I really loved seeing the museums in Vienna. I thought the museum in the Winter Palace was lovely too with the nights armor. Art museum has a really noisy wooden floor, doesn't it? Pretty cool memories.

Hi Jo! First of all, thank you for your feedback. All polite criticism is welcome. Some questions for you, first, where are you from? Second, you are aware that in English we often pronounce things differently than in the original language right? For example, we say Christopher Columbus, not cristoforo Colombo or Cristobal colon. So if we can agree that names are pronounced (and sometimes even spelled) differently in different languages, then I would be happy to hear what you believe is the ENGLISH pronunciation of Jan Steen. All languages do this. In German, you say Frankreich, not France. And you do not pronounce California when speaking German the same way I do. You pronounce it with the German phonetic system. Vowel sounds commonly change when language changes, for place names and notable people’s names especially. There is no rule that says people have to mimic the native pronunciation of things. If that was the case I wouldn’t even say Vienna. I would say “Veeeen”.

I just checked, in English the pronunciation would in fact be “Yan”, the vowel sound like John, how I said it. The last name should be “Steen”, like Green. It’s similar to the Dutch pronunciation but the vowel sounds slightly different. We also say Da Vinci with the vin like tin or sin, not veen like green as it would be in the native Italian. Just to give an example of how artists names change in different languages.

Its a terrible habit you see a lot with English and American English speakers, names are not even recognisable for native speakers. This has nothing to do with different names for places in different languages. I am a native speaker of Dutch (Nederlands) and German (Deutsch) and as you already see there can be told a lot about the names given to the countries as well as their languages, but its perfectly correct when used in english so no problem at all. The problem occurs when you start to mess up names. I once was asked while living in Amsterdam for the direction to the Ven Cow museum by a gentleman with a hardly understandable southern USA accent. I never ever heard a German nor a Dutchman pronounce an english name in such a way it would not be very good recognisable anymore. Ofcourse pronouncing names in different languages will sometimes (or even often) be different from the pronunciation in the native language, but in english nowadays names are nearly anglicised. This is why I ask you to at least try to pronounce names as they are.

The Hermitage in St. Petersburg is definitely a huge and important collection as well. I hope to go there someday after the war is over. Have never visited Russia.
