I like the advice you give in this video. My loose set of rules for top-down mixing is as follows: 1. Static Mix with pan and levels 2. Processing on the 2-buss 3. Processing on the groups 4. Processing on the individual channels 5. Automation This way I don't lose the big picture and only have to fix problems left over after doing the main things, instead of getting every individual channel to sound "perfect" before even starting playing them together. Sounds trivial, but it was a big thing for me that I realized after watching Al Schmitt's workflow.

Very nice video man thank you. I post my notes here for a quick reference. 1. Levelling - processing - before after. Level match 2. Too much processing. Minimize. Why you do every move. 3. Do not process before volume levelling and panning. Gain staging. Listen carefully before processing. 4. Soloing too much 5. Not monitoring at different levels. Reference level. Very low volume = vocals test. 60% medium level. High level low end test. 6. Too many stereo tracks. Mono tracks create wideness. 7. Not using different verbs 8. Not using automation. Amateurs vs pros. 9. Not commiting. Toolbox, limited amount of plugins that you know very good. Deadlines. 10. Establish what are the most important elements in the mix. Some elements will have to be more prominent than others.

Just love your content Dave! No bullshit, just masses of useful info. You motivated me to go thru my plug-ins last night in Logic, organise them properly, deactivate the ones I rarely use (can always turn em on if I open an older project), and importantly, read the manuals properly of the ones I’ve already bought. Absolutely brilliant video. To watch over and over again. As a beginner, I'll include it as part of my work flow 😀 Especially tip number 1...I've figured that out some weeks ago. I wasn't able to hear Eq/compression... I've realized that I wasn't level matching, at all... Once you start doing that you also start to really train your ears against both eq and compression Thank you a lot 😀 keep you with these amazing videos!!! Cheers from Italy 🇮🇹 ciaoooo

Amazing info Dave and great tutorial. I may add. When you set your limitations specially on due time, also set a limiting time to work. Is very simple and I like using when I mix at home. 1:- Have a fresh start with a ruff mix early in the morning, 30 minutes on to it. Ruff is done. Breakfast brake and resart again. Question your self what change? And make your choice on it by routing a mind map of the song. (Any way or technic is find) 2.- the next shift should last around 4 hours for lunch, if you are sleepy after eating with is normal is also normal to reset your ears by taking a nap during the day other wise, if you think can last without by the time you are rapping up and you are tired what quality of descition can you take to finished your mix. If you got burnout during your working day most likely your judgement for adjustments too. Our mind is no diferentes from a cpu prosessor it needs to cool down and you be surprise how much. I can go for days but I think you got my point, thanks Dave greetings from Mexico City

Great video as always! On the point and no bullshit! First time I saw you mr mixbus (sorry but I don't know your name) I admit that I had my doubts because you looked more like a super athlete with a funny accent (now I love your accent btw) then what I imagined a producer should look like, but after viewing some videos I was totally sold! This channel is now one of the first channels I check out every day! It’s almost always something here that makes me really think twice about the way I do things, and always something new to learn! And the word mixaraounditis ( I once went to medical school for some years) is just so funny but also so true that it has become a word in my own vocabulary teaching my students and it could also easily become a medical term. Every word in Latin than end with itis means information. And it works in the same way to. Lol. Keep on posting videos. I am very thankful that you share your wisdom and time with us so a really good Thank You is in place here!!! Kindest regards from Oslo / Norway. 🇳🇴

Love the idea of different amounts of pre-delay going into reverb, I'll be experimenting with that. Re over-processing, here's something I only just worked out recently (or had been doing, and somehow forgot!). I kept trying to reign in the bass frequencies with dynamic EQ and compression, but eventually WOKE UP to the fact that I had not used a parametric to scoop out the most intrusive low frequency bumps. Life is much easier now and I don't have to deal with artifacts and "time messing with settings' on various dyn EQs and compressors. Thanks for a great vid, David :-) P.S. I find that sometimes one hour daydreaming on the porch and thinking more critically is worth more than a whole day's mixing.

I mainly work on my own projects as of late and my problem is committing to an idea and keeping with deadlines. When it comes to mixing and mastering I have a few primary select tools I ALWAYS use no matter what kind of track I'm working on, but I will sometimes, very rarely, switch them out for something with a different color or just a different interface to give me a different feeling like I did something else.

I have found a finish guide song, and a rough mix without plugins as reference helps, I am guilty of over using plugins, that over use is that there is no reference. Interesting how resetting up my studio the monitors are in a different position, room acoustics is different, opening up old mixes just sound different, like I could remix them again which brings me to the listening environment with dips, peaks and phasing issues that you just end up mixing to how it sounds >good< in your room environment, which brings it back to a guide song thats well mixed and mastered and a rough mix to reference to. Thanks David for the info there is always improvements to be made. The next step for me is to go and get my hearing checked lol.
