Very ingenius categorizations. I hadn't realized the diversity. Nice dice shelf on the wall too!

Nice job with the categories. I really like tile laying games and this gives me another way of analyzing them. I enjoy carcassone, voluspa, scrabble, rumi k, bat'l khaos, hey, that's my fish, Qwirkle, forbidden desert, the amazing labyrinth and dominoes. Thanks for the video, think I will subscribe

Neat video, Adam. Today I learned what "tessellation" means; I'd always heard it used in discussions about mosaics, but hadn't cemented my understanding of it until I looked it up just now.

I had to look up how to spell it for the video! Not a word I commonly use!

Excellent! Looking forward to seeing other lists like "dice mechanisms" or "card mechanisms"... [Just saw you've already done that. :) I'll watch them soon.]

Nicely done Adam, though inevitably trying to categorize always leaves you open to inconsistencies, you mentioned the link between Oregon and Tigris being on boards for example, ( you could easily say Tigris could be there with Oregon then but the nuts of Tigris is really about the destruction element :), you lose a point for not including the old grandad Acquire, still among the best GAME of all time never mind just tiles and also featuring a rigid board of locations ( sharing an aspect with Oregon that the tiles/cards in hand limit where you can place and both games make use of that in driving strategic placement). Anyway ACQUIRE should be here. If I had to make a genre not on the list perhaps I'd add 'Reef Encounter' as a tile laying game with boards and a shared tableau and destruction but where the tile laying itself is really an aside to the real issue of manipulating stocks and shares and your holdings in them,
