According to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Japan#Medieval_Japan_.281185.E2.80.931573.2F1600.29 the "Medieval Japan Period" is from 1185 to 1573/1600. So 1) Medieval is not a *purely* Euro-centric term 2)16th century is within the Japan's Medieval period. That being said, they *did* say that the time frame they are considering is identical to the *European Medieval* period. So you are at least partly right, in my opinion.

+Orlando James Which do you consider bad?
@ontaka59979 жыл бұрын
+Orlando James I agree that many of the films introduced here are awful. However Hollywood has made wonderful films taking place in the medieval era during the 50s and 60s. Although there are a lot of historical inaccuracies, they are wonderfully made. Some examples: The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) still the best Robin hood Movie to be made, with Errol Flynn Knights of the Round Table (1953) I prefer Excalibur, but it is far better than the one starring Sean Connery. Ivanhoe (1952) The Black Knight (1954) The Vikings (1958) starring Kirk Douglas El Cid (1961) starring Charlton Heston The War Lord (1965) also Chalton Heston and the list goes on. I do agree that Hollywood should make new films set in medieval Europe. I hope they make the setting more darker and also with more historical accuracy.
@Decrepit_Productions9 жыл бұрын
+On Taka Yeah. The instant I saw Kevin Costner's Robin Hood on Mojo's list I thought to myself, "If this film gets in, the 1938 Flynn Robin Hood must rank pretty high". Not a flawless movie but a darn fine one, with one of the best orchestral music scores in all filmdom. When Monty Python appeared in slot three I wondered how they would better it, not realizing non European (setting) films were in the running. Can't argue with Seven Samurai in position two, thought I might argue it being higher.
@tammycroft9559 жыл бұрын
+On Taka I noticed that none of the film were made before 1970 EXCEPT for the two classics that weren't American. Now, I loved them both BUT There were a lot of Great Medieval movies made during the Fifties and Sixties. There should have been more on this list. And one of my guilty pleasures is a Medieval movie that didn't even get anywhere near this list: LADYHAWKE

If this list included only medieval films not based on a famous legend or were comical, Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) should be #1. The production values are staggering, the cast is amazing and the film is reasonably accurate and about the Crusades, a very compelling and still relevant topic. The Name of the Rose should be on there too. This list is quite small, though, I already don't know what else to include. Also the Seven Samurai and Ran, although I feel like depictions of the feudal era in other cultures deserves its own list. If we *are* including legends, then it doesn't get much better than Prince of Thieves for pure entertainment and a relatively accurate medieval look - I feel legends don't have to be as authentic to the times anyway - and it should be #2 or 3. Braveheart, however, is such a horribly inaccurate abomination it should not be in the top ten. It is two and a half hours of great fight scenes and total wrongness in every other way. This would not be a problem except that it sells itself as pretty much authentic.

How can Kingdom of Heaven be remotely accurate when it portrays a lowborn man who, somehow, becomes Lord of Jerusalem? That’s the most American thing I could think of, start from nothing and become great... Besides, knights train their all life to be warrior but he best them because he his father taught him 1 move in the snow once. Oh, and he comes from a frozen land but is able to tell them stupid sarrasins how to irrigate their land and make a well, like people from the desert didn’t know.. come on. Stupid story, great setting.

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is decent, but The Adventures of Robin Hood is by far the best adaptation of the legend. I also don't get your love for First Knight. Everybody I know who saw it hated it. Totally agree with The Seventh Seal. It's one of the best movies ever made.

@jonathankozenko11 жыл бұрын
I agree that The Princess Bride is better than most movies on this list, but with the ROUS's and two fictional countries, I'm thinking it's technically a different world than our own, making it more fantasy than history, despite the fantastic elements being incredibly subdued.
@sen78263 жыл бұрын
It is more of a fairy tale, not exactly what comes to mind when you think Medieval movies, I guess. Although I agree it is technically set in a vague medieval-like era.

There are also religious medieval movies like "Fratello sole, sorella luna" and all the versions of Joan of Arc's life. Another movie missing is Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev,

Glad you receognized the unmatched film The Seventh Seal. I think you should have included in the top ten, too, The Navigator; if you've not yet seen it, see it and you'll understand why. Oh, and it is set in England in the time of the Black Death, and in a (pre-Christchurch-earthquake) contemporary New Zealand---the latter sequences in color, the medieval ones (before they go through the tunnel through the Earth to 600 years later) in black and white.

Errol Flynn's The Adventures of Robin Hood is probably the definitive film, and I'd go for Robin Hood (1991) starring Patrick Bergin and Uma Thurman over Prince of Thieves. Bergin's portrayal of arrogant, short-tempered and playful Robin is much closer to the archetype than many all-too-serious, broody versions. (The Russel Crowe film was particularly embarassing and painful to watch.) Robin is an Odyssean hero of wit and pride. Also, The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) is probably worth looking into. And El Cid. Of TV films, the Hollow Crown is an excellent interpretation of Shakespeare's historical plays. And as far as animated films go, apart from Sword in the Stone, The Black Cauldron (which is fantastical but based on a medieval story) and Brave, there is also The Book of Kells which should appeal to medievalists especially.

I wouldn't have put #9 "Robin Hood: Prince of Box Office Theft" in this list. I wouldn't have even CONSIDERED it for this list! Kingdom of Heaven got ignored when it was released as a lackluster period piece. It's poor performance can be attributed to the fact that the producers made director Ridley Scott cut 45 minutes from the original edit. They felt that no one would sit through a 3 hour movie even though Lord of the Rings extended cuts had already proven otherwise. If you thought the original movie was bad, try the directors cut. It's very nearly an entirely different movie. Everything is improved from character motivations to pacing.
@briangaston13703 жыл бұрын
The Kingdom of Heaven should be top 3, Excalibur top 3, Braveheart top 3(probably my personal favorite), Robinhood 2010 should have probably made the list and The King 2019, Centurion and The 13th Warrior(but perhaps too early a period for the last two) should have gotten an honorable mention. Oh and Elizabeth: The Golden Age should have been mentioned too.
