I bought my ferret from a lovely farmer and his wife. They bred them but their ferrets were all lovely well loved pets. Once a female had a litter they had them done to stop them breeding again and didnt die from not breeding. Here in the uk pet stores dont really sell ferrets so the only choice I had was to look to adopt or buy. Adopting turned up nothing so I looked about for responsible breeders

Pet Supermarket, petstore like PetSmart or Petco, but they usually sell ferrets, usually 2 and usually a male and female together, but if u only buy one, they wont bring in anymore til the last one is sold...its how i got my lil Booba, and hes thriving beautifully. And btw, my lil guy came from Marshall Farms, and hes healthy as can be. I dunno the real T about them, but my babys healthy and had a check by vet before purchase, from the store, and had a complete med history before i even exchanged money. So...this was in NC as well. I used to work at Petco and I made it a point to let everyone on my team know about safe kibbles to feed that we sold, we don't get paid to promote at Petco-we're just underpaid and not trained and I imagine the same applies to other pet stores. Before owning ferrets I owned hamsters and I guess the hamster community has made it a point to make sure people know not to trust employees because when I first saw a ferret I had no idea what it even was and I still didn't ask the employees at the store!! Haha... I did all the research overnight, bought everything and had it shipped overnight then went to get my first ferret as soon as the store opened!! I felt super bad for impulse buying(because I had only ever adopted animals) but she was the cutest thing in the world to me at that moment. A month later I adopted another ferret that way she would have company, sadly my biggest regret/mistake was purchasing a ferret but I don't regret buying her. There's a German brand called Frettchen4You. They make high quality kibble for ferrets, made by experienced and passioned ferret breeders. Also, you don't have to adopt, there's also ferret breeders out there that are very good at what they do. Many european breeders gladly sells to America, to help irradicate Marshalls horrible breeding facilities and make it easier for Americans to get a healthy, good pet whose herritage they can follow back to the very first breeding in their bloodline. A solution to wanting a ferret, but not having the possibiliti to free roam enough - make a ferret room with no cage, or an outdoor aviary where they can run and play as they want :)
@Pazuandfriends5 жыл бұрын
I have heard of that brand, however I am having trouble translating the website. I'm not sure if we are able to order that in America. Yes there are breeders but they are very infrequent in the U.S. many of them are not considered reputable and have bad reputations for one reason or another. I am unaware of any European breeders that would ship an animal to the U.S, we have so many unwanted ferrets here so I wanted to promote that in the video. I am no way against breeders, but for ferrets we have such an influx in the shelters right now.
@louisenielsen71065 жыл бұрын
@@Pazuandfriends I have noticed that their translation is difficult to find. There is an english version on their website though.. I'm danish my self, and No good at German, so I always just allow Google to translate to danish 😂 My breeder are sending 2 or 3 kits to America this year, one is a sibling to the kid I'm buying 🙂 she has sent some before. She's such a good breeder, but I am aware that many only breed for profits and don't do enough for the health part of the blood lines. We luckily rarely have ferrets in shelters over here, probably because most ferrets are sold directly from breeders with contracts stating that you will return them to the breeder should you be unable to keep them at some point :)
@Pazuandfriends5 жыл бұрын
@@louisenielsen7106 I have heard the breeders overseas are far superior. Here in the upper east coast of U.S. we have no breeders. There are some in PA but they rarely have litters. Most breeders have been retiring / phasing out. There's an angora breeder in NC (like 15 hours away) but they have somewhat of a cloudy reputation. Very hard to find! However in all surrounding shelters there are many pairs and even trios of ferrets looking for homes.
@louisenielsen71065 жыл бұрын
@@Pazuandfriends We have very strict laws in EU when it comes to animals, that might be why. There's a very reputable angora breeder in the UK, but angora is a very tricky thing to breed as they can't nurse their kits themself, and can come with a variety of health problems if not done right. So I would always recommend angoras from breeders that allows you to visit and gladly shows parents and other ferrets from the bloodline to you 🙂
@Pazuandfriends5 жыл бұрын
@@louisenielsen7106 the angora breeder here I've been told ships their fuzzies throughout the north west, I have heard from many sources that they run sort of like a mill, conditions aren't great and lots of kits had health issues and people having a hard time getting paperwork. They've also been shunned by the ferret show community. They don't breed up to "show standard" Seems a bit shady to me, but what do i know /shrug. Wish I was a UK resident so I could get my hands on some happy and healthy fuzzies!

Personally, I think any minors should wait to get ferrets until they’re adults and have steady jobs. Often, parents don’t want to spend hundreds and hundreds on vet bills (plus the long drive to exotic vets), proper nutrition, cages, toys, etc. You need to make 110% sure you have the resources to support the ferret, and not rely on fickle parents (unless they’re ferret owners themselves.) I’m in my mid 20s and have always wanted ferrets, and I’m glad I didn’t get one when I was younger. I got a ferret last week and have already spent over $1,500 on it (vet visit and vaccines included.) ferrets are very prone to illness which will cost hundreds yearly. Just wait!

I’ve had my ferrets for over a year but my only concern is well they WONT EAT MEAT and I’ve tried rabbit quail and other types of meat they just won’t eat meat
@jessicatherese42614 жыл бұрын
Katna Marsh they were probably brought up on pellets. Try slowly adding that kind of stuff in with the dry food. Ferrets are super picky eaters and it’s hard to change there diet and it can take a few months but just be patient and add small bits in there food and gradually increase that amount

Growing up my husband had 6 or 7 ferrets. He wound up moving to the basement so the ferrets had their room to free roam all day and then they were only in the cage at night or during cleanings. He absolutely loves them. However his friend recently impulse bought 2 ferrets because he saw them and he had nothing prepared for them. It was horrible. I was so mad and frustrated he didn’t research. My husband then spent hours telling him what he needed to get for the ferrets like a big cage and litter box and the food they eat. It was a disaster and thankfully he has listened to my husbands advice and followed his instructions. Ferrets are amazing fun animals but they are mischievous and love to get into trouble.

I've always wanted a ferret since I was little and I never researched them and now when I was thinking about getting one I was looking on KZbin and I saw your video and now since the vet bills are going to be really high sometimes I don't have enough money and I still live with my parents

Ferrets are my dream pets, lately I have been watching huge ferret owners and learning correct info, inc not to use ferret shampoo and to use oatmeal baths, because they are better for their skin, I have been showing my mum videos and stuff to hopefully convince her xD💕✨

A diet I found that could be good is that you get them a bowl of ziwipeak air dried beef cat food, and you serve it when it’s in water also with another water bowl. And like 2-3 times a week feed them raw chicken wings. Is this a good diet or not?

Thank you for making such an in depth video about ferrets! I'm hopefully going to be getting ferrets soon, and as an exotic animal owner I totally agree on the setting money aside for vets! Here it's a minimum of $85 to just SEE the animal, nevermind the testing and treating them. It's so so important to have money saved up when buying a new animal, especially with uncommon or exotic animals.

I have one ferret. And I thought he could use a friend.. and found someone rehoming two for 150 plus a giant to go cage (later she told me I could get them for free after we talked for a while so I know she really wants them to have a good home!). The sad thing is they lady loves them but feels bag bc she's too busy. Super excited, getting them Thursday!!!

Thank u. We rescued two ferrets. This helps a lot. The only issue is that they freak out being apart. They are three years apart. So I’m worried when one passes away the other will be depressed. I thought I was doing right with the paste. Glad to know I shouldn’t. We do keep them in the living room as much as we can. They use the furniture as a jungle gym. Lol.

You should get a kit (young ferret) or another one he/she will be happy if you get another ferret and you should get it soon before the other one passes or the ferret will notice more and Be sad

Just a few questions.. 1. Is it okay to give your ferrets an oatmeal soak every time you wash them? 2. Is it okay to give them a mix of dried meats and kibble for their diet? 3. What kind of treats are best for ferrets? 4. What brand of cages do you recommend? 5.if there’s not any shelters near me is there another option other than a pet store?
@e33a.0.3 Жыл бұрын
i’ve always really liked ferrets and i’ve done lots of research in them like food, cages, toys, environments, exercise, basically all the needs for a ferret. i love everything about them i know what they come with, vet wise etc, but the only place i would be able to but one would be from pet land…they’re all so young there just barley teething, and they are from the big marshall’s pet mill which i don’t like, everything from marshall’s is either super unpredictable or gets sick or unhealthy really easily. i’ve looked for pet shelters near me and everything but where i live there’s not one shelter that sells or regimes healthy ferrets, or just ferrets in general. the shelters where i live only sell cats or dogs, no ferrets, no rodents, no reptiles, nothing like that just cats and dogs. i’ve really been looking around but nothing has them except pet stores, and i preferably don’t want one from there, but it’s quite literally my only option, and i live in a somewhat rural area, so there’s nothing good for miles outside of my county, so i’m not sure what to do. it’s a struggle 😭😭

How long should you take a ferret out of the cage for? 2hr? 3? Because I have maybe 2hrs at noon and 2 at evening, and i am kinda busy.
@hootiehootowl4 жыл бұрын
I've taken in 2 older ferrets that are bonded unfortunately who came from a pet store originally and have only ever been fed kibble. How do you reccomend transitioning to healthier fresh food if they refuse to eat it? Especially with their age I dont want to risk them losing more weight.

Omg!!! I bought my first ferret from petco, but if i thought of what you said on why to go somewhere like an adoption place first ,i wouldve done that first!....but i must say that now i have my ferret, i m attached and wouldnt trade her (her names nippy) for the world! But thank you for that tip because ive been thinking she definately needs a partner, even though she was bred by marshals, who makes there ferrets unable to have babies, which made me sad. Anyways thanx for the tip. Subbed!

Hello, I’m planning on getting a ferret and I’m researching sooo much these past few weeks about their diet! I just want to hear your guy’s feedback. I am planning to give my ferret a variety of foods, isn’t that better for the ferret? Because my family rarely buys meat and I am a vegetarian myself I plan on feeding my ferret raw meat a few times a months and giving him a mix of dry ferret food and high quality kitten food daily. Will that be alright?

As an option instead of dry kibble could you feed your ferret something like canned cat food if you can’t justify a raw diet but want to give them the hydration a raw food diet gives or could you add some water to the kibble

I'm 14 and I want a ferret so bad. And I have done so so much research and I'm going to do a raw food diet and so it's not an Impulsive buy im getting him in a month or two and I have figured out everything and am going to a local ferret shelter so that I can help one. This video really helped cause I was going to use a water bottle not a bowl lol. Thank you!!

I noticed you mentioned Origins for ferrets being a good brand has still given ferrets bladder stones. So I should NEVER use this? I was thinking of getting CleanProtein but it’s extremely difficult to get in Australia. I fed origins to my rats who lived to 3-4, but I guess their completely different animals. (And it’s different food) would love to hear you opinion although I know you feed Raw!

I am getting ferrets in 3 weeks from a previous owner. I have a 9-5 job and live in a rental, so I have no choice but to leave them in their (double ferrets nation) cage during the day, but they will freeroam the rest of the time (in the morning when I wake up, all night from 5:30-midnight, and they will be free in a very big, 10 000 000% ferret-proofed room during the night). I want to do a mix of kibble and raw. Is that okay ? That way I don't have to worry about raw meat going bad when I'm away or sleeping, but they would get daily portions of raw meat when I can supervise
@seniviax68783 жыл бұрын
Kibble and raw is a bad idea. It can upset their tummies and cause more issues if one isn't balanced. Please do one or the other, its never a good idea to do both. It also is pointless because they wont get the benefits of either as it will be mixed.

So I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while, since I’ll be finishing uni and moving into a newly converted barn complex (my family has a small holding) - my mum wouldn’t want one in the main house lol! But if I get one it’ll be with me almost 24/7 and come with me most of the places I go, kinda like a dog (definitely don’t want a dog btw- dislike them strongly). I certainly don’t agree with caging them so it would be free to roam. I was wondering if that would suit a ferret? would also hope to work it sometimes too (as I shoot rabbits in the area a fair bit). I’ve owned cats, rodents and a jackdaw (and numerous other creatures less relevant to ferrets) but not anything that needs training quite to a ferrets level. Basically I’m asking if people have been successful in keeping them this way and if it’s a good idea? I’ll have all the time in the world for it so that’s not an issue 🙃 i was also hoping to buy from a reputed breeder (about £250 angora)

I have a question for number six. So say you have a like 7-9 hour job, can you keep them in to cage during work so they can be safe. And when you get home you let them out. Is that ok
@danielasoto99524 жыл бұрын
i’ve watched the part where you said not to buy them from pets stores and yet i’m still confused. where SHOULD we buy them from? i’m trying to buy one and i’m doing a lot of research.

I believe I discuss it in the video but you can rescue them from shelters or from people via Craigslist and Facebook groups

What if you don't have any other options...? I've been looking for months to find someone rehoming, the nearest breeder is several states away, and I'm having no luck. On a seperate note, are Single Critter Nations ok?

I just got my ferret, he does eat Origen but I checked the ingredients and the main ingredients are chicken, turkey, and like organs. There’s no chemicals or stuff like that in it so he is staying healthy. And I hate water bottles too they carry a lot of germs and such so I use metal bowls. He has a double cage and he gets 8+ hours or free roaming time :)
@suvmi31664 жыл бұрын
My ferret has a smallish cage. Yet it is a bit tall at least, it goes to my waist and I want to buy another larger cage, yet I can't afford it yet. The ferret, Chaos, has like a shelf in the cage. I only have one ferret. So I think this cage is large enough for him. It seems comfy for him so I think he likes it. Edit: Oh, the ferret cage picture you showed in the video is the cage I have but a bit wider and taller. It is not a double cage yet I'm going to invest in money to get him a larger cage, thanks!
