I live in Victoria Australia, and i remember black Saturday like it was yesterday. I was 12 and it was that one time in my life i was scared to go to sleep, despite the fact i live in the suburbs. It wasn't just February to March, it was December all the way through to early April, fire popping up in random places. There was a huge fire that happened very close to where i live, started off with someone lighting a couch on fire and because of the heat and winds, it spread through out almost half of the suburb. Mid January 2009 i would jump into my pool on one of the hottest days that year, the sky was orange, everything smelt like ash, i'd pop my head out of the water for 15 seconds and my hair would be bone dry again. At night i could hear all three different sirens almost the whole time, and so if it wasn't the heat keeping you up, it was the noise. This is coming from someone who lived in the safe areas, someone who didn't have to keep an eye on whether my place of living was safe or not every couple hours. All these fires you hear about, theres way more that happens and a much larger time frame that it all happens in. And years after black Saturday, driving through the areas it hit, ive never seen so much destruction, dead land where trees and wildlife once were.
@kemurinine42727 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you about that smell of ash. such a horrible smell, especially when you live in the heart of the city and can still smell the death taking place ages away. man fuck that day

I live in Victoria as well. I live in the northeastern part too. The smoke rolled into Mount Beauty and the temp got up to 48 degrees. I went swimming and did not want to get out of the pool. It was horrendous living in those hot conditions.

I was 12 during Black Saturday as well. I live in Lilydale and I remember massive amounts of people being evacuated to the football ground behind Lilydale train station. Worst part is they started planning a second evacuation deeper into Melbourne because they were fearing the unthinkable, that the fires would somehow come up through the valley and into Lilydale. Marysville, a town that I frequented as a kid and still do to this day was completely destroyed and it is so weird to think about how different the town is today compared to when I was a kid. Scariest thing is this season it looks like it might all happen again.

The Black Saturday fires happened just 1 or 2 weeks after i just moved to Victoria from Tasmania. The town i lived in didn't get hit by the fires, although you could see them just outside of the town border. Luckily the fires were dealt with quickly. It was really tough getting through the 40+ degrees celsius heat, in Tazzy it rarely got pass 25 degrees celsius during the summer where i lived.

There was also the Mt. Blanc road tunnel fire in 1999. It started when a semi truck carrying flour and margarine caught fire. It burned for over 50 hours and reached 1,000 degrees. 38 people were killed by cyanide filled smoke and incinerated. The driver was charged for stopping and not continuing to end of the tunnel were it could've been extinguished.

favorite facts about the chicago fire: even the river caught fire (that's part of how it spread so fast; it was able to cross water); it's why pretty much all buildings were made from brick or stone until cement and steel came along; it's still technically illegal for a household to not have a leather bucket just in case; and finally, it was actually kind of a mixed blessing because the city had been so poorly designed back then (with different levels as a result of the fact that the area is actually kinda swampy and the rapid growth) that the fire essentially allowed the slate to be wiped clean and put the grid system in place

the fire burned the city but it killed the plauge
@JoesAnimationHub7 жыл бұрын
I don't think the fire really killed off the plague, it was still around but research suggests that immunity was just starting in Europe, the disappearance of the black death wasn't mere coincidence in other parts of the continent during the events of the great fire, so a big fire wiping out the most deadly disease of it's time is kind of far fetched in hindsight. Also it is worthy to note the fire was only in London, while other cities like York, Sheffield or Glasgow to name a few were miles off from the fire and still had the disease here and there.

Seeing the damage first hand of the “Great Smokie Mountain Fire”, I have to say it was pretty bad for what it was and remaining as possibly being one of the worst in the area. Even though there was so much damage and many homes lost, in a matter of no time, the gorgeous city came back to life and was once again the most beautiful and annoying places to drive through. Once you deal with the traffic, the city thrives on even with a scar. On the brighter side, sprinklers are becoming mandatory for structures in the area.

I would say that this list is about right but not up to date. I have a BS in Forestry and Forest Fire and have 19 years of fire experience including developing the Incident Intelligence Section at the National Interagency Fire Center and as the first Fire Chief of the wildland fire section for the Territory of Guam. It has been an avocation of mine to research and study wildfires and wildfire history in the US. In the past decade I have watched the number and destructiveness of fires continue to ramp up. Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado have had the largest and most destructive wildfires in their histories. In 2013, the Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona killed 19 out of 20 firefighters on a Hot Shot Crew. The survivor lived because he was assigned as a lookout away from his crew. Hot shots are the best wildfire fighters in the US and this has never happened to a crew before. Based on scientific evidence, climate change has been responsible for this drastic increase in wildfire violence. For Trump to state this increase is because of poor forest management is criminal. I predict that wildfire damage and fatalities will continue to get much worse and new fires will be added to this list. We are now past the tipping point.
