. Good call on King of Comedy, though. Truly a masterpiece.

Taxi Driver should have been number 1. It is a beautiful work of art depicting a man’s own insanity while the world around him slowly pushes him more. It has remarkable acting, a compelling and horrific storyline. And it is without a doubt one of the best movies of all time.

I'll defend Goodfellas for the #1 spot, although I absolutely love a lot of Scorsese's films. I think GF is superior to the others in how extraordinarily well it showcases Scorsese's ability to tell a story. There are so many elements with so many details working off of eachother to create impressions and atmosphere. The camerawork, the music, the sound, the narration, the ambiance, the editing - it's fascinating to watch Goodfellas focusing on any one of those elements to see how Scorsese is using every facet of the cinematic medium to tell this story. So many people focus on how much they like the story element of a movie, and while it's extremely important to have a good story, I think when you're judging which movie is Scorsese's best as a director, you need to focus more on how the story is told. And in my opinion, Goodfellas, and also Raging Bull, showcase Scorsese's talent for storytelling more than his other work.
