One of the most seriously underrated drivers ever IMHO. Given his lack of experience, his 1993 season was actually outstanding. He should have been a two-time champion - and would have been if the 1997 outcome had happened in '94. I remember his first win - I cried. I also cried in Spa '98, Hungary '97, and of course, Japan '96. These races still choke me up. His treatment by Frank Williams is the one thing I couldn't forgive him for. Yes, I'm still a Damon fangirl after all these years lol.

Damon was my hero growing up and I have so many fond memories of being little and watching him on TV with my Dad. The way he held his own against incredible teammates like Prost, Senna and Mansell was amazing in itself, and then to win the title in 96 was well deserved. So glad he’s a commentator and still around

To put this into perspective. had Damon made his debut at the same age of Verstappen (18), he would've began his F1 career in 1978. And had Verstappen made his debut at the age of 31, he would've start his career in 2028 (the same year his actual contract will expired). It's proof that you're never too late (or too early) to start your career.

Hill was the first driver to make me an F1 fan as a kid, along with the iconic Rothmans/Racing livery on the Williams. I was too young to appreciate the pressure Damon was under when he stepped in as Williams team leader, wrestling with the combined legacies of both Graham Hill and Ayrton Senna on Damon's shoulders. In retrospect, to come out of that pressure with a world title is truly impressive. And to then prove himself with that Hungary '97 drive for Arrows was one step better than being world champion, even if it must not have felt like it for Damon at the time.

As a youngster here in the US, I remember cheering on Damon Hill in the 90's. Although, I didn't get a chance to watch very many Formula 1 races, his was one of the few names I remember from that era. I was one to cheer on the underdog typically. Michael the top man of the era, and a name I grew tired of hearing. Damon was the antithesis of Michael, probably why I liked him. I enjoyed this one!

One of tne reasons I like Damon is that he's very honest and eloquent in the way he speaks. A lot of drivers, at least in English, seem to struggle to fully translate their feelings in and around the car, or just don't speak honestly or openly. Hill does on the other hand. Plus, I love when he's paired with Johnny Herbert, they make a great duo

Hill wasn't the best driver. No one would claim he was, he was inconsistent and prone to mistakes but he competed with Schumacher, Prost, Mansell and Senna and could at least challenged them. But on his day, Japan '94 for me is best proof of this, he could beat them and that for me is why he remains my favourite.
@kevinscott1697

Hill was the most underrated driver of his era, he was a brilliant test driver by the time he started racing for Williams in 93 after nearly two seasons as a test driver and he knew the nuances of car set up and how to get the car to do the work and not have to throw it around like a go kart. He won races in 1993 and led others convincingly and lost through mechanical failures and team orders and could have won the title, 1994 was maybe his best season in the context of what happened after Ayrton Senna died and taking the challenge to Schumacher with a difficult handling car and was robbed at the last race after driving his best ever race at Suzuka in the wet. He did make a mistake or two in 1995 but the car while quick wasn’t reliable and Williams weren’t sharp enough with strategy, Hill was actually leading many races and Schumacher didn’t pass him on the track but in the pits, that side of it is often overlooked. But Hungary 1997 was his best drive in the dry, the Arrows was six seconds slower at the start of the season and just a few races later he led by 35 seconds, that was where his car development and testing knowledge had came to the fore and his smooth style and he was so unlucky not to win and then did win with Jordan who’d never won before. It’s just a shame his career ended poorly, 1999 was a difficult season with the harder Bridgestone tyres, he couldn’t drive as smoothly as he wanted as he wasn’t getting the feel from the tyres, his motivation died as he knew it didn’t suit him.

Grandissimo! Some of these are arguably forgettable, but the clear top three in my view are Suzuka 94, Interlagos 96 (not mentioned in the video, surprisingly) and Hungary 97. While the 1995 season was poor overall, his victories in Argentina and Hungary that year are impressive (more so than Adelaide), and he also had an extraordinary pole position in Monaco. Speaking of Monaco, it's the reverse of the British GP: the latter he accomplished what his father didn't, whereas he didn't win Monaco where his father was a legend (despite the 95 pole and a dominant drive in 1996).

@@Qsrjeiwjwj neither of them have won the championship for the team at that point. Mika didn't even won a race yet at that time. So Damon have a real chance to being a number 1. And Michael was out for almost an entire year in 99.

The 1998 Belgium Grand Prix will always be my all time favourite ,GP, it's become a legendary race , tho I don't think David Coulthard will quite share the same enthusiasm , after Michael stormed into the McLaren pits threatening to lay one on him , but Damon winning , both the Jordans taking first and second place what can you say , Absolute Classic.

It's kind of insane that a guy with that few races managed to compete so well with Prost in 1993. He was a COMPLETE rookie. I genuinely think he had a few moments (Japan 94) where he was better than the best, but he certainly lacked that cut-throat attitude and maybe the ability to perform like Senna or Schumacher week-in, week-out. Brilliant driver, nonetheless.
