This is the first clip from our Series. Top 10 Unarmed Defense Against A Knife Attack or Threat. In part one, we introduce you to the inside and outside forearm disarms against someone holding a knife in the saber grip position and the reverse or ice-pick grip position.
‪@JingShenKuoshu‬
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT SUMMARY:
Introduction
Greg Fraser introduces himself and his partner Dave
They will demonstrate some tactical knife defense techniques.
Unarmed Defense Against Blade
- The first line of defense is to either get out of the situation or disarm the attacker.
- Use the environment to disarm the attacker by finding a weapon.
- If unarmed, the goal is to control the attacker's upper arm.
- Squeezing and grabbing with the hand is not recommended, instead slide the thumb and middle finger down to the wrist pocket to control the wrist.
- The technique involves using the flat side of the blade against the flat side of the arm and compressing it to the forearm.
- If done correctly, it can create an opportunity to disarm the attacker.
- Different variations of the technique are demonstrated based on different attack situations.
Shanking Style
- The shanking style is a sudden attack where the attacker stabs the victim and they instinctively grab the blade.
- The technique involves taking control of the attacker's wrist by using the same principles as before.
- The technique works whether the blade is inside or outside of the wrist.
Closing
- Greg Fraser thanks Dave for helping with the demonstration.
- The techniques shown are the first phase of clean and easy techniques.
- They ask for feedback from viewers.

There are very few techniques that I've seen throughout my 35+ years of training in the martial arts, sport fighting, and self-defense fields that I feel confident to say work well when applied correctly. These are some of the "Street Tested & Proven" principles that I've used over the years as an executive security officer, bouncer, and street fighter with great success.
Special Thanks to Dave Stafford for assisting in the video and to Steve Durand as our videographer.
**** These techniques have the potential to seriously injure, maim, or even cause death.
1) You should NEVER use a live blade to train
2) ALWAYS train under the supervision of a trained professional there with you.
3) Choose your training partner carefully to be sure you take care of each other.

Being unarmed against a knife is one of the most dangerous scenarios you could find yourself in. Whether you are taken by a surprise attack, don’t have access to a weapon yourself, can’t run or need to stand your ground to protect your loved ones…. I am giving you some basic fundamentals that should be universal to a situation like this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZSndn-jmbmWbLM

Not if you palm press and use your middle finger and thumb to slide for a C-clamp to the wrist. If done correctly, you’ll actually have wrist locking potential and the most effective grip control you can use on a wrist. Thanks for your comment.

I am by no means an expert, but I have taken a few classes on self defense and I've gained some good knowledge. It was a police officer teaching it and he was demonstrating the reality of knife defense. He would always say the problem with drilling like this, is that it always assumes your attacker actually reveals the knife. Most often they will have it hidden, either up a sleeve, behind their back, in a plastic bag etc. By the time you even see the knife, they've already stabbed you more than once. We never trained slow, it was always the attacker explosively stabbing multiple times out of nowhere. It really puts things into perspective. He did briefly demonstrate techniques similar to in this video, and said they are good for certain situations where your attacker actually does pull the knife and threatens you with it, but the amount of training it requires to actually execute is usually more than an average person can commit to. Your best defense is awareness and getting away before an attacker can close the distance if possible. I've never been able to find an instructor like that police officer again, which is unfortunate. He had a very realistic approach. Also, I'm not discrediting anything in this video, I just wanted to share some information

Your comments are correct. The emotional response training to someone trying to rush and speed stab you is good, in that it starts to activate your awareness and realign your mindset for real violence. It's also very true that on the streets you often feel the blade before you see it..... if the attackers intent is to kill or maim you. So if you are young, hangout at bars with alcohol, drugs, etc and you talk shit or instigate situations against yourself... if you are in prison or find yourself defending your block.... Then yes, the likely-hood of you being stuck multiple times before you notice is likely, because you've been flanked. Now if you have awareness, are over 35, don't hang in bars, walk and talk crap, you're more likely to be encountering a different type of attacker other than a predator. If you get predatorally attacked you might need to consider who you hang with, where you choose to hangout or visit, what time and where you hang and if so who's got your back. I came from a street background and have been a part of gang fights, I've body-guarded for years, bounced and have seen all that, simply because I put myself in those volatile areas where violence is common. You have to know the persons mindset. Are they jealous, desperate, in fear, protecting something or someone, are they contracted .... there are hundreds of options and locations. You can practice to stay calm when suprised, but without real time in working on training in multiple scenarios over years. Your class still leaves you potentially dead. Training slow is the only way to start. Slow and controlled, then smooth and fluid, then increase strength and speed and finally add in fear and the "what-if" game. So going to a seminar with a motivational cop is inspiring like a Tony Robbins event, you feel fired up, your awareness has been activated, and the excitement is high, but if you didn't train with someone stabbing you, go through scenarios over and over with different training partners.... it's like he paddled you out to the big surf, told you about the coral reef below and the potential of a shark attack, getting cut by your board, or punched for crossing into a locals wave, you might feel your getting the idea of what its like until that first 12ft overhead wave is on top of you and you realise then that he never took the time to teach you first how to swim. Thanks for you comment. Keep visiting 😎

Anyone here ever really been in thIS SITuation? I 've been stabbed, just like in movies, in a dark alley woth some drugged up punk who would go away woth a knife. I found myself in a closed in area and bc how life is, I didnt think he was actually gonna stab me. I am not rookie to defending muyself, ive been in mamny many street fights, this was my first fighting barehanded against a blade, and once they see they drew blood, they will come at you all or nothing because they know theyve really hirt you. Dont fight, do what you can to run away, punch and run, kick and run, unless you are training daily with hand eye ciirdination drills and can control crazy adrenaline, dont try and doe these steven segall moves. I got lucky with one stick to the solar plexus, and got a off a lucky hark kick to the face that allowed me to run the F^%$ away. |Go to nearest door and clled the police and almost died from a single knife attack due to blood loss. This is reality, strike and evade, or like he said carry a gun.

My Own Hero Absolutely true. You should always get away if you can. No one wins a knife fight. If cornered, and I’ve been in several knife threats and attacks where I’ve been sliced and stabbed. Luckily around my hands and forearms unlike you had to deal with. I am not encouraging knife fighting. Thanks for the real comment. I hope you’ve started training seriously since that experience. I did. 🤟

Personally I think that it's almos impossible to obtain wrist control if someone wants to kill you with a knife, it'so fast and unpredictable that you don't have the time nor the power to do it. Like Doug Marcaida says: 'Weapons are meant to be felt not seen' So the knife attack begins more like a sucker punch, you don't see it comming. If someone shows you the knife to rob you then he doesn't necessarily have true murder intent, and that might give you options if you are trained and have good awareness. Also, the hand extensors are just as important for grabbing as the flexors. For all of you who disagree with this post, please keep in mind that i'm just expressing my thoughts because it's a free internet. It doesn't belong to you, so no planet of the apes: insults, etc...

Ion Lucian I agree, though you must do something. You probably won’t be able to run far after getting knifed, so anything to defend yourself is better than nothing. I would hate to be in that situation, avoidance is key to survival.
@calvinmurry1096
@calvinmurry1096 4 жыл бұрын
Actually you are very accurate. I have been in close to a dozen knife duels. You don't win knife fights. You SURVIVE knife fights. You will get cut. The object is not to catch a blade in a vital area. Like the neck.and for God sake stay away from fine motor techniques. A lot of folk don't get that duels still happen. They think of tv westerns and martial arts movies. But you go to any major inner city and you will see gun and knife duels on a daily basis. Especially in prisons. Which is where I developed my knife fighting skills. Finally people with a knife don't stand still. They swarm and with one hand jackhammering you with stabs the other hand is holding you and pulling you into the blade. So you don't want to step back. You want to pivot out of range and use his forward aggression against him. And hope you survive.

@JEFFREY EPSTEIN Sadly, there aren't many krav maga dojos that train it like is should be: With sparring. There are many places where they teach only the techniques with a cooperating partner and that is all, they don't pressure test what they teach. It's a bit like learning to swim in the pool and expect to do well in the ocean. There are some places where they teach the real deal but they're rare (take a look at 'Fight Quest' documentary on krav maga and you'll see the difference).

I have never seen anybody in my country using the knife like that. They use a reverse grip keeping the hand far from reach and stabbing multiple times, in videos you can see that sometimes several times per second. I have yet to try somethintg that may work against that. Greetings from Bogota. Colombia.

You say you can't block a knife but you can grab the arm and slide to the wrist on a stabbing arm? Seems questionable to me.
@JingShenKuoshu
@JingShenKuoshu 5 жыл бұрын
TeamEmfield Good question. The reason you don’t go for the hand directly, is because it’s going to be flaring, slashing and stabbing. If you look at someone slashing a blade back and forth you will notice that the upper arm (from the elbow to the shoulder) moves much slower, in relation to the lower arm.if you are attempting to grab a knife hand, you therefore, grab for the upper arm near the elbow and slide down to the wrist. I’ll actually make a video specifically addressed to this for you so other people who might also see your concern. I will focus on this. Thanks for the comment TeamEmfield. I will make that for you and give you a shout out on the video.

theres never any easy answer to a knife attack I agree if you can run and get away that's the 1st thing to do if that's not a choice u have then a improvised weapon or get behind a car if you could get your belt off in time and use it might help still some good advice however.

This is some great info! When I was young I was involved in a street fight. Someone in the crowd shouted the “other guy has a knife”! I immediately took off running and didn’t look back. Once I was safe, found an old broom along the alley and used this as my defense just incase I was to be attacked again...Today, I’m to old to run and will have to go toe to toe with the punk! Hope it doesn’t happen 😡 in the meantime, I’ll be training with my grandson 🥊 🥋

Are you a fifth degree blackbelt Greg? Speaking for myself-Ive traìned in Taekwondo for thirty plus years-I would prefer to use the leg in any combat situations. The leg is longer and more powerful than the arm.
@JingShenKuoshu
@JingShenKuoshu Жыл бұрын
The leg is very useful. Using it to keep someone at distance. If it gets cut or sliced though you May eliminate your option to take off. With your years of training though it could be a consideration. For instance a teep or crescent kick. I have been training now for 45 years . Great question though, because you must learn to use you skill set for a possible situation. Thanks for being a part of this community

you better hope they have a wide,flat, dull blade, a weak grip and slow as shit reflexes. i can appreciate the idea behind it. and with a wide blade, perhaps this can work. But who carrys a knife that looks like that? i carry The Spike by Cold Steel IF i choose to carry a fixed blade. if you did this move, the blade will definately roll and cut you. deep. i carry a droppoint folder as well, 3.5 inches, which is too small for you to implent this particular movement against. tou would be better of breaking the wrist immediately upon gaining control of the wrist . my 2 cents...

Gerik Lim Thanks for the comment Gerik. I’ve been threatened, attacked and had to defend others from knives, guns ... once, even a crowbar swinging at me while on ice. I’ve also fought full contact in just about every style of combat sport and weapons sports. Yes, if you are in an Escrima match or fake knife sparring, that can be quite true .....when matched by another sport minded person. On the other hand, in real attacks and threats, people move in aggressively, grabbing arms is quite easy. Dangerous but not hard, especially when your adrenaline levels are sky high. When grabbing a bare arm, that’s one of the best ways to gain control of someone.

This is too risky. You can't hope for a wrist-lock. Knife attacks happen very fast in a repetitive motion. You are very likely to miss his arm, especially if he is moving around trying to stab you. Sorry but the opening movement where you stop the arms this technique for knife defense is going to get you stabbed quick. The wrist control is good. When it comes to knifes. The aim of the game is to find a way around the rear of the attacker while deflecting his energy. Its a greek Pankration movement used by the Spartans. It is effective and takes practice. There is no short or quick way around knife defense. People have two hands...therefore they can switch hands after one hand is grabbed. These techniques look good. But in reality, using them will most likely get you gutted. The first thing with knife attack is a split second choice for distance or closeness. It takes a lot of training for actual real life defense. And you should definitely go in ready to be cut in non vital areas including hands.. Being ready,open accepting to being cut in your hands and arms is what will save you from being killed. You must expect to be cut. In real life, people are much much faster and these quick fix techniques do not work.

@dzcasanova8840

At least this one looks realistic not like other videos showing asthetics fancy combos , lets be honest guys it's not a movie , these situations are so dangerous , so not every martial art has the affective techniques for desarming weapons effectively without getting hurt , cause as he said reality is something else enemy won't be waiting for you to counter him with fancy combos pr throwing weak strike at you once then stopping like we see on other stupid self defence videos or movies , difference in size , body and strength must be another factor that you're gonna deal with , so conclusion here is even if there are few effective martials arts out there for self-defence especially against armed enemies you need to practice and train your strength and ur body physicly or none of this would work cause your reactions and your sense and body posture and stuff won't be coordinated ... I suggest some martial arts that been historicly created for these purposes if any want realistic solution , so you got traditional ju-jitsu (japanese one) , Kali , Pinchack Silat , Judo (but black belt and beyond) , and Jeet Kune Do a bit

@JingShenKuoshu
@JingShenKuoshu 4 жыл бұрын
Nirmal Dev Always start with the moving slowly first, looking at form, accuracy and fluidity. You want to make your movements flow instead of smash or jerk. To have good flow you need to develop your balance while in motion. After that begin slowly increasing the speed. Be sure to focus on your 🎯 targeting distance, timing and rhythm. Once you’ve accomplished the point of fluidity an notion and you’ve been able to speed tings up, then you can work on power, creative variations and the finite add-on stuff. Thanks for the question. Did this help at all. I can make a video of it for you.

I always love reading the comments from the armchair commandos on these types of videos. "This'll get you killed!", Etc. ,etc...well, here are a couple observations from a 30 -year corrections veteran with some experience in stabbing incidents: 1. The guy is trying to kill you, so you're already getting killed. Whatever you try can't get you killed worse. 2. Diligent practice in any solid defense technique will increase your chances, but no one strategy is a guarantee of survival. 3. If the guy grabs onto you with his free hand, your chances of survival plummet precipitously. 4. Personally, I believe that you are much safer trying to disarm the attacker from behind than from the front. If you can manage to arm drag either the knife or free hand and attack from the back, you probably won't die (if you have skills to disable him).

Now this is the type of response I like. An educated one thanks 🙏. Lol. I’m going to put a few new videos up in the next 2 weeks on Knife Defense principles. I’d love your feedback. Thanks again.

And as an ex-con who served a 15yr term I can tell you (as if you didn’t already know) that you won’t see a knife or even see the attack coming until it starts. They certainly won’t come at you from a squared up stance.

@@xaviertettens4498 Right you are. I had an extended conversation with a lifer many years ago, who demonstrated how the other lifers secretly trained for a knife fight or "hit". He would reach out with the free hand, grab the other guy's belt, pull him in, and "start the sewing machine."

Yes, this is a video demo, not direct training. You’ll want years of training to be able to understand distance, timing and rhythm.

I trained krav maga for almost 6yr and even had being attacked by knife in real life and this is not the way to do it. You never ever try to grab the knife with those jackie chan moves/ techniques.

You are very misinformed. The most important thing to understand is how to trap an opponents amen and disarm the weapon quickly. I’ve had several opportunities to use this in many encounters as a body guard, bouncer, and in executive security. Krav Maga has some decent basics, but thinking you are going to strike someone with a knife is silly. You’d better get hold of that arm and control your attacker. Run obviously if you can. Thanks for your comment. 🤜

Thr reality of a knife coming at you is that is a back and forward movement that last 23 seconds(factual) and he is not going to let his arm in the front just like that. ( you gotta be as fast or faster than the person who is trying to stab you so you can disarm him)

The best thing to do every time is grab the hand. I’ve played knife fighted a special ops vet. and I got him almost every time by doing that .

So many people say you can’t grab the knife hand… I completely disagree. When adrenaline is up so is your accuracy. I’m almost always able to grab the arm. Having the knowledge to disarm the weapon is important. Thank you for your comment.

Nope, nope, nope, you're not gonna grab or stall the upper arm and "slide down into the wrist pocket." You will be cut to ribbons. As a former bouncer/doorman I can say that you will not do any of this. Give me that knife, and I'll show you what a real encounter is gonna be like.

That was a drill from years ago. Just speaking of principles. I’ll do a bit of an update to show you better how it works. As a bouncer for more than 20years, an executive security officer and a body guard I’ve had to deal with knives and guns. I’ve worked in all kinds of venues through Canada and the US. I’ve actually just been asked to redesign my Bouncer Training program to train bouncers and event security in Southern California. You absolutely do need to get control of the pocket of the wrist. I’d be happy to checkout a response video you as a bouncer could send to demonstrate how you’ve successfully handled knife threats, attacks or fights. Thanks for commenting.✅

What about if a woman is the victim, men are stronger than us women, so my question is will this technique work ?
@JingShenKuoshu
@JingShenKuoshu 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. These techniques work well for trained practitioners. Women or men. The technical details are very important for the timing, positioning and rhythm though. So don’t think a video can make someone a specialist. You need to put in a ton of training.
